    DS Lite - The Thread

Just swung by my local EB, they have some sort of trade-in offer for it, but it's only for 50 bucks, which is a joke. I may end up keeping my current DS after all (I was expecting at least $75). EDIT: I guess I should mention, this was $50 CDN, and a new DS is $150 here.

Yeah, I mean, if this does turn out to be true, their game sales are going to plummet. People aren't going to take risks buying games because they can't recoup their losses anymore.

I don't know how reliable this news is, since it comes from Games Radar, but pretty interesting none-the-less. It says that Sony has been telling retailers that there will be NO pre-owned PS3 software available, as it will be ILLEGAL to sell a game you have purchased, because according to Sony, you've only bought a license to play the game and don't actually own it. Is Sony trying to kill their brand here, or what? http://www.gamesradar.com/gb/ps3/game/news...&sectionId=1006

Super Mario Bros. for the DS

Don't know if this is something that was in the remake of Super Mario 64 for the DS, but when you close the lid and put your DS into sleep mode while playing NSMB, Mario says "Bye bye!" and "It's a' me, Mario!" when you open it back up. Pretty cool little easter egg.

Here's another cool little find, it's Miyamoto ejecting a disc from the Wii. I've always known how small it was reported to be, but it's still weird to see it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYNZ90kB2wk&eurl=

Yes, this has always been the big problem I've had with both companies. The interesting thing I've encountered, though, is that no one is actually loyal to Microsoft or Sony per se...they're loyal to the franchises they've managed to acquire. Nintendo and Sega are companies that fans ARE truly loyal to and actually respect.

http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707908p1.html The hands-on reports on for Red Steel at IGN are really disappointing. Apparently, they basically took the controller and made it like a big analog stick instead of giving it the pin-point light gun like control, which makes absolutely no sense. Same thing with the sword play, you're stuck doing basic motions which the game takes and does generic animation for (basically like pressing "vertical attack, horizontal attack" but in the air). I can't believe they're screwing it up so completely when it should be a no-brainer, considering that Wii Sports Baseball, that little simple game, can accurately mimic all of your motions on the bat and freaking DUCK HUNT can get shooting accurately. I sincerely hope they can overhaul this game in time for launch and make it good, because right now it sounds like the guys at Ubisoft, who I consider very talented, are making idiotic mistakes. This is not the kind of game that they should have out to show people how the controller will work, because it sounds like it makes the controller look crappy and ineffectual.

He's right, it is too cheap. Sony will be losing crazy amounts of cash on each unit developed, the production cost will be way higher than the selling price. Those blu-ray players ain't cheap. Same thing went for the PS1 and PS2. Microsoft took a fucking wash on the original X-Box, same for the Oh, I know that's the truth, but that's not the consumers problem, it's Sony's. It's nothing but a slippery slope if it's accepted, however, and it has to stop now. Right now they're saying "$600 dollars for all this stuff you get is a great deal!", next time it will be "You know, $800 bucks for all this stuff you get is a fantastic bargain!", and so on and so on. The PS3 with Blu-ray is nothing but a trojan horse, to get Blu-ray as the dominant format. What happens if Blu-ray does die out? Then it will cost even more for those games to continue to be manufactured on Blu-ray discs, and the benefit of having a Blu-ray player is moot. Look at the UMD fiasco. Sony needs to learn a lesson, apparently the hard way. So be it.

According to Ken Kutaragi, the PS3 is too cheap at $600 dollars. http://ps3.ign.com/articles/706/706133p1.html Also, Super Mario Galaxy footage (grainy quality, there are better versions floating around) but still very, very nice.

Yes, I can't wait to read reports and see some high resolution screenshots of all this sweet, sweet madness. Mario looked...incredible. I need that game. Excite Truck has deformable terrain as well, that seems like a cool feature no one picked up on. Edit: Just looked at some Red Steel screenshots on IGN, the graphics aren't blowing me away but it looks good. It seems the biggest hinderance right now is texture quality.

I was hoping they would show how the virtual console will look in terms of interface, and where is the next big secret? Was it that the system is always able to receive data and work even when it is in standby mode? The speaker in the controller is a really clever idea, should add to the immersion and help give a point of reference in 3D space.

The MGS4 trailer was really cool, they actually made Raiden -- RAIDEN-- seem like a pretty compelling character. It was the one thing that made me consider getting a PS3, even after the price announcment and everything else. But $600 bucks to play MGS4 and FFXIII (let's face it, Heavenly Sword is basically God of War on steroids, with a female lead) isn't going to fly. I avoided the Xbox all last generation because it had no real interesting software that made me want to pay the money, and I guess this generation it will be the PS3 in that situation.

At the very least, the awkward silence in the audience throughout the conference, especially after the controller reveal and the price-point reveal, provided entertainment. And I didn't have to drop 600 bones to get it. Sony IS leading the way for entertainment after all!

Strangely enough, gametrailers.com has almost all of the games shown at the Sony conference in individual trailers except for Tekken 6...not really sure why.

I think you still get wireless controllers with it, but just not wireless internet. However, I don't think the PS3 controller has rumble in it anymore (probably due to battery life and it might mess up the tilt sensors, I'm not really sure).

It's one thing to be smug or proud of actual innovation. It's another to be proud about taking the basic idea of that innovation, and half-assing it. Anyone who says that "This tech has been around for awhile!" or "Nintendo stole it first from so-and-so!", save it. It's the idea of applying it as a standard for videogame control for an entire console that is what makes it the way it is.

No problem, wasn't trying to pick on you or anything, just thought it would be a good idea to explain how the chart worked since it took me a bit of time to understand how they formatted it as well. Sony WAS good for gaming, they provided a solid alternative. They aren't anymore, they're too far up their own asses. Did you see Kutaragi's expression and posture when he unveiled that "incredibly innovative" controller? I was just praying some brave journalist (or Reggie) would leap onto the stage and tackle him.

I am 100% certain I am reading it correctly. If you look on the line where it says MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash you will see a little white circle on the 60gig side of the divider. Everything that is standard has a circle in the middle with no divider.

Time will tell, but I sincerely doubt Sony will be "dominating" anything this time around. Didn't Sony fans say that the PSP was going to dominate the DS? I don't see that happening.

    E3 2006: The Thread

PS3 uses memory sticks like PSP, not memory cards like PS1/PS2. Actually, that's what I meant. If you look on that spreadsheet, it says "Memorystick/SD/CompactFlash", and that will only be available on the $600 model. So the only way to save anything on the $500 model is the harddrive, I guess. The Wii has slots for those formats. At an estimated $200-250 dollars.

The hits keep on coming. The 20 gig, $500 dollar model won't feature HDMI OUT, Wi-fi, or even a memory card slot. http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509ae.pdf

I know it can never even come close to the same, the only things I can see that being useful for is vehicular control (racing, the warhawk game they showed which really wasn't following his motions that well.) I'm just completely outraged they would even attempt it. It's the principle of the thing.
