    More Survivor Series 97

I didn't yet have the Internet at the time of the Montreal Incident so the entire thing took me by surprise. Instead of Bret FINALLY getting the last laugh on Shawn and DX, I tune in to Nitro (which aired at 4pm in Alaska; Raw aired at 8pm) to see the nWo with Canadian flags and Mean Gene talking about Bret hitting a "WWF official" backstage the night before. Then on Raw, the WWF is on the defense - making it to sound like Bret was some sort of asshole primadonna. When I finally did get the Net two months later, I read up on everything I could - mostly relying on Slam! Wrestling. Check out some of their archived interviews (assuming they're still up) with Davey Boy (early 98), Bret (late November 97), and Owen (Feb 98) following Montreal. There is some kayfabe in there but it's pretty informative if you want their opinions on the matter. Davey does mention the contract situation.

    WWF 97-98

Undertaker was Ahmed's partner and was pinned after receiving the Pearl River Plunge. The announcers made it out to sound like Ahmed didn't turn heel for the hell of it - he did so to wake Taker up (Taker was giving into Paul Bearer's demands on a weekly basis at this point so that Paul wouldn't tell the people about Kane). So Ahmed wasn't really a heel ... but he was with the Nation and was acting heel ... then he was supposed to get the title shot - which would have resolved all this, I'm assuming - but was injured and replaced by Vader.

What is Michaels doing for Mania?

RVD vs. Shawn during Shawn's brief title run in 02 was pretty decent but I don't know how the same match would come across now. Shawn vs. Flair might be doable if they go with the Foley / Rock vs. Orton / Batista tag match.

    Malenko at WMXX?

Why is it being called a battle royal at all if pinfalls count? Just call it an elimination match. One of WCW's last solid matches was the cruiserweight elimination match from SuperBrawl Revenge, which Shane Helms won. Hopefully the WWE can put on something similar if not better.

    A few WWF 1993 questions

I'm betting that came from RSPW. Tenryu did work a few matches at the January TV tapings immediately following the Royal Rumble but that was it. I guess maybe there were plans that fell through. And Lawler was a nobody in the WWF at that point in time. Not being familiar with USWA back then, I saw him as simply a color guy until the feud with Bret - even then, I thought Bret would destroy him within 5 minutes.

  16. If Benoit is going to go out there and break Backlund's record, throwing out a few guys here and there, a slightly tainted victory ain't gonna take anything away from him. What's the point of this thread? IWC paranoia? The fact that 50% of fans polled think Benoit will win ISN'T a bad thing. It shows that he's finally getting over to a main eventer. At this point, it wouldn't make sense for anyone but Benoit to win, IMO.

    WCW Beach Blast 1993

At the June 93 Clash of the Champions, they were supposed to face each other since Payne stole the Badd Blaster. Then during an interview segment, Payne invites Johnny out to apologize ... then shoots it in his face. I know they fought again at the August Clash of the Champions but I'm not sure if that's when Johnny took his mask off. Actually, now that I think about it, wasn't that match a mask vs. guitar bout? Then Johnny won, to keep his mask ... then a week or so later he takes it off voluntarily (love the booking on that one).

  20. Recently came across this on the MSG website. As I'm going to Mania in two months, it irriated me a bit. Are Cameras/Recording Devices Permitted? Video Cameras, digital cameras and cameras with telescopic or zoom lenses are not permitted inside Madison Square Garden at any time. This policy will be strictly enforced. For Knicks, Rangers and Liberty games only, you may bring in a disposable or personal camera. ...So therefore they aren't allowed at all for Mania? For those of you who have been to MSG, any idea as to how well this is enforced? I'm planning on bringing a digital and will cram it up my ass if need be to get inside the arena (praying that won't be the case).

So who's ordering the Royal Rumble?

I'm ordering it. I've always been a mark for the Rumble and this one has a special significance since I'm attending WrestleMania for the first time in March. I want to see Benoit dominate the entire WWE roster. I'm very much straight but that alone, after so many years of anticipation, might just give me a hard on. As far as the Rumble match, the finish occured to me just last night while watching Raw. As we all know, the #30 participant is notorious for his lackluster performance. Goldberg will be no exception, though he will come close to winning it all. Brock, after demolishing Holly earlier in the bout, sees that Benoit is on the verge of winning the Rumble and earning a rematch with him at Mania. Lesnar comes ringside and inadvertantly causes Goldberg's elimination, winning Benoit the match. Thus we get Brock vs. Goldberg at Mania with Benoit earning his title shot. Some may argue that it would be a tainted win and wouldn't mean as much. I would say that if Benoit can last over 60 minutes, breaking even Backlund's record, can throw out a few guys here and there, and still be the last man standing at the end of it all - it would take more than a somewhat controversial finish to rob Benoit of his glory.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a copy of the first few Shotgun episodes from 97 (the nightclub versions)? As you can see from the 1/18/97 edition, my info is super basic.

You and me both. Flair and Perfect had been built up huge at that point - Flair twice holding the world title and Perfect just recently returning to action. IMO, they hot-shoted the blowoff but it still made for a memorable match.
