Backlund/Inoki, Hogan/Flair @ MSG, Taker defends

Who's Chris Walker? The name vaguely rings a bell, but I can't remember him ever in the WWF. Why was he getting a win over a semi-name like Hercules? Walker was a very ripped guy of average height, IIRC. The WWF was on the verge of pushing him pretty big when the steroid scandal made headlines in 1992. Instead, he was let go in early 92 - I can only assume because of the roid issue. -

Obtained this little bit of info from a contributer to my website. It's from last night's show in Tacoma. Match 2 -- Mark Henry vs Tommy Dreamer Dreamer came out with a 'guest manager' who held his cane, and I guess rooted him on. Theodore Long's promo was totally bland. I gave Mark the Nation of Domination sign but he didnt look at me. Dreamer went to the knees early. Henry went on the attack with his usual boring stuff. Dreamer kicked out of his front slam that he wins a lot with. He won with a splash, even though Dreamer kicked out, Charles Robinson said ring the bell anyways. Dreamer kicks out of the powerslam ... then kicks out of a splash ... wtf?

The Bret midget, Hogan/Piper duo, Foreign Fanatics
cawthon777 replied to cawthon777's topic in The WWE Folder
Yeah, I remember the 9/11/95 Raw that had been hyped for weeks (Raw took 2 weeks off after Summer Slam). So I turn on Nitro to watch Hogan vs. Luger and Bischoff gives away the entire Raw show ... not that I really cared since I was going to watch the show anyway, but it was shocking. Bischoff did it almost weekly for several months - at least when Nitro went head-to-head with a taped Raw (which was 3 weeks a month). "Jake Roberts beats the dentist. ...Wait, Jake Roberts? Is he still wrestling?" -

Was there a midget parody thing before that? I'm leaning towards a no. -
Steel Cage Turmoil, Chuck Norris, Rude's Brood
cawthon777 replied to cawthon777's topic in The WWE Folder
Yep. It doesn't really have a name, it was just a house show with a gauntlet-style cage tournament. I gave it the steel cage turmoil name based on the tag team matches. There are a few tape trading sites out there that have handheld footage of the show, though I've yet to see it for myself. -

WWF @ Landover, MD - Capital Centre - September 2, 1992 Wrestling Challenge taping: The Undertaker defeated WWF World Champion Ric Flair via disqualification after Mr. Perfect hit the challenger with a chair; after the match, the Undertaker hit the tombstone on Flair That's the match. It took place 1 day after Flair regained the title and was included on CHV's Wrestling's Grudge Matches (93) and an Undertaker tape from the same year (not the crappy 1-hour "He Buries Them Alive..." or the other one from 94 where he faces Crush, Bam Bam, etc). As far as the MSG commentary, I wouldn't attribute it to a bad microphone. Maybe when the Flair match initially aired, it started at the point where Vince began the commentary. Just an idea. Although I'm sure they taped the entire show when at MSG, I know of at least once case where a top match was never televised - Backlund / Race in a rare WWF vs. NWA title match in September 1980. When that card was shown on the MSG Network, they replaced the match with the Hogan / Andre bout from Shea Stadium which took place the month prior. So of course, if they still have Backlund / Race in the vault somewhere, I assume that match would have no commentary at all.

Since many people thought Russo had something to do with the Montreal Screwjob, he turned it into a storyline and gave Bret the win at Starrcade in similar fashion ... as payback, I guess you could say and to show that "the Powers that Be" (they were still working that angle at the time) supported Bret. Then the next day on Nitro, I think I heard the word "Montreal" about 100 times. Bret doesn't want to win like that, rematch, nWo silver is born, etc.

Ultimate Match of Survival, Arsenio, Hogan/Perfect
cawthon777 replied to cawthon777's topic in The WWE Folder
Sammartino's match is often thought of as a precurser to the Montreal Incident. He was being pushed to the stars and then lost via submission to a JTTS. Not sure why it was done - his ego was getting too big, a shot at Bruno, who knows? I actually used to have a tape of the Arsenio match. It was pretty hokie. The Nastys made a big deal about winning the titles once in LA (WrestleMania VII) and so of course they thought they would regain them from the LOD in the same city. Jake the Snake carried the entire segment ... and he was doing commentary. -
So what does WCW do when Bigelow comes back? He jobs to Goldberg to ME a Nitro. Very little buildup, no mention of Bigelow's heroic efforts.
-
No particular reason other than to generate more heat for the match.

Because Tag Champs vs Top Tier Upper Card Heels = $$$$$ Pretty much. They did have a blow off around this time though ... on Sunday Night Slam (televised maybe a week before KOTR?). Right after the KOTR is when Jacques and Pierre did the angle in Montreal where Pierre and Johnny Polo double teamed Jacques - which led to the retirement match in October. WWF @ Montreal, Quebec - Forum - June 25, 1994 WWF Tag Team Champions the Headshrinkers defeated the Quebecars when Jacques was rolled up from behind; the challengers played the babyfaces while the champions played the heels; after the match Johnny Polo and Pierre attacked Jacques Jacques Rougeau Retirement Show - Montreal, Quebec - Montreal Forum - October 21, 1994 Jacques Rougeau pinned Pierre Oulette with a flying bodypress; Rougeau used Queen's "We are the Champions" as his theme song for the night

Mine worked fine. It had his complete promo, including the challenge to Sting. Picked it up at FYE (Best Buy had nothing). I've gone through most of the non-matches (I've already seen the vast majority and, being sick, I don't have the attention span for a 45-minute match). Flair's intro at Starrcade 83 was pimpin...or laughable if you want to compare it to what we would get today. Dusty Rhodes rules the microphone. I was a little upset they didn't include Sting's knee injury from the Clash where he was kicked out of the Horsemen but it's a minor problem. I gotta say...for my money, it doesn't get better than Flair when it comes to tying me into a match / promo. In the handful of segments when he starts tearing up (and maybe it's just my Robitussin acting up), I'm pretty much right there with him. Two questions though - for the PWI Wrestler of the Decade segment, was that at Starrcade 89 and just cut out of the home video? And finally, can anyone name the guys that fill up the ring after Flair's win over Race (aside from the obvious Ricky Steamboat and Angelo Mosca?). I think Whipper Billy Watson is there but not sure about the rest.

Aren't lumberjack matches no DQ? No. Actually most of them end on a DQ because a lumberjack interferes. - HBK / Duggan from Raw for instance. -

1992 in either fed can do no wrong with me. I started watching the WWF that year, WCW in 93, so I dig all the quality (Bret, HBK, all the PPVs) and crap (Mountie, Papa Shango) that Vince had to offer. Thanks to video tapes, I really got into Bill Watts' run in WCW. It brought a lot more credibility to the industry in that it presented the wrestlers as legit athletes. Some of the added rules may have been lame but in terms of straight up old school wrestling I don't think you could do better with guys like Austin, Steamboat, Dr. Death, Gordy, Windham, Vader, Pillman, Simmons, Sting, Rude, etc. Even Muta and Liger did a little TV during that time.

The KOTR took place 10 days after Summer Slam ... so probably not.
