Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 1

Yes I select the games myself instead of going with just the national t.v. games like I started doing the last few weeks of the year in 2004. I felt Oregon/Houston, while not a great match up, will be more competitive that CF/SC. I still will always have a Thursday and Friday game every week since they will be related the tiebreak quesiton regardless if there is a good match up or not. There is actually about 10 games on Thursday this week but none of them are very good.

Ben Sheets is out for the year with a strained lat muscle. Last night the Brewers said he'd be fine. Oops. Rich Harden has the same injury and has been skipped one start. A's maintain he'll be fine and currently have him scheduled for Thursday in Anaheim. Hmmm.
  5. 2005 Bored’s College Football Pick ‘Em Contest It’s never too early to start sign ups for the new season. A very quick reminder on how things work. Each week you will be matched up against another poster and have to pick the winner’s from college football games being played that week. Including making picks for games there will be two tiebreaker questions based on the Thursday and Friday ESPN games that week. The schedule for each team and the games that you makes picks for are chosen by me. The regular season is 13 weeks long and there will be conference championship games and bowl games. Like last year the winner of the contest will win $50 cash from me, Vern Gagne taking the money last year. As you all remember in the first season I put together a mock BCS (Bored Championship Series) poll. It produced some bizarre results but in the end proved successful in putting the two best teams against each other for the title game. This year I’ve tweaked the system slightly. The formula still consists of your ranking in win/loss record, correct picks pct., and correct picks against pct. (aka strength of schedule). This year though I’ve made strength of schedule only worth 10% of the formula. I realized since you have no control over who you play, since I put the schedule together, it was unfair to weight it evenly with the other two factors. But I will still weigh win/loss and correct pick % evenly at 45% each. Now everybody who participated the entire season last year has been reserved a spot. If you are going to participate this year please either post in this thread or PM me. You can change schools that you represent if you’d like but it must be one that is currently not taken. There are currently one open spots available and anyone is free to take those spots and choose any school they’d like. For scheduling purposes I’ve designated real life conferences for each four conferences that I’d like making up that conference. If you change schools I may have to switch what conference you are in if need be. Teams will be listed in bold when the poster signs up. Conference aligments are subject to change. God who fucking cares? ESPN hypes the shit out of every defending champ in every sport. Patriots and Red Sox anyone? They are in the hype game, not the sports reporting game now.

2005 Bored's College Football Pick 'Em Contest

Just a little update, the Week 1 thread will be posted on Sunday. Now the first week of games stretches until Monday so I'll be posting the Week 2 thread the following Sunday before Week 1 is complete to allow the regular amount for people to submit picks. I've already selected the slate of games for Week 2 to make picks for. For Week 1 only for anyone who hasn't made picks by Thursday morning I'll send out reminder PM's as I certainly don't want anyone forfeiting the first week.

A's lose to the Royals again, concluding a horrific 4-8 homestand. Oh boy get those playoff tickets now! If the manage to go .500 over the brutal 26 game stretch it'll be a miracle.

    This Week in Baseball

Whatever, I'm just being realistic. This team wasn't nearly as good as they've been playing, nor were they nearly as bad as they were at the beginning of the season. This is an 88 win team most likely, which is not bad at all but not a playoff team. Their offense played way over their heads for two months and they've come back down to earth. They have an absolutely brutal stretch coming up as I pointed out. The odds are heavily stacked against them to win the Wild Card as the Yankees and Indians have much more favorable schedules. They did play on the road during their hot stretch but during the Macha Era they have been a very mediocre team on the road. Hey I hope they prove me wrong and the division still isn't out of the question if they do well against the Angels head-to-head.

A's have been a vastly superior team at home in the last few years. This current collapse is happening at home. They play 20 out of next 26 on the road (three at home against the Yankees in that stretch) after this weekend. It's over.

Thru four in Oakland: Royals 2, A's 1. Oh ya they should soooooooo forfeit the rest of the season if they lose this. I don't know how the hell this offense was so good for two months.

Royals are down 8-0. A's swept by the Orioles at home. Disgraceful. Yup the Royals are ending their streak this weekend. A's will be out of the Wild Card lead by possibly Friday.

First base ump blows a call for the final out of the 7th in the A's/Orioles game, Orioles then turn in a big inning. A's are in a complete freefall now. I'm praying the Royals win tonight or tomorrow in Seattle as I don't want the A's to be the one to end the streak. The team's offense is gone.

    This Week in Baseball

The A's are melting down at home. The hot streak is OVER. Angels are going to be two up and the Yankees only a game and a half back. The terrible start is biting them in the ass as they just had so little margin of error even with the incredible run they were on. I really hope this doesn't all come crumbling apart. Sorry I just don't accept this team playing this shitty at home. It just doesn't happen often.

Here's how bad the A.L. West was that year in a nutshell: At the time of the strike they had the four worst teams in the entire American League. The last place Tigers and Brewers both were a half game better than the first place Rangers when the season was ended.
