Most forgettable stint in a promotion

It should be said that the Shane Vs Barbarian match that I saw was from an MSG show and probably not shown on regular Prime Time Wrestling, he was probably just getting some ring work as they prepared to debut him on "regular TV" with the Rock Star gimmick and all. Shane worked against Haku at the Garden, and won, but never faced the Barbarian at MSG. Shane only worked the Brooklyn Brawler, Haku, Paul Roma, and Dino Bravo at MSG. I think he was injured before the MSG show he was scheduled to work in 95.

Most forgettable stint in a promotion

As a female wrestler, what more could she do in the company? Oh, she retired Madusa too (for about 2 years) ... though about 5 people remember that.

    The Super pre-SNME Thread

Disappointment? I'll have to wait until the show airs but as of right now - no. I know we all like to put our wrestling memories on a pedestal and build them up in our heads as the best thing ever. When it comes to the era of SNME, it really wasn't any better than what we have now. In fact, aside from the inclusion of Phil Collins' "Take Me Home" during the end credits, we're a lot better off now. Look at the first SNME. The Junkyard Dog, with his mom (it was Mothers Day) fought Pete Doherty to close the show. That's the equivalent of the Big Show facing Matt Striker in terms of star power. And do we need a history lesson as to how often the hillbillies appeared during those first few episodes? The kind of fans we are, we could sit down and dissect each and every installment of SNME and chalk up 80% of it as pure wrestlecrap. And yet that's the stuff that really helped get the company over in the 80s. It used to be that the card for Saturday Night's Main Event wasn't even announced until the week before the show. At least now they're giving it a few week's worth of buildup rather than closing Raw with a brief promo from Cena / HHH about their tag match the following week. I think with the fact they're actually promoting the full card a few weeks beforehand (a card that features no matches which, on paper, are obvious squashes) and the timeslot now is 3 hours earlier than it was in 1985 ... they're already off to a good start.

    Vince Russo Raw days

From his shoot, Russo said it was the 4/14/97 show, which Cornette had a lot to do with, with matches taped from Johannesburg, South Africa and Muncie, IN. I asked Meltzer about this a while ago, and he said it was the week after the Europe show because Vince McMahon felt he he had to shake things up after the WWF Title match got destroyed in the ratings. So that would be the 4/21/97 show with the Austin/Hart streetfight, which was the first Raw I saw all the way through. The Europe show was the 3/3/97 taped show from Berlin, Germany that featured WWF World Champ Sid vs. Mankind and the Davey Boy / Owen European title match. 3/10/97 was the first "Raw is War" telecast with the pyros, Marilyn Manson music, etc. If that was Russo's first show then it makes perfect sense.

I always thought that was funny. I took it as Gene pretending that members of the media were actually there shooting photos.

    SCW Results (3/4/06)

Southern Championship Wrestling March 4, 2006 Lenoir, NC Mulberry Rec Center 1) Dillon Eaton (Bobby Eaton’s son) pinned Brad Thomas at 6:43 with a swinging neckbreaker - Good match, quick pace. Both are young and small in stature but certainly know what they’re doing in the ring. The crowd was into it. 2) Mike Jackson pinned SCW US Jr. Heavyweight Champion the Ultimate Dragon to win the title with a swinging neckbreaker at 10:37 - Jackson was probably the oldest talent on the show and doesn’t have an impressive physique but his workrate was amazing. He wrestled as a cruiserweight and did an Undertaker rope walk around the entire length of the ring which made my jaw drop. Really impressive performance. As far as the finish, apparently the neckbreaker is a popular way to end things. - It’s announced that SCW will return to Lenoir May 6th with Jake Roberts vs. the Honkytonk Man headlining. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express and the Midnight Express are also signed to appear. - CEO Rob and SCW Women’s Champion Tracy Brooks come out, trash talk Jake and Honky, and plug an upcoming card in Myrtle Beach featuring America’s Most Wanted against the New Age Outlaws and Jeff Jarrett vs. the SCW Heavyweight Champion. 3) Krazy K pinned Dexter Poindexter at 12:47 with a slam out of the corner and putting both feet on the ropes for leverage - Perhaps the smartest worked comedy match I’ve ever seen. At one point K is knocked to the floor and Dexter checks around the various corners looking for him. K sneaks back in and charges but Dexter casually walks to the other corner to look for K on the floor and K smashes into the corner face-first. They did that spot twice and it really got over with the fans. 4) SCW Women’s Champion Tracy Brooks (w/ CEO Rob) pinned Amber O’Neal at 9:08 with a roll up after the challenger tried to get at Rob on the ring apron 5) Ricky Morton defeated Demolition Ax via disqualification at 5:47 when Ax struck the referee - Ax came out to his WWF theme music but I don’t think he did nearly enough to get the gimmick over. I was waiting for him to pummel Morton with both hands and then stick his tongue out at the fans in the Demolition style but it wasn’t to be. Poor match. The crowd was into it, as all Carolina audiences are when Morton is involved. 6) Rick Steiner pinned SCW Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine to win the title at 9:35 with a roll up as Valentine played to the fans - Steiner was super over with the crowd and really sold a leg injury after being locked in the figure-4 to the point where I didn’t think he would be winning the belt. - At this point, “The Crying Wrestling Fan” Dave Wills is introduced as the guest ring announcer for the final two bouts. 7) The Midnight Express (w/ CEO Rob) defeated the Powers of Pain (w/ the Fabulous Playboy) at 9:49 when Dennis Condrey pinned the Barbarian with a roll up after Barbarian accidentally hit himself in the head with a steel chair - So the boss is heel earlier in the show – and later in the show – but is babyface here? Okay. Match wasn’t bad but would have been stronger if the MX were still capable of going off the top. Late in the bout, one of the ringside photographers took a nasty bump as Rob – pretending to be Jim Cornette – chased Playboy around ringside with a tennis racquet. 8) Dusty Rhodes (w/ Elektra) defeated Jerry Lawler (w/ Renee) via disqualification at 11:22 when CEO Rob and the Midnight Express attacked Rhodes as Tracy Brooks held Elektra back from making the save - Rhodes was initially booed while Lawler, the novelty act, received the cheers. To fix that, Lawler cut a great in-ring promo on both Dusty and Ric Flair to turn the crowd against him. Rhodes and Lawler did everything they could to keep heat on the match while at the same time not hooking up. There were maybe 3-4 minutes of actual wrestling. After the match ended, Lawler was shoved off by Dennis Condrey. Lawler attempted to fight off the MX but was beaten down as well until Ricky Morton came out to clear the ring. Moments later, Lawler and Rhodes made up and Lawler said the next time he was in North Carolina he would be happy to team with Rhodes and Morton against the Midnight Express. Enjoyable show and worth the $15 price tag. I would say the venue was 75% full. And, as usual, the North Carolina crowd popped for everything.

    The Old School questions thread

A brief synopsis of the HHH / Taker rivalry: WWF @ Worcester, MA - Centrum - June 8, 1999 Raw The Rock defeated WWF World Champion the Undertaker and Triple H (w/ Chyna) by pinning Triple H with the Rock Bottom after interference from Chyna backfired - causing the Undertaker and Triple H to fight each other before the pinfall occured; after the bout, the two continued to brawl until the Corporate Ministry broke it up WWF @ Nashville, TN - Arena - June 20, 1999 (12,651; sell out) Sunday Night Heat - shown live - featured Jim Ross conducting an in-ring interview with Triple H & Chyna in which Chyna spoke about her participation in the King of the Ring tournament and Triple H explained why he gave Chyna his spot in the KOTR by explaining he wanted the WWF World Title instead; Triple H then made a challenge to whomever the WWF Champion would be after the KOTR, regardless of if it was the Undertaker or the Rock; included JR conducting an in-ring interview with WWF World Champion the Undertaker, with Paul Bearer, regarding his upcoming title defense against the Rock at the KOTR as well as the recent challenge from Triple H; upon being asked about Triple H, Taker put a choke on JR for trying to start trouble Chyna (w/ Triple H) pinned Billy Gunn at 1:46 after Triple H caused Gunn to fall over the top, as he attempted the Fameasser, then hit the Pedigree on the floor; after the bout, the Undertaker came out and brawled with Triple H until Viscera, Mideon, the Big Bossman, and the Acolytes came out to break the two men apart WWF @ Memphis, TN - Pyramid - June 21, 1999 (15,757; sell out) Raw WWF World Champion the Undertaker defeated Triple H (w/ Chyna) via disqualification when the Rock interfered and hit the Rock Bottom on the champion

    The Old School questions thread

WWF @ White Plains, NY - Westchester County Civic Center - November 29, 1993 (3,000) Monday Night Raw taping: 12/6/93 - included a closing segment in which Gorilla Monsoon came ringside, grabbed Bobby Heenan by the shirt, and threw him and his bags out of the arena; Heenan scrambled around to put all his belongings back in the bag before giving a tearful salute as the show faded to black (Heenan's last appearance for over 7 years) It was largely comedic until that last bit from Heenan. Heenan and Monsoon had intensified their on-screen rivalry in the weeks leading up to this.

How far back does WWE's Tape Library go?

The oldest title match I've seen footage of was the Bruno / Steele cage match from Phili. I think the year was 1970 or 69.
  20. Agreed. You're not going to break into the business and win matches right from the get-go. Everyone save Zeus, Mr. T, Lawrence Taylor, Jay Leno, Karl Malone, and Dennis Rodman were jobbers at some point. Hey, those guys clearly paid their dues... They each jobbed in their first match. Wasn't Hogan squashing guys in handicap matches shortly after his debut? And WCW picked Goldberg up off the street and turned him into an instant ME, he didn't do any jobs. Except for Piper 6 months before his "official" debut. I think Greg Valentine can be called a one time true main eventer that went on to be a jobber. As far as Hogan, I think you're just focusing on his WWF run. Here's a look at how he was doing prior to then (it's clear he was being protected due to his size): http://www.freewebs.com/hoganresults/19771983results.htm Goldberg did work dark matches prior to his TV debut. I'd be willing to bet his winning percentage wasn't 100% at that point.

  22. What matches which were taped but never saw the light of day would you have liked to have seen? WWF @ Louisville, KY - Louisville Gardens - October 28, 1992 Wrestling Challenge taping: Jeff Jarrett defeated Rick Martel (about a year before Jarrett was under contract) WWF @ Fresno, CA - Convention Center - January 26, 1993 Wrestling Challenge taping: WWF World Champion Bret Hart & Owen Hart defeated WWF Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase & IRS via disqualification WWF @ Edmonton, Alberta - Northlands Coliseum - July 7, 1997 (9,500; 7,108 paid) Raw taping: Bret Hart, WWF IC Champion Owen Hart, & WWF European Champion Davey Boy Smith defeated Steve Austin & the Legion of Doom
  23. I don't mean to give that impression if that's how it came across. Just wanted to set the record straight.
