Wide left. This will be interesting considering that figure the offenses may have to rely on field goals in the overtime. Safe to say Penn State won't be jumping the Rose Bowl loser even if they win here.

The '79 Rams were probably the worst team ever to make it to the Super Bowl although they came within in a quarter of pulling off the greatest upset ever as they led the Steelers 19-17 after three. One thing about the '88 49ers is they were a completely different team the second half of the year and the postseason as Montana was in and out of the line-up and Steve Young wasn't the quarterback he'd become at that point (although did have that incredible game winning run against the Vikings). After a humiliating loss to the Cardinals to fall to 6-5 they won their next four games 128-51. They lost their regular season finale against the Rams 38-16 but they pulled all their regulars for that game as they couldn't improve their playoff spot. Then they got revenge on the Vikings 34-9 after being upset the previous year when they had a better team and then had one of the best performances I've ever seen when they crushed the Bears in Soldier Field 28-3. Their late season performance and playoff wins were impressive enough where they were actually heavy favorites over the Bengals even though Cincinnati was the best team in the NFL for most of the year.

1988 had to be one of the weakest quarterback classes ever as not only was there none selected until the 3rd round, there were none taken in the 4th & 5th rounds. Here's all the qb's drafted that year: 3rd Round 68. Tom Tupa, Ohio State (Cardinals) 76. Chris Chandler, Washington (Colts) 6th Round 149. Don McPherson, Syracuse (Eagles) 151. Scott Secules, Virginia (Cowboys) 159. Stan Humphries, NE Louisiana (Redskins) 7th Round 175. Mike Perez, San Jose State (Giants) 180. Kerwin Bell, Florida (Dolphins) 10th Round 256. Bud Keyes, Wisconsin (Packers) 274. Todd Santos, San Diego State (Saints) 11th Round 281. Danny McCoin, Cincinnati (Lions) 282. Danny McManus, Florida State (Chiefs) 283. David Weber, Carroll College (Raiders) 12th Round 328. Steve Slayden, Duke (Browns) So only two quarterbacks in Chandler and Humphries that had success in the NFL. Danny McManus had success in the CFL and is still limping around there. Tupa actually would be 3rd in NFL passing attempts of that list as he was the Cardinals regular starter in 1991 and didn't convert to punter until 1994 with the Browns (he played both positions at Ohio State). Guess who was one of Tupa's back up in 1991? Chris Chandler.

I found this photo of Vermeil a little while back from 1975. He's always been crying. I think he cries after he finishes a box of cereal. Oh the memories of Count Chocula.

Hey did you know A.J. Hawk's girlfriend is Brady Quinn's sister? Just thought you guys would want to know in case you didn't already...

Okay seriously they couldn't just play the original song instead of one sung by Paul Rodgers? Oh boy I'm gonna go and get the extended highlights! God networks just really have no clue about bringing in marginal fans to sporting events.

The referees telling essentially ABC to keep the overhead camera off the field in the middle of the game and Musburger and Danielson going completely slient just made me giggle.

Okay so to answer my own question this is the first time ever that the preaseason AP #1 and #2 have been the same going into the bowls in back-to-back years. Before 2004 the last time #1 and #2 were still the Top 2 was 1970 with Ohio State and Texas although they flipped spots during the season. The last time they were the exact same was 1951 with Tennessee and Michigan State. So I'd say it is safe to say whoever is preseason #1 and #2 next year that one of them will not be there at the end of the season.
-
I'll post the standings when today's games are done but the contest is down to Will Scarlet and teke184 and will be decided by the Rose Bowl. Will Scarlet picked USC and teke184 picked Texas.
-
Hey first double post ever, I think.
-
I think I'll do some research on preseason rankings vs. pre-bowl rankings but here is 2005 Preseason AP Top 25 and where they finished in parenthesis (using it since there is obviously no preseason BCS). One thing that is definently out of the ordinary was now back-to-back years the preseason #1 and #2 were the same going into the bowls. 1. USC (1) 2. Texas (2) 3. Tennessee (NR) 4. Michigan (20) 5. LSU (10) 6. Ohio State (4) 7. Oklahoma (26) 8. Virginia Tech (12) 9. Miami (9) 10. Florida (16) 11. Iowa (25) 12. Louisville (15) 13. Georgia (8) 14. Florida State (22) 15. Purdue (NR) 16. Auburn (7) 17. Texas A&M (NR) 18. Boise State (28) 19. California (31) 20. Arizona State (NR) 21. Texas Tech (18) 22. Boston College (19) 23. Pittsburgh (NR) 24. Fresno State (29) 25. Virginia (NR) Not in preseason Top 25: #3 Penn State, #5 Notre Dame, #6 Oregon, #11 West Virginia, #13 Alabama, #14 TCU, #17 UCLA, #21 Wisconsin, #23 Clemson, #24 Georgia Tech

Outback Bowl is nice example of why it'd be nice in some fantasy world that bowl assignments were based on merit and not pre-determined conference alingments and how well you draw. Iowa didn't even finish in the BCS Top 25 yet they get to play in a "January 1st" game simply because they drew well in the Outback Bowl two years ago. Granted playing on "January 1st" is a bit overrated as this year the Peach Bowl had the best non-BCS match-up (on paper at least) and the Holiday Bowl getting a Top 10 team pretty much every year now but Iowa had no business getting a big payout game like this and it's showing.
-
It's just going to be bizarre with them doing those major games when they won't be televising any regular season games. I'm really dreading their who they pick to be their pbp guys. They have one of their many awful basball pbp guys do the Cotton Bowl every year. They should sign Dick Vermeil to be an analyst who I at least think was good as he was doing college football games before he returned to the NFL. That was now over 10 years ago and I think around that time I still thought Tim McCarver actually knew what he was talking about.

To keep the TWiCFB thread from falling apart I've decided this game will need it's own thread so here we are. Looks like the Emerald Bowl isn't going to end by time they kickoff in San Diego.

Funny enough the first game decided is the Bored Bowl. With TCU's win AlwaysPissedOff's Alabama Crimson Tide has defeated Spaceman Spiff's Miami Hurricanes and won the Bored College Football Pick 'Em Championship and will receive $50 in cash. APO closed out the year on an 11 game winning streak.
