How many times has a cage match NOT been the ME

    Kane vs. X-Pac; Armageddon 99

    Explain This To Me

It was a harsh crowd that didn't give the wrestlers an inch. Different crowds give different reactions. What you get in Toronto might not be what you get at MSG. What you get in Ohio is apparently snoring. It's not the wrestlers' fault if they go out there and bust their ass to put on a good match and get no reaction. Okay, let me put it to you like this. You go to a taping and there is a dark match with two guys you've never heard of. They bust their ass to put on a good show but the crowd shits on them because they've never been on TV. Is that the fault of the wrestlers too?

How many times has a cage match NOT been the ME

Agreed. Despite going on last, I refuse to believe a cage match with Missy and Paul E was the main event. IIRC, SuperBrawl VI was promoted as a double main event with Savage / Flair and Hogan / Giant.

    Benoit Must Be Stopped

For the record, this entire thread is rediculous. "Let's take the belt off Benoit because he's not getting God pops in Ohio. Let's completely forget about the fact that he makes EVERYONE that gets in the ring with him look like a million bucks. Let's forget about how he elevates each and every one of his challengers and makes them better wrestlers for having matches with him." IIRC, people were saying Benoit wasn't main event material and had no chance at the belt at WrestleMania due to the "lukewarm" pop he got by winning the Royal Rumble. Apparently Vince saw differently.

    Benoit Must Be Stopped

There's nothing wrong with Benoit's reign. He more than anyone is, at this point in time, a prime candidate for Wrestler of the Year. I don't think I need to run down his accomplishments since winning the Royal Rumble but the way the WWE has consistantly pushed him - despite not having the mic ability of the Rock - is a sign that they do have faith in him as a top guy. And, if his title defenses thus far are any indication, that faith is rightly deserved. Was Kurt Angle always the focal point of the show during his first run? No. Especially when you had Steve Austin vs. Triple H as the top feud at the time.

  12. Question. I'm trying to note what W/WWF/E matches have been named Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer since it began as a newsletter. Aside from Backlund / Patera in 80 and Patterson / Slaughter in 81, I'm not 100% sure of what other bouts were given the top spot. Maybe Savage / Steamboat, maybe Bret / Davey? I don't like assuming. Also, if anyone is aware of the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Matches of the Year from 2002 and 03, I'd appreciate it.

  16. Vince doesn't like ... or I should say didn't like ... face vs. face matches because it would force fans to choose a favorite and would split the merchandise profit. Instead of buying Savage AND Bret merchandise, you would only buy one or the other. It did happen on TV on SNME in 87. The match you have is from the May 94 Japan tour. Bret was champ, Savage played heel.

Wrestling Observer Matches of the Year

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. As a reader of PWI at the time, I never quite understood their love for the HBK / Jannetty Raw match that July. A few of those more recent picks has me even more confused.

    The Old School questions thread

The Andre thing was just days before he turned heel so no. I think he hadn't been on TV in a while so it was just meant to reintroduce him. I'm sure Kirschner was jobbed out to Reed quite a bit but they didn't "feud". Santana feuded with Reed (w/ Slick) for several months.

    Today's wwe news

History has proven that to not exactly be the case. Singles matches turn into tag team matches or 6-man tags. Stipluations such as ladder or cage matches are dropped with no explanation given. I've attended shows where that has happened. The "card subject to change" rule still applies.

They used to make a big deal about Bret working Superstars back in 93.

    Today's wwe news

As though that means anything. House show line ups can change at the drop of a hat. I'm not saying Benoit won't still be champion by then - just don't base the outcome of a PPV match solely on what a house show advertises.

    The Old School questions thread

Yoko injured Crush on Raw the day after Luger bodyslammed him on the Intrepid. Because Yoko was rather pissed at the time, he hit a number of Bonzai Drops after the match until Randy Savage - who was Crush's pal - came in the ring and Yoko and Fuji left. A few weeks later, Crush started calling into Raw to update everyone on his condition but when Savage said hi he would always hang up. Later on, we found out he blamed Savage for not coming to his aid sooner (he also blamed Savage for being in the IC title battle royal when Crush's name mysteriously wasn't entered). When Crush came back in October 93, they had the Savage - Crush summit in which Randy tried to apologize and tell Crush that hanging with Mr. Fuji wasn't the thing to do. They apparently made up just for Crush to drop Savage with a clothesline and then drop Savage throat-first across the retaining barrier. Savage accidentally bit down on his tongue as he hit the barrier which caused his mouth to bleed pretty badly. It looked good on TV though. Hennig turned heel on the Horsemen at Wargames that September, threatening to slam the cage door on Flair's head if the Horsemen didn't throw the match and give it to the nWo. Then, once they did throw the match, Hennig slammed the door on Flair's head anyway. It looked rather sick at the time. They met at Havoc with Hennig winning via DQ after the belt incident. Then they had a No DQ match at World War 3 which Hennig again won after hitting Flair with the title belt as he was locked in the figure-4. They were to have had a cage match at Starrcade but Flair pulled out a few weeks prior to the show ... forget why. Cause WCW wanted to send the fans home happy without having to put the belt on Piper. They had 2 non title matches - Starrcade 96 and Havoc 97 (the cage match). Their only PPV title match was SuperBrawl, in which Hogan won after Savage returned and turned heel to join the nWo. The fans might have been disappointed about not having a title match but it made the outcome of the match more in doubt. Had they all been title matches we all could have called the outcome weeks ahead of time - obviously Piper wasn't winning the belt.
