McClatchy would actually have some decent points if he wasn't one of the most frugal owners in baseball. In the end he's just another rich owner crying poor.

Hey how can you beat that 452 OPS+ in 1998? Okay it was in 10 plate appearances. Who was Armando Rios traded for in 2001? Don't look it up!
-
Ya it's like seeing Willie Mays with the Mets...
-
Mora, Tejada, Sosa, Lopez is one impressive 2 thur 5. But then you look at the starting pitching and the rest of that line-up...why even bother?
-
Fontenot, 24 years old, Triple-A Ottawa, .279/.346/.420 Just a league average third baseman in the International League so wouldn't expect much of him. Crouthers, 24 years old, Double-A Bowie, 5.03 ERA/8.6 H9/4.4 W9/8.9 K9/1.45 WHIP Yikes 24 and still in AA? Second year there for that matter and nothing impressive about him outside the K/9 ratio. Looks like a guy who should have been moved to the bullpen by now.

Saw that on ESPNews and they were are wondering what kind of a blow losing the Orioles "closer" would be to their pitching staff. And they were serious. He was an outfielder before last year when he played third base. He's really a man without a set position but obviously he'd be a corner outfielder for the Cubs, if he's traded.
-
This should probably get it's own thread but since it's not official yet, apparantly WGN radio is reporting that that Sosa will be traded to the Orioles. They also say the Cubs have another deal on the table that will bring Aubrey Huff to Chicago.
-
Alright I see where this thread is going. 2005 A's (not many have played long enough to even have a similarity score) Pitchers Chad Bradford (Age 29) - Jeff Nelson Juan Cruz (25) - Shawn Hillegas Octavio Dotel (30) - Antonio Osuna Justin Duchscherer (26) - Paul Byrd Rich Harden (22) - Jake Peavy Ricardo Rincon (34) - Graeme Lloyd Barry Zito (26) - Mike Hampton Hitters Jason Kendall (30) - Thurman Munson Eric Chavez (26) - Scott Rolen Bobby Crosby (24) - Jim Canavan Keith Ginter (28) - Geoff Blum Scott Hatteberg (34) - Tim Teufel Marco Scutaro (28) - Jay Canizaro Eric Byrnes (28) - Brian Jordan Bobby Kielty (27) - Tom Grieve Mark Kotsay (28) - Amos Otis Erubiel Durazo (30) - John Jaha

Power hitting shortstop for the Browns and Red Sox during the 40's and 50's. You want really obscure, Bobby Crosby's most similar player thru age 24 is Jim Canavan, a utility player who lasted just five years in the late 19th century.
-
Ironically enough for his career totals Mark McGwire's most similar batter is Jose Canseco, although they don't compare well at all with a score of just 807. McGwire's career numbers are very unique. Pete Rose has the most unique career numbers of any player with a similarity of score of just 674 with Paul Molitor. I've posted this before but Albert Pujols most similar batter by age for every year of his career so far has been Joe DiMaggio. His current Top 10 through age 24 also has Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Frank Robinson, and Hank Aaron.

Duchscherer is out of options and he's too important to the bullpen anyways to send down. Blanton could be optioned if he struggles. Haren has already used up at least two options. I know Johnson is a Rule V pick but as things stand right now I don't think he'll make the team. If Meyer does start the year in Sacramento then that would open up a spot in the bullpen for Johnson. Etherton is the wild card in all of this but he's going to need a great spring to make the club. They have almost too much bullpen depth at this point so I could see someone being traded during the Spring. Chad Bradford would have been in the Eric Byrnes/Mike Cameron deal if it had happened.
-
Yes he'll start the year in Sacramento and may end up being there all year. Before they added Cruz and Calero it looked like he'd make the team but now they have a ton of depth in the bullpen so there is no reason to rush him.

A's C: Jason Kendall 1B: Scott Hatteberg 2B: Keith Ginter or Mark Ellis (depending on health) 3B: Eric Chavez SS: Bobby Crosby LF: Eric Byrnes CF: Mark Kotsay RF: Nick Swisher DH: Erubial Durazo Bench Adam Melhuse Charles Thomas Bobby Kielty Ginter/Ellis or Marco Scutaro (again depending on Ellis' being healthy) Dan Johnson (only if they keep 11 pitchers but appears they will keep 12) Rotation Barry Zito Rich Harden Joe Blanton Danny Haren Dan Meyer (might start year in Triple-A) Bullpen Octavio Dotel Kiko Calero Ricardo Rincon Chad Bradford Justin Duchscherer Juan Cruz (could be in rotation if Meyer is in AAA) Keiichi Yabu (same story as Cruz) Other bullpen options: Seth Etherton, Tim Harikkala, Tyler Johnson, Chris Mabeus

Just when you thought the Yankees bench couldn't get more brutal... http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yan...eball-headlines Now Rickey Henderson will be playing for the Newark Bears a little over 20 miles away. Don't you think he could beat out Glanville for a job?
-
I think a reasonable one year flyer on him isn't that big of a risk. I am VERY suspicious of Magglio's knee right now. Career .300 hitter, and no serious market? Something's up. True but isn't the timing of Ordonez now finally talking to a team (Tigers) seem a bit convenient? It comes right as Delgado is about to sign and leaves Ordonez as the last major free agent out there. He's potentially put himself in a position where teams like the Tigers and Orioles who didn't make that big free agent signing everyone thought they would may now overpay to get him. After all Boras is his agent.
-
49ers...and I will be trading the pick most likely.
-
If Owens does start, how long will it take Joe Buck to reference Willis Reed?

Magglio Ordonez comes out of hiding. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=1974688

Let's just start a Super Bowl pool to see when Dama gets banned or is asked to be banned again. Anyways, Chad Lewis is officially out of the Super Bowl. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylc=X3oD...ov=ap&type=lgns

Bill King's (long time radio announcer for the A's and Raiders) call of the "Holy Roller" player. This was in 1978 in a Raiders-Chargers game when Ken Stabler purposely fumbled the ball forward on the last play of the game when he was about to be sacked and the ball rolled into the endzone where Dave Casper fell on it for the touchdown to win the game. The rule was changed the next year.
-
The call from the 1982 Big Game. Keith Jackson's call of the Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook hail mary against Michigan just for the "INCREDIBLE" he lets out.
-
The New York Times also says the Orioles pulled out although their article still had the Mets in it but the Mets pulling out seems to be a late breaking story. So looks like it will be the Marlins.

Freddie Mitchell this past week has already guarenteed himself a future job as another annoying studio analyst after his career is over so he'll have plenty of quotes.
