    Memories of first live event

The very first WWF show I attended was at the Capital Centre in May of 1993. Small arena but a regular stop on the tour. I had been watching wrestling for almost a year and was a few weeks removed from the first PPV I saw live (WrestleMania IX). I was not quite 12 years old at the time. Before the show started, I got my dad to buy me a program (which was basically a smaller version of WWF magazine sold at the arenas that highlighted all the current storylines and rivalries...it also included the night's line-up). The first thing I noticed on the line-up was that the scheduled match between the Nasty Boys and the Headshrinkers had been changed to the Smoking Gunns vs. the Headshrinkers. This kinda pissed me off since I was looking forward to that match after the two had a concession stand brawl on Raw a few months prior. The Nastys weren't there due to their suspension which led to them jumping to WCW a month or two later. Here's the card as I remember it... The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Jim Powers - I wanted Powers to win cause he was cool looking. He didn't. I was temporarily sad, but then I remembered that I didn't come to the show to see this match anyway. Then I was happy. El Matador vs. Damien Demento - Demento was pretty cool due to the fact he would regularly have conversations with his hands ... and he was freaky looking. Same finish as Santana / HBK at WrestleMania VIII (as a young kid already well-versed in Coliseum Home Video PPV releases I asked myself "Couldn't Tito have learned to counter that move in the past year?") Bob Backlund vs. Blake Beverly - The crowd wasn't really behind Backlund - except for two old fat guys in the front row who seemed to have a love affair with Backlund dating back to his championship days of the late 70s. Opie Taylor picked up the win with some sort of roll up, perhaps into a bridge. Mr. Perfect vs. Shawn Michaels - The ad for this show in the Washington Post was built around this particular matchup that I was very much looking forward to. These two put on a great contest, one that to this day may be the best bout I've ever seen in person. Great psychology, Michaels played the perfect cowardly heel, and the crowd could not have been more behind Perfect. Eventually, the champ nails Perfect in the head with the IC title. Before the dazed referee can make the three count, the Gunns and Jim Powers rushed the ring and told the referee what happened. Rather than DQ the champ the referee orders for the match to continue, Perfect makes the Superman comeback ... kicks the tar out of HBK ... gets the 3-count, only for the referee to notice that Michaels' foot was on the bottom rope so the match AGAIN continues. Seconds later, Perfect catches Michaels sleeping and slaps on the Perfect Plex for the 1...2...*ding ding* Oh wow, we have a new champion, right? Nope, the 20-minute time limit had expired. Awesome match. I have pics of it on my website (check the sig at the bottom). Intermission ... Howard Finkel announces that the WWF will return to this area in late June with a show in Baltimore. The matches signed so far will pit Mr. Perfect against Lex Luger, a rare heel vs. heel match when Michaels puts up the IC title against Razor Ramon, and a rare face vs. face match when Bret Hart meets Bob Backlund. The next Cap Center show would be in July and would have the main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna (which got a huge pop). Hogan, of course, would be a no show after KOTR and would be replaced by Bret. The Smoking Gunns vs. the Headshrinkers - This was pretty cool since the Gunns had yet to make their TV debut. Up till this point, they had only been seen on vignettes shown on Raw and the syndies where they're hanging out at their ranch. Their music hits and BAM ... the Gunns come out shooting blanks. My dad thought it was pretty cool but it kinda scared the crap out of me. The Shrinkers use a lot of illegal double teaming, with Afa distracting the referee as often as possible. The Shrinkers eventually picked up the cheap win which would lead to a rematch 2 months later in this same arena - this time with Afa subbing for Fatu. Yokozuna vs. Jim Duggan - I wasn't a huge Duggan fan but I like America and I didn't like Yoko, so Duggan got my vote of support. Hacksaw goes for the running clothesline ... Fuji grabs the foot, preventing him from hitting it ... Duggan turns around to jaw with Fuji ... Yoko squashes Hacksaw in the corner and follows up with the Bonzai for the win. Kamala vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - This match was supposed to happen at WrestleMania but didn't for whatever reason. I'm going to assume that if it had, Mania IX would not be as highly regarded as it is today (*insert laugh track here*). Not much of a match. Kamala gains the advantage and tries pinning Bigelow with his stomach against the mat. The fans and referee tell Kamala to turn him over. He gets confused and tries to talk to the referee ... Bigelow rolls him up from behind for the pin. Bret Hart vs. Lex Luger - Bret was and is my favorite and I had high hopes that he would kick the tar out of Luger for knocking the Hitman out at the WrestleMania IX brunch a few weeks prior. And that's pretty much what happens. Earlier in the night, Luger came out for the match but was told that he would have to wear a protective armband or he would be fined and suspended by Jack Tunney. So the main event is saved for the main event instead of before intermission. Luger comes out with the armband, Bret kicks the crap out of him, uses the 5 Moves of Doom, goes for the Sharpshooter ... and who should run in but Razor Ramon. The two double team Bret and Razor holds the Hitman for Luger to use the running forearm ... Bret ducks ... Luger knocks Razor out cold. Bret sends Luger to the floor. This altercation and others like it around the tour would lead to a brief Razor vs. Luger run before Luger turned face on July 4. This was a matinee show so afterwards, my parents and I along with a crap load of other people stood outside the arena and watched as wrestlers took off in their cars. What I found odd is that HBK and Razor left together - even though they were scheduled to fight at the show in Baltimore the next month.

    WWF Coliseium Compilations...

You know what would save you a lot of hassle in the long-run when it comes to copy-protected tapes? Buy the masters. Seriously, try eBay for some WWF tape lots. You can sometimes find 10 or 20 tapes for auction as a single item, with the average price of a single tape being FAR cheaper than it would ever sell for individually. I'm talking in the $2-$4 range.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 7

I have mixed feelings about Season 6. Loved the Trio ... loved Evil Willow ... didn't care for Dawn's social issues ... can't stand to watch the whole Buffy / Spike relationship (disturbing much?). "And here's the scene where Spike nails Buffy from behind on the balcony at the Bronze...And here's the scene where Spike nails Buffy outside of the Doublemeat Palace...And here's the scene where Buffy treats Spike like shit..." Lovely. I gotta get me one of those relationships!

    Rey Mysterio DVD?

Flair and Shawn SHOULD get a 4 disc. I hear Bret's trying to produce his own DVD. Last I heard, positive talks were going on between he and the WWE about Bret gaining the rights to his footage in the WWF and WCW. I hope he gets the 10 disc treatment.

    Trivia

Rick Rude Kensuki Sasaki Bret Hart; Monday Night Raw building up to WrestleMania XII Triple H ... or Jean Paul Levesque as he was then known Bret Hart Randy Savage ... semi-finals of the U.S. title tournament 95 - Gene Okerlund / the Big Bossman following Bossman's actions during the Sting / Avalanche match ... Bossman tried tearing his shirt but it was giving him trouble so he said "shit", "fuck", something like that and Okerlund said "Hey, pal, you can't say that on TV! I'll have you sent out of here in a minute!", something to that effect. The 96 edition was Pillman / Heenan which most people are aware of already. Pillman was fighting Eddie ... rolled to the floor ... roughed up Heenan, to play up his "Loose Cannon" persona, and Heenan went off on him. Madusa Ric Flair and Carlos Colon A week or two prior, Marty Jannetty made his return after a 9 month hiatus and the altercation with Michaels during WWF Superstars saw HBK's manager, Sensational Sherri, smashed in the head with the giant mirror ... so he was without Sherri for the match and had to deal with the looming problem of Jannetty, who was very much pissed off

5, 6, and 8 are correct. Heenan / Pillman is correct but there is another ... Flair is correct but there is another. Although Drose did beat Triple H via DQ during the Free For All prior to the 96 Rumble, by "free TV" I meant one of the weekly shows.

    WWE Women's Division

Why don't we have a 30-minute classic between Trish Stratus and Victoria. Dragon suplexes ... powerbombs off the top rope ... Inziguris ... planchas to the floor, etc. And then the winner can spank the loser and tear her clothes off.

    Guilty Pleasures

I was always a fan of the Acolytes - as a team and individually. Weren't the most technically sound but when it came to the WWE, there were few guys that were more stiff in the ring (big ass former football players that are stiff in the ring = uber entertaining). And Jeff Jarrett. Jeff Jarrett rules the school.

    Kevin Nash Update

Oh god, I can see it now. Nash patronizes everyone via the microphone and only puts himself over. Nash: "It's Tommy Dreamer and Steven Richards - a main event in any city in the world! This is a match of the year candidate in the making! A lock up - OH MY - A HELLACIOUS HEADLOCK!!!! These boys are pulling out all the stops! Dreamer off the ropes ... OH MY! WHAT A MANEUVER! The cover ... 1 ... 2 ... 3! OH NO, HE KICKED OUT! HA HA! (I don't know...he goes into Vince McMahon mode)" Then after 30 seconds, he goes to the ring and lays both guys out before cutting a 15 minute promo about ... well, nothing. But the marks love every minute of it.

I had it for a weekend when I had my cable hooked up. Think instead of Nora Jones or Michelle Branch, it's all Styxx or Journey. Pretty entertaining as I remember.

    WWF Coliseium Compilations...

It's been years since I've made copies; I think most of the tapes I ended up getting masters of. As I remember, I had problems with Rumble 89 and Survivor Series 87. It could have just been that specific copy of the tape or maybe it was copy protected - not sure. Everything else I never had a problem with (and that's about 85% of all the CHVs).

Doug Furnas & Phil LaFon? 10. Earthquake
