This Week in College Football 11/1 - 11/5

This article is a couple of weeks old but apparantly the ACC is now souring on the Gator Bowl: http://www.savannahnow.com/stories/102605/3388985.shtml This probably has to do with the ACC playing it's title game in Jacksonville and not wanting to have a school play back-to-back games in the same location, which is a likley scenerio with Florida State this year.

On that subject because Notre Dame is now almost a lock for the Fiesta Bowl, the Gator Bowl now gets left with possibly South Florida. Rutgers isn't a draw and Louisville lost to USF. They should probably look elsewhere for a conference to take it's 2nd place team from with the current state of the Big East after this year. I'd like them to grab the Pac-10 but geographically wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. It just annoys me that the Pac-10 doesn't have it's 2nd place team go to a major bowl, unless it gets a BCS at-large bid.

    NFL Week Nine

Not that I give a shit about the Raiders but I can't believe they didn't dispute the clock as there were clearly two seconds left when Johnson scored so they could at least have a chance at returning the kick off. Kerry Collins was on the field for the extra point because so many Raiders went to the locker room. Quitters.

Incidently enough Notre Dame and Penn State play each other the next two years.

    USC vs Texas

To this point Alabama has played a weaker schedule than both USC and Texas. Their only win over a current Top 25 BCS team is Florida and their non-conference schedule included two Sun Belt teams. Now if they beat LSU, Auburn, and win the SEC title game then there would be an argument. At this point it is a "What If?" scenerio with Alabama as the argument for them over USC or Texas is very weak at the moment.

Fun Fact: Sun Belt doesn't have a non-conference win over a I-A team this year. Only Louisiana-Lafayette came close losing 24-21 to Central Florida.

It doesn't matter if they finish with a losing record, if you win your conference you get an automatic bid to a bowl game. North Texas did in 2001 with their 5-6 record.

For something completely different, the Sun Belt conference champ could very likely end up with a losing overall record which would be the second time it's happened (North Texas, 2001). Arkansas State was the only team in the conference with a winning record coming into today but proceeded to get murdered by Middle Tennessee State 45-7. Louisiana-Monroe now controls it's own destiny to win the conference but has to run the table to finish with a winning record as they are 3-5 at the moment. North Texas, the defending six-time conference champ, is only 2-6 overall but still could win the conference. Come on NCAA please Old Yeller this entire conference already.

Who destroyed Arizona State, who blew out Northwestern and probably should have beaten LSU. When you try to play the "this team who lost to this team, who beat this team" game it just makes your head hurt.

You have to finish with at least seven wins to be bowl eligible, so most everyone still has a shot. This would be a good time for a reminder of the bowl alignments. APO won but did it by tying for the lowest point total of a winning team this week thus they tumble in the rankings due everyone in the Top 10, who wasn't playing another Top 10 team, winning this week. So we have a new #1, who's an old #1. It is an incredibly tight race for the Bored Bowl. I'd say everyone in the Top 10 still has a shot. 1. Georgia Tech - iggymcfly 2.15 2. Yes we have two months before the game is played, although I'm strongly considering just creating a USC vs. Texas debate thread now since that's what these threads are going to turn into the rest of the year.

Looks like Miami will save the BCS this year. Barring a major upset, or miracle comeback by Virginia Tech, the Rose Bowl is pretty much set. Even if Alabama manages to go undefeated, which is no lock, I think everyone would agree they are a step below USC and Texas. Should have known to never bet against Miami when they are an underdog.

    2005-2006 MLB Offseason thread

You arbitrarily pull Trot Nixon's salary, on a contract that was signed after his excellent 2003 season, as your proof of Jacque Jones' value? Whaaaa? First off saying Jones is better than Nixon is debatable. I'd take a healty Nixon over Jones, of course Trot ain't been very healthy the last couple of years. Good defense doesn't make up for him being mediocre offensively the last two years at a prime offensive position and certainly not worth a $3.5 million pay raise. Move him to center and it raises his value a little.

ESPN's "exclusive" announcement is in a couple of hours but it has already been leaked that Derek Jeter has won the Gold Glove at shortstop for the second straight year. I guess unecessarily diving into the stands after he caught a foul ball last year has carried him two awards and probably now has it nailed down for the rest of this decade. Wonderful.
