HOLY SHIT!!! 8 seconds!!, I thought I was doing well to get under 10 seconds. Dont worry mate, sometimes i play for hours after work when i'm bored, try using the two mushrooms on any lap besides 1, use them on both straights (obviously) and make sure you hit the corners absolutely dead on using L and R, it takes a while.
