I'm so sick of the playoff debate but I have to call bullshit on this argument by Maisel. If Alabama had lost in overtime to LSU, they still would have had almost full control of their destiny to make the MNC game. If they lose that game, they drop to no lower than #5 and they would still have a shot to beat Florida in the SEC Championship game. They win that game and they still likely end up in the MNC game against the Big XII champ. After having a two loss national champ last year, I don't see how anyone can still make the "whole season is a playoff" argument with a straight face.
-
The MNC Game is in Miami this year, it was New Orleans last season. As long there is a t.v. deal in place for the BCS, you can forget about a playoff. Speaking of which... http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=485052 Getting college football away from Fox: Good The WWL's ever tightening grip on the sports world: Bad

My Picks Virginia Tech Cincinnati Notre Dame Michigan Florida Wisconsin North Carolina Oregon State BYU Baylor Oregon Florida State Kentucky Tulsa 48/331

Not to split hairs but in the Oregon State winning out scenario, USC would be considered co-champions of the Pac-10. The tiebreak just comes up to determine who gets the Rose Bowl invite.
-
I turned the game off after Hill's Favre-esque interception figuring that was the ballgame. Glad I didn't see the ending otherwise I probably would have broke something but once again it sounds like only something the 49ers can pull off. And I honestly had no idea they have John York's 27-year old son basically running the team now before they it mentioned during the game. That will end well.

No, it was created to just get one non-BCS conference school an opportunity to get a big payout and just as important to create another big payout for a BCS conference school. For me the problem isn't that Boise State probably isn't going to get into a BCS bowl, the problem is they get stuck with the crappy WAC bowls. I've said this before but they need to get rid of the automatic conference bids and have a committee like they do for the NCAA basketball tournament where they assign schools to certain bowls. That way in a case like Boise State who may get left out of the BCS bowls can go to say the Holiday Bowl or some other higher tier bowl instead of again playing another glorified home game in the Humantarian Bowl.

I find it odd that they can't seem to nail down any of the names that are in the package. We know Greg Smith is part of the deal, but I've also heard Brett Anderson, Ryan Sweeney, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez. Is it one of those guys? Two of them? None? Word is that Gonzalez has been told that he's been traded to the Rockies and that Street is still the likely third player. Since the rumor is that the Rockies are going to flip Street to another team (I know the Indians have had interest in him), I'm wondering if the hold up on the official announcement is Rockies are trying to make sure they have another deal in place for Street. In terms of the players they gave up I'm satisfied with the deal, assuming there are no last second changes. Smith was expendable and Street lost his closer job at the end of last season. Gonzalez is the only one I'll be sad to see go as even though there's some serious concerns about his plate discipline, I liked his potential and he's a fantastic defensive outfielder. Now if Brett Anderson does end up in the final deal, then they've lost their minds. Again in the great scheme of things, this is a very odd move for this organization but it's clear they've decided to be major players this offseason so maybe they will sign a Rafael Furcal. Given the delays on the Fremont ballpark it is also possible that ownership is resigned to the fact that they will be in the Coliseum longer than they want to and that in the meantime they need to put butts in the seats. Not only were the A's a bad team this year, they were also a very boring team with no marketable players. If anything, adding Holliday will be a good PR move.
-
Talks broke off with the Cardinals over the weekend. I'll reserve judgment until the prospects in the deal are known, although again I still don't think the move makes a whole lot of sense at this point since I don't see Holliday going out of his way to get an extension done with a team coming off a rebuilding year. I'm just hoping they didn't give up Trevor Cahill or Brett Anderson. Edit: Only name so far seems to be Greg Smith, which I'm fine with but obviously there will be more.

A whopping six Top 25 games this week and all with BCS bowl implications which I'll rundown. Oklahoma State at Texas Tech: The Big XII owns your college footbaw soul this year as once again the biggest game of the week comes from that conference, although for the first time in a month it doesn't involve Texas. Tech controls their own destiny to making the MNC Game while Oklahoma State probably needs too much help to get there but running the table would likely get them a BCS bowl. Note this game is regional in the ESABCPN primetime slot so I will post the coverage map when it's released, but with the other game being Cal/USC it's pretty easy to figure out what part of the country won't get this game. Alabama at LSU: Nick Saban makes his long awaited return to Baton Rouge and no game will have as much pure hatred in the stands as this one all year. Alabama obviously will be the MNC if they win out while LSU will need to win out to have any chance at one of the BCS at large spots and even then it might not be enough. Hopefully this turns out to be a decent game as the ESS EEE SEE on SEE BEE ESS games have been terrible this year. TCU at Utah: This game is Thursday night on CBS College Sports so a lot of you will have to rely on ESPN to give you updates during their game. Gee ya think the Mountain West might want to rethink their television deal that leaves them as the only conference without games televised by the WWL? It's pretty simple for Utah, win out and they are likely on their way to the Fiesta Bowl. TCU has an outside chance of still of getting in but they'll need to hop Boise State to do so. Speaking of which, the Broncos will definitely have an eye on this game as there is little to no chance that two non-BCS conference schools get BCS bids so they need Utah to lose or otherwise it's off to play another glorified home game against a 6-6 ACC team. California at USC: This is a big game for the Trojans because beyond being eliminated from MNC contention, a loss here could also kill their BCS bowl chances as they would lose out on tiebreaks to both Oregon State and Cal for the Rose Bowl. Of course being that USC has become the Notre Dame of the west coast, they may still get an at large bid in that scenario. Cal hasn't been to a Rose Bowl in my lifetime and I pray it stays that way. Ohio State at Northwestern. The Buckeyes may not lose the MNC game again this year but win out and they are a lock for a BCS at large bid. Northwestern's only chance at a shocking BCS bid would be to run the table and hope Penn State makes the MNC game which would then make the Wildcats a replacement candidate for the Rose Bowl. Georgia Tech at North Carolina. The Clusterfuck to Tampa continues! The winner of this game probably emerges the favorite to win the conference and the Orange Bowl bid but becoming the favorite in the ACC usually means you lose the following week. If you think the Big XII South tiebreak scenarios are a headache, it could get much worse in both divisions of the ACC. Coverage note, ESABCPN passed on this game for Clemson/FSU so it's off to Raycom. And through the magic of the internet...Charles Gordon's ankle does something it shouldn't do.
-
What is this referring to, anyone? I'm pretty sure he's referring to the Vikings punt returner Charles Gordon who I think broke his leg. I say I think because FOX never showed a single replay.
-
Not a whole lot to discuss this week, but we did have some small shifts in the rankings. The Top 4 all won and have separated themselves slightly from the rest of the Top 10 but the margin between the four of them is razor thin. Now #5, #6, and #7 all lost this week but all hold their overall raking but they also all lose about two rating points. The big winner this week ended up being traditional power CanadianChris as he finally cracks the Top 10 this year. Like I said we had some small shifts in the rankings and one of them is at the top. I also said I'd take a look at the conference championships but as I do every year I have to put it off for another week as there is way too much uncertainty in the standings. Obviously if you are in first place right now, you control your own destiny. In case you forgot I had to expand the schedule to 13 games this year because the college football season is a week longer this year so we still have two scheduled games left. That also means you need 7 wins to become bowl eligible and 8 to lock up a bid. Way things are looking I'm probably going to add a 10th bowl game as we already have 15 eligible teams for the 18 spots, with 12 other teams still alive. Damnn wish I had ESPNU right now. West Virginia erased a 20-7 deficit against Cincinnati with less than 1:30 to go to send the game into overtime (intentional safety by the Bearcats, touchdown with 23 seconds left, recovered onside, kicked 52 yard field goal).

Stanford loses on a touchdown with less than ten seconds in the game for the 2nd time this year and they would become bowl eligible if the held on against Oregon today. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.
