*** Starrcade 1994 - Triple Threat 1. Big Van Vader (with Harley Race) pinned WCW U.S. Champion Jim Duggan to win the title in 13:00 after Duggan collided with Harley Race (holding Duggan's wooden 2 x 4), and Vader hit the Vader Bomb. It wasn't a Vader Bomb, it was the short-lived finisher the reverse powerbomb. The Vader Bomb was the splash out of the corner.

WCW working more than one show on the day of a PPV? I REALLY doubt the accuracy of that info.

I must have missed that. No harm done, the more people we can get on this the better.

Or maybe they realize that he's so good that Tomko might actually pick up a few things from working with him?

Should The Ultimate Warrior be inducted into...
cawthon777 replied to UseTheSledgehammerUh's topic in General Wrestling
As I said earlier, the HOF is based largely on loyalty. It's that backstage behavior and bullshit that's keeping him out of it and rightly so. Why reward a guy who left you and your company high and dry time after time after time? -

Much like the short-lived WCW Hall of Fame. I was watching Slamboree 95 yesterday (not for fun, to get some specifics for the WCW results site) and I found it interesting that Big John Studd found himself in both the WCW and WWE Hall of Fame. His son (the same one at WrestleMania) accepted on his behalf. This was two months after he passed away from cancer. -
I do make mistakes. If anyone can confirm one way or the other that would be appreciated.

The WWE Hall of Fame is purely political. It's based on loyalty more than anything else. I think it's great that the WWE goes to the trouble of honoring the legends and giving them the spotlight, but I don't think we'll be seeing the likes of Warrior anytime soon if ever. After all, this is a guy that was nothing before he walked in the door and was shot to superstardom in record time just to turn around and walk out on the company three times over the span of 5 years. Bruno and Bret deserve a spot in there before Warrior. Bret might get in eventually, Bruno - I doubt it. They'll offer but he won't accept. -

Actually, escaping over the top was very rare until the mid 80s.

The blue cage was around, IIRC, from 88 to 98.

I've been a fan of the Watts WCW era for years. Bringing in Muta and Liger for spot shows. Making WCW such a strong force in the NWA World Title Tournament in Japan (feat. Rude, Austin, Anderson, in addition to the Steiners in non tourney tag matches). The Steiners / Doc & Gordy rivalry. Steamboat / Rude. Giving house shows importance with the occasional title change or noteworthy event. Even the brief managing of Anderson & Eaton by Michael Hayes (there was potential there). I didn't mind the new rules, as hampering as they might have been to the workers, because it helped give add a legit-contest aura to the product which was great because it made it that much more distinctive from the WWF at the time. About the only problem I had was the slow jobbing out of the Dangerous Alliance. Rude was the only one who was able to avoid that. We could easily sit back and bitch about how Cactus was or wasn't used ... but if you think about it, he had been in WCW for less than a year when Watts came in and hadn't been used THAT well up to that point. Bringing Butch Reed into the equation, IMO, was a smart move from a booking perspective. Doom dominated the NWA / WCW for nearly a year as tag team champions and that memory was still fresh on the fans' minds.

WWF @ Tucson, AZ - Convention Center - May 28, 1991 WWF Superstars - 6/15/91: Earthquake & WWF Tag Team Champions the Nasty Boys defeated Tugboat & the Bushwhackers when Tugboat turned on his teammates, allowing Jerry Sags to pin Butch They never really broke up. I think Earthquake left in January 93 then Typhoon stuck around for a few months before doing the same. When Earthquake left again in the spring of 94 ("at the hands of Yoko and Crush"), Typhoon came back to attempt to gain revenge on Yoko. ...So basically he was monster heel fodder. Did some jobs to Diesel as well in 94.

IIRC, it had something to do with Eddie claiming Bischoff was blackballing him. It was probably killed because it actually got over with the fans and wasn't supposed to.
-
I don't think Cactus' face run "bombed". If anything, his push was cut prematurely in order to set Vader up for Flair at Starrcade, which left Cactus with no real direction. He played off the amnesia bit perfectly on TV, claiming he didn't expect anyone to fall for it however two men did - Harley Race and Big Van Vader. And when he made his surprise return at the August 93 Clash, that arena popped huge.

Dusty and Dustin met them at a bar and asked them to be their partners in Wargames. By that point, the Nastys weren't on TV too much (the tag team scene was hogged by Cactus / Sullivan, Roma / Orndorff, and Bagwell / Patriot at the time). They accepted and *bam* face turn.
-
Watts was already there. He came in a few weeks before Beach Blast 92. Cactus had to win against Zenk if they wanted ANYONE to pay money to see him face Sting at the PPV.

After looking through these old issues of Pro Wrestling Illustrated for results, I'm thinking the exact same thing. As I'm currently going to college in the Roanoke, VA area, I could be guarenteed a show at least once a month at the Civic Center during the JCP / WCW days. And while we did get a fantastic Angle / Brock 40-minute match here in September, it's not much compensation since the WWE came to Roanoke only twice in 2003.

Don't believe it happened in the WWF. I could see it taking place in the late 70s, early 80s in Canada, Georgia, or Mid Atlantic.
-
Yep, it took me years to realize that myself. *Rents tape as an 11 year old ... watches tape* "No Piper vs. Jake?!?! Nooooooo!" *shakes fist at sky*
-
Yep, it was called the Royal Rumble.
-
This issue has been bothering me for a while. A few years ago I was reading a column written by one of the hosts of the LAW. In it, the author made mention of a Royal Rumble taking place prior to 1988 and Hamilton, Ontario. For years, ever since I began collecting results, I had been looking for more info regarding this. I heard stories about JYD winning one in St. Louis and Terry Funk being involved in one in Chicago. I e-mailed Dave Meltzer about it several minutes ago. He confirmed that JYD did win the St. Louis version and didn't indicate that there were any others. Using deductive reasoning, I'm guessing that this card took place at the tail end of 1986 or sometime in 1987 ... my St. Louis info from that time is lacking. So ... I was wondering if anyone out there could help me place a date on this historic event. ... It's times like these where I wish I had some Observers from the 80s ...
