Things that were supposed to happen but didn't
cawthon777 replied to MikeJordan23's topic in General Wrestling
I don't know the backstage reason but the on-screen reason was that the Nastys had just turned babyface and wanted revenge against Money Inc and Jimmy Hart for denying them a title match with the Natural Disasters. -
Things that were supposed to happen but didn't

Myth. I was about to say the same thing. I remembering reading somewhere (Observer maybe?) that the plan was always for Bret to leave that night with the title. There is debate to whether or not Lex would transition that night, but if memory serves me he was supposed to lose to Yoko and start feuding with Hennig (never winning the title at all). Here is the article in question, taken from the NY Daily News. GRAPPLERS ARE TATTLERS ABOUT WRESTLEMANIA Linda Stasi We always wondered why athletes get stripped of their jobs/titles/houses/freedom if they: bet on games/take steroids/fix sporting events, while wrestlers get rich from all of the above right in front of everyone. Well, in the spirit of shocking, big breaking news we have to tell all of you obsessive fans who'll be attending this afternoon's Wreslemania competition at the Garden that we already know who's gonna win. We know this because about 12 of the bulked-up boys have been in town all week and several of them can't keep their traps shut. A huge contingent of them - including Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Stan Lane, Johnny Polo and Crush - plopped down for a few 32-ounce porterhouse steaks at Charlton's steak house Thursday night and our source caught it all. Turns out perennial good guy Luger will meet and beat perennial bad guy Yokozuna for the World Wrestling Federation championship title. But, we understand, Luger will only own the belt for about an hour. At that time Hart is supposed to climb into the ring and, with the help of guest referee Mr. Perfect, lay a big beating on Luger and be declared champion. But don't let us stop you from getting drunk in front of your children and cheering for your favorite actor, er, wrestler. And after the show ... SWITCHEROO Linda Stasi Just the other day, we reported the outcome of Wrestlemania X several hours before the huge pay-per-view event unfolded before a live Madison Square Garden audience. We told you that Lex Luger would defeat Yokozuna before losing the championship belt to Bret Hart. Long story short, we were right. The only thing is, Vince McMahon was not about to stage that scenario after we found it out and reported it. To make matters worse, obsessed World Wrestling Federation fans were milling around the lobby of the Doral Court Hotel and congratulating Hart a full 10 hours before he actually won. Our sources say that McMahon called a last-minute meeting to pull the old switcheroo. He stuck with keeping Hart as champion, but he had him fight Yokozuna instead of Luger. To follow up, he had his publicist - former NBC entertainment flack Curt Block - fax us a note that read in part, "[your reporting] proves once again that nothing is as exciting of unpredictable as the WWF." Yes, especially when good reporting and reliable sources blow the lid off carefully staged entertainment and force people to get very creative on the fly. I don't agree with the implication in the first article that Bret would turn heel but everything else seems to hold up. -

According to Bret, that's true. -
Knobs was one of the handful of guys who was too injured to compete in 92.

I have yet to come across a Savage / Perfect match, let alone one that was televised. Savage / Taker had matches when Savage was subbing for Warrior in 91 but those didn't air.

I believe that match did air as part of the UK telecast but was cut from the US version due to time restraints. I have heard in the past from fans in England that Crush / Repo was cut from the UK version for the same reason. -

According to Bad News Brown (if that's worth anything), he was brought in by Vince McMahon to headline against Hogan at WrestleMania IV. -

LOD / Money Inc was never scheduled for WrestleMania. Money Inc weren't even regarded as a full time team until they won the straps and LOD were off the road completely between losing the belts and appearing at WrestleMania. Their tag match at Summer Slam was supposed to be for the belts. Maybe that's what you were thinking of? -
I believe he had a heated feud with Dr. Death Steve Williams in one of the smaller feds during that timeframe.

I would be shocked if Hogan vs. Flair wasn't planned for WrestleMania from Day 1 that Flair was with the company. That was the obvious money match. I think the plans officially changed right before the Royal Rumble, which would explain the Hogan / Sid confrontation after the match. So by the time Hogan was named on TV as the top contender, the plan was just to swerve the fans a week or two later and change the card as a result of the SNME tag match. From what I've read on RSPW, the Capital Centre in Landover, MD was a rumored site for Summer Slam. That was basically the default DC arena. They ended up doing a TV taping there just days after the PPV. -
To the best of my knowledge, he remained in the NWA, even trading the belt with Flair during a tour of New Zealand in 84.

... by turning heel, something he refused to do. The impression that I get is that, had that show not been held in England, Shawn Michaels would have been the one to dethrone Bret Hart of the IC belt on that date, not the Bulldog. Butch Reed was supposed to win the IC title from Ricky Steamboat. But he no showed and the Honkytonk Man was thrown in as a last-minute substitute after Hogan suggested it to Vince. The Legion of Doom were to meet the Natural Disasters in a title rematch at WrestleMania VIII. It was never announced on TV. As a matter of fact, that entire card was turned upside down. Aside from the obvious main event changes, Owen and Neidhart were supposed to be part of the 8-man tag at one point, IIRC. -
I just realized the other day that I can go through every edition of the Washington Post dating back to 1877 via my computer at home. ...The benefits of having a library card. While that in itself isn't too amazing (or for some people like myself, it kinda is), I now have full access to every wrestling card line-up, listing of results, and promo ad that ran in the Post all the way up to 1987. I just wanted to let you guys know that I've added a considerable amount of info from the National Arena, Washington Coliseum, and Capital Centre over the past 3 days, ranging between 1964 and 1987. In addition to the info, I've also posted well over 50 promo ads for cards held in the DC area. There are many, many more on the way. To see the progress made to the Cap Centre info, check out the Landover page featured on my site.

Owen and Dude Love had a number of "streetfights" in the weeks prior to Bad Blood. I'm sure that wasn't the only time the popcorn or any other unusual props were used.

Is it just me or does "fatal four way" imply that it's a one-fall match? Everyone does it, even the WWE. But instead of fatal four-way, isn't it just more appropriate to call it an elimination match?

You've proven yourself right on that one.

Republicans did not screw John Kerry. John Kerry screwed John Kerry. C'mon, it was only a matter of time before someone said it.

Because Clinton bent over backwards to appease foreign governments when instead they should have received a stern talking-to.

I see why. It's because we're bringing to light the fact Germany, France, and Russia provided Saddam with weapons in exchange for oil even after we went to war with Iraq. Way not to be corrupt. No one likes us because 1) they will never touch our GNP, 2) they will never touch our military, 3) they can't stand to be dependant on us, and 4) we're too drunk on freedom while their citizens shell out 50% of their paycheck to taxes. I love how foreign countries enjoy mentioning all the 'bad' we've done in the world while completely ignoring the good. Yeah, ok, so some civilians died during firefights in Iraq. Would you prefer a small percentage died that way or would you have thousands more die execution style and be dumped into a mass grave? Apparently you and the rest of the world choose the latter. Everyone is acting in their best interests. My best interest is not to follow Germany, France, and Russia. My best interest is to look out for America.

The Surviiiiiiiiiiiivor Seriiiiiiiiiiiiiies Thread

1.) Favorite world title match at the PPV? Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels, 92. Kudos to Vince for letting two breakout stars, who spent much of the year at midcard status, go out there for nearly a half hour and prove to the world why they should be considered two of the best in the world. 2.) Favorite SSeries team elimination match? Team WWF vs. Team Alliance (01) 3.) Favorite face / heel (or both) SSeries team assembled? Face - Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, Virgil, & Davey Boy Smith (91) Heel - Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, & the Rougeaus (89) 4.) Favorite non-world title, non-team battle match other than Austin / Hart? None really come to mind as being 'favorites' but I'll go with Triple H vs. Goldberg from last year simply because Triple H jobbed in the rematch, which few predicted would happen. 5.) Favorite segment? I have a lot but I'll stick with this one from the opening to the 1989 edition ... "I'm thankful for having the most ravishing body in the WWF." *kiss* - Rick Rude "I'm thankful that I'm not Ricky Rude." *kiss* - Roddy Piper 6.) Things you hated besides the Montreal Screwjob? Barry Windham not being able to work the 89 show The illogical call that made Ric Flair the sole survivor of his match in 91 -
The Undertaker and Steve Austin are probably Republicans also. I don't know about Eddie Guerrero. Don't Latino people love Bush up somethin' fierce? That mostly just applies to Ricky Martin and hispanics from Texas.

The first one I saw on pay-per-view was 93. I spent that whole day at school excited about going home that night and watching the show. I remember the announcers often throwing in reminders like "If you're going out of town for the holiday, call ahead and make sure you can order it where you're going." I miss the Thanksgiving association, whether it be the night before or the night of, but I understand why they stopped doing it. If you look at the pro wrestling industry from the 70s or 80s, territories - the WWF included - would often hold shows on holidays. Thanksgiving, New Years Day, sometimes even Christmas. While it makes for a memorable show, I'm sure the wrestlers would rather be home with their families than working the same match they've been working for six weeks straight.

1) To make Taker a main eventer with a world title reign to his credit as well as to boost the buyrate of Tuesday in Texas. They had to do something for people to watch 2 pay-per-views in a week. 2) I don't know but I doubt Bret would have been main eventing. The only reason he got the belt from Flair is because Vince didn't have any other logical options at the time. If Warrior had stayed around, Vince wouldn't have had to focus all his energies on making Bret a top star.

I was thinking that exact same thing. -
I've seen that and would agree that it's probably one of the best Yoko matches anyone will find. I think even Meltzer rated it somewhat high. Bret is the reason I went from a casual fan that would sometimes watch Superstars to a die-hard that would put down $220 for a floor seat at WrestleMania. I've said for years that my favorite match, based largely on nostalgia, is Bret vs. Davey Boy at Wembley. The buildup to that match solidified me as a fan, the match itself cemented it. I love his early singles matches against the likes of Steamboat, Dibiase, Savage, Martel, etc.
