It's McGwire! Bonds' 73 already didn't have the same mystique because he was breaking a record that lasted only three years. Even if the steroid controversy hadn't happened it would have taken a very long time for "73" to gain the same recognition that "61" had.
-
He brought it up in the 2004 SOTU, just a couple of months after the BALCO story broke so it was already a big story at that point. Really the Canseco book is going to amount to nothing as he can't prove all these players were on steroids and none of the players can prove they weren't. The only players we know were on steroids are those who were associated with BALCO and even then the extent of their use is unknown outside of Giambi.
-
Whoops. Hey Billy Beane was a teammate of Canseco's longer than Tejada... Here's a little fun fact, Canseco's last game of 1997 with the A's was August 26th. Tejada's MLB debut was August 27th. THE PLOT THICKENS!
-
Although he wasn't a teammate of Canseco's, remember THIS guy was once caught with steroids, so I guess literally anyone could have been. As for actual teammates, Canseco had 537 in his career. So every guy on this list is a suspect! Reportedly Canseco mentions more names in the 60 Minutes interview on Sunday including Miguel Tejada. Edit: Here's an excellent article on the steroid fiasco. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/...teroids-column/

Okay this really has nothing to do with the offseason and only probably Al will care about this list but I didn't really think it was worth it's own thread. I've assembled the Top 100 players in total Win Shares while playing with the Oakland A's (just the Oakland club, not the Athletics franchise). This what they did with Oakland, not an assesment of a player's entire career. I broke ties by ranking the player with less playing time with the A's higher. 1. Rickey Henderson 2. Reggie Jackson 3. Mark McGwire 4. Sal Bando 5. Bert Campaneris 6. Jose Canseco 7. Jason Giambi 8. Dwayne Murphy 9. Carney Lansford 10. Terry Steinbach 11. Joe Rudi 12. Miguel Tejada 13. Vida Blue 14. Gene Tenace 15. Catfish Hunter 16. Eric Chavez 17. Dennis Eckersley 18. Tim Hudson 19. Rollie Fingers 20. Dave Henderson 21. Dave Stewart 22. Tony Phillips 23. Billy North 24. Wayne Gross 25. Rick Monday 26. Mike Davis 27. Barry Zito 28. Rick Langford 29. Mark Mulder 30. Dick Green 31. Tony Armas 32. Mike Bordick 33. Matt Stairs 34. Mitchell Page 35. Ken Holtzman 36. Bob Welch 37. Blue Moon Odom 38. How long before Branch signs with the Raiders?

I'll will be SHOCKED if Brady isn't given the MVP. I think there's no clear cut winner this year and the quarterback always wins in that situation.

Good to know four hour erections are still in this year.

I hope the NFL makes both teams do individual introductions. The coming out as a team thing was cute the first time the Patriots did it but when both teams did it last year it was just annoying. Hell I wish they'd introduce both the offensive and defensive starters for both teams instead of just one unit.

Whoops didn't see this thread, should probably combine them. Remember Jose originally couldn't find anyone to publish this book so I'm sure he's added some embellishments that make the book a bit jucier so it would get published. The man really doesn't have a lot of credibility.
-
Hellooooooooo publicity stunt! Nothing good is going to come of this.
-
Yup I searched all I could but Yahoo's are as far back as batter vs. hitter splits goes it appears. Best I can come up with is Orlando Cabrera has the most at bats (17) against Randy Johnson without striking out. Oh and Mike Marshall lead the Majors in 1984 with three homeruns when there was a full moon.
-
Eight palyers (Dave Winfield, Jim Rice, Ron Kittle, Dave Kingman, Tim Wallach, Cesar Cedeno, Joel Youngblood, Mike Marhsall) all each hit a homerun on June 13, 1984 when there was a full moon. DUH!!!

It still amazes me that Arizona was able to get a new stadium. How the hell will they even fill the place up? The franchise will never and has never had the type of sustained success that can keep fans interested with the Bidwell family owning it.
-
I made a list ranking every Super Bowl I remember seeing last year on the board so I'll just C&P it. With last year's game I'd probably slot it at #2. My personal #1 will never be knocked off.
-
Completely unrelated but how are the '86 Mets a "Cinderella story"? Those stupid ESPN Disney World commercials have Peter Gammons saying this. Is there a deleted scene in Cinderella where she does a lot of coke?
-
That .378 looks mighty flukey and in a small sample compared to his career .334 OBP.
-
Burnitz in Chicago could potentially be a disaster. We all know the ball travels well in Coors but it's especially favorable to left handed hitters. Wrigley on the other hand is just the opposite as it can be very tough on left handed hitters. He'll be 36 and six years removed from his best season.

It's today at 4 PM EST/1 PM PST on ESPN2. I won't be around to watch the game but it will have plenty of top prospects and Mel Kiper's hair so should create some draft discussion. 2005 Senior Bowl South Team – Coaching Staff: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB 17 Jason Campbell 6-4 221 Auburn QB 14 David Greene 6-3 231 Georgia QB 16 Brock Berlin 6-1 215 Miami (FL) RB 30 Nehemiah Broughton 5-11 252 The Citadel RB 25 Kay-Jay Harris 6-0 229 West Virginia RB 21 Cedric Houston 5-11 215 Tennessee RB 23 Will Mathews 6-1 259 Texas RB 24 Cadillac Williams 5-11 212 Auburn WR 1 Reggie Brown 6-1 197 Georgia WR 20 Airese Currie 5-10 178 Clemson WR 82 Fred Gibson 6-4 193 Georgia WR 9 Matt Jones 6-6 237 Arkansas WR 11 Craphonso Thorpe 6-1 189 Florida State WR 3 Roydell Williams 6-0 187 Tulane TE 84 Alex Holmes 6-1 269 USC TE 85 Cody McCarty 6-4 267 TCU OL 70 Wesley Britt 6-7 313 Alabama OL 72 Jason Brown 6-2 332 North Carolina OL 76 Marcus Johnson 6-6 316 Ole Miss OL 71 Logan Mankins 6-3 317 Fresno State OL 51 Evan Mathis 6-5 308 Alabama OL 78 Chris Myers 6-4 302 Miami (FL) OL 77 Jeremy Parquet 6-7 324 Southern Miss OL 60 David Stewart 6-5 315 Mississippi State OL 73 Michael Watson 6-4 289 West Virginia OL 61 Ray Willis 6-5 320 Florida State DL 97 Anthony Bryant 6-3 336 Alabama DL 85 Shaun Cody 6-4 292 USC DL 47 Jim Davis 6-3 276 Virginia Tech DL 95 George Gause 6-5 271 South Carolina DL 93 Ronald Fields 6-1 310 Mississippi State DL 99 Mike Montgomery 6-4 280 Texas A&M DL 98 Mike Patterson 6-0 292 USC DL 84 Marcus Spears 6-4 295 LSU DE/LB 94 Demarcus Ware 6-4 232 Troy LB 27 Michael Boley 6-2 225 Southern Miss LB 2 Leroy Hill 6-1 220 Clemson LB 33 Marcus Lawrence 6-2 235 South Carolina LB 54 Robert McCune 6-0 243 Louisville LB 16 Cornelius Wortham 6-2 234 Alabama DB 22 James Butler 6-2 205 Georgia Tech DB 6 Nick Collins 5-10 193 Bethune-Cookman DB 29 Travis Daniels 6-2 188 LSU DB 18 Vincent Fuller 6-1 196 Virginia Tech DB 1 Eric Green 5-11 197 Virginia Tech DB 8 Bryant McFadden 5-11 191 Florida State DB 14 Carlos Rogers 6-0 195 Auburn DB 4 Junior Rosegreen 5-11 189 Auburn DB 13 Corey Webster 6-0 202 LSU K 86 Jonathan Nichols 5-11 182 Ole Miss P 47 Dustin Colqiutt 6-1 196 Tennessee 2005 Senior Bowl North Team – Coaching Staff: Oakland Raiders QB 5 Charlie Frye 6-4 227 Akron QB 7 Dan Orlovsky 6-5 232 Connecticut QB 18 Kyle Orton 6-4 217 Purdue RB 30 J.J. Yes it will be interesting...when we get the next lockout/strike. I have a feeling this time around they won't avoid one at the last minute. Although I don't antiscipate ever having another one like the '94 strike.
