In the opening weekend of the 1987 baseball season I'm at an A's/Angels game. I'm eight years old and I look in the program for the A's roster. I look at the player's birthdays listed to find mine, October 1st. I find a player on the A's that has that birthday and he would become my favorite player from that day on. His name was Mark McGwire.

Hey good for them but how does it benefit baseball? Ooo wow the Red Sox get A-Rod and continue compare dick size with the Yankees and trying to make baseball a two team sport. Yup that really is good for baseball. I think it is still debatable how much the trades would have helped the Red Sox. Like I said they got greedy, they had other things they could have traded for like a 2nd baseman or hell how about another starting pitcher just in case Pedro and/or Schilling breakdown. Oh and its about money because of the Red Sox trying to buy a championship (hey that sounds like another team) and because poor lil' A-Rod. Awww you signed $252 million but you want to be a winner. Awww that's too bad, I'm so sorry.

How is it a blackeye for MLB? The Red Sox tried to skirt around the rules to get this deal done so they have no one to blame but themselves. Shame on them for trying to replace their best player and address a problem they don't have, which is shortstop and hitting. The Red Sox got greedy and blinded by their overwhelming need to overtake the Yankees. Also shame on A-Rod for openly campaigning to steal Nomar's job. No one put a gun to your head to play for that shitty organization in Texas and I hope you stay the rest of your career and hopefully the fans completely turn on you this year. You ain't the MVP, your the Most Valuable Whiner.

Tonight's Game GMAC Bowl: Miami of Ohio vs. Louisville, worth 18 pts. Pick Breakdown Miami of Ohio (22) - MarvinisaLunatic, 2GOLD, cartman, The Mighty Damaramu, Cuban Linx, Kotzenjunge, bps "The Truth" 21, JHawk, Bored, Landon Griffin, HarleyQuinn, Choken One, Agent Bond34, razazteca, Rob E Dangerously, teke184, the pinjockey, phoenixrising, Gatornibs, bravesfan, Edwin MacPhitso, Vern Gagne Louisville (1) - CanadianChris Once again many thanks to CanadianChris for changing their pick to Louisville for the good of the contest so this game would mean something.
-
They better get the deal done or Nomar is going to have them over the barrel when it comes to contract negotiations or might just say "fuck you" and not report to the Spring Training and demand to be traded anyways. Kevin "Cowboy Up" Millar is going to have egg on his face after throwing Nomar under the bus on national t.v. a couple of days ago.

According the A's website they are about to trade for Chris Hammond from the Yankees for a couple of scrub prospects. Yesterday the San Francisco Chronicle and today the Oakland Tribune say the A's are close to signing Arthur Rhodes and the plan is him to be their closer. It's not unheard of a career middle reliever to turn into a solid closer (see Tim Worrell last year) but its still a pretty big risk but guess they didn't want to spend the money on an inconsistent Ugueth Urbina or bother to fix the head of Armando Beneitz.

Its not listed because it took place in November. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...ST&f=30&t=44978

Thanks to CanadianChris someone had the balls to change their pick to Louisville and that will be last of any pick changing for the remainder of the contest. As for the rest of you, your a bunch of pussies!!! Well ya I didn't change my pick either but hey I was one of only two people who picked Cal in the Insight Bowl and I'm a Stanford fan so I'm no pussy!

Welcome to Bored's College Bowl Pick 'Em Contest. RULES 1. You must pick a winner FOR ALL 28 games. If you leave one out I will not count your picks. If there is a game where you have no clue about either team flip a coin for all I care just please pick a winner. 2. Each bowl game is assigned a point value from 28 (Sugar Bowl) to 1 (Hawaii Bowl). If you correctly select the winner of a game you earn the points that the game is worth (i.e. pick the Sugar right and you'll earn 28 pts). If you are wrong with your pick you earn zero points. I assigned the games their point value based on the combined BCS ranking of the teams in each game so there is no personal bias on how important I believe each game is as it is simply based on the quality of teams involved according to the BCS. I did this just to make the contest slightly more interesting than just a straight up who picks the most wins contest. TIEBREAKS (for the overall winner) 1. The contestant who picked the most bowl games correctly. 2. The contestant who picked the most games consectively correct to start the contest. 3. The contestant who picked the most games consectively correct to end the contest. 4. Fight to death OR Just call it a tie. DEADLINE You must have your picks posted by Tuesday, December 16th at 7:00 PM EST/4:00 PM PST which is the start of the New Orleans Bowl. You can NOT change your picks after that date. You can change post picks and change them between now and then if you so choose. If you do change your picks please PM me so I don't miss it. OTHER NOTES I will be participating in the contest as you could expect and I'll post my picks on the board probably in the next couple of days. I'd prefer everyone only make picks on this thread and not turn into a discussion of the bowls as we can create a seperate thread for that. So here is the full line-up of games and their point value for each game is listed in bold. December 16 New Orleans: North Texas vs. Memphis 6 pts. December 18 GMAC: Louisville vs. Miami (OH) 18 pts. December 22 Tangerine: N.C. State vs. Kansas 4 pts. December 23 Fort Worth: TCU vs. Boise State 21 pts. December 24 Las Vegas: New Mexico vs. Oregon State 8 pts. Well like I said Beane might just turn around trade him too or they might trade Duchscherer. If they do hang on to Redman my theory is that Beane is finding it impossible to find affordable ways to improve their offense, plus they still have spend some money to sign a closer, so figures it never hurts to have as much pitching as possible especially when their offense on paper looks so bad.
-
Not unless some brave soul decides to change their pick to Louisville before the game. If you've seen the original thread for the contest I'm allowing one person to change their pick for the GMAC Bowl only since no one has gone against Miami of Ohio and its the only game where eveyrone picked the same team. So at this moment the game will really mean nothing to the contest because either everyone will be a winner or everyone will be a loser.
-
HAHAHAHAHAHA I love it. Scheduling conflicts? Scott Keith suicide watch is on...now.
-
Breaking news...and shame on my fellow A's fans for ever doubting the evil genius Billy Beane Actually knowing Beane, Redman might be traded again but hey I'm happy with this and damn only giving up a middle reliever to get him.

Mariner fans rejoice! Omar Vizquel's knees have saved your GM from his own stupidity...Vizquel failed his physical. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1687504

Okay the deadline has passed and no more picks can be accepted or edited, accpet for two things. First I need Choken to make a pick for the Music City Bowl (already pm'd him) tonight or I'll void his picks. Second since no one picked Louisville in the GMAC Bowl if anyone wants to change their pick to Louisville by the kick off of 7:30 PM EST/4:30 PM PST on Thursday I will allow it. Please PM me if you change your pick for that game and that game only. No other games can be edited.
-
Rant it doesn't make sense to you trade a better hitter, 8-years younger, who makes less money for a washed up former all-star? Your crazy! It makes sense Bill Bavasi as he apparantly has the Mariners on the same 20 years of mediocrity plan that he had with the Angels.

Here is the Keys to the 2003 New Orleans Bowl from collegefootballnews.com
-
Ya but Miller is better so I'd assume they would trade to have Barrett be the back-up to whoever they sign. That being said now I'm hearing its not Miller to the A's but just a prospect. I'm confused.
-
That's what I suspected although its usually a minor leaguer. Guess that means the Cubs are definently getting Pudge or Lopez.
-
*shakes fist at double post* "Shake harder boy!"
-
As thought...the A's already traded Michael Barrett to the Cubs for a PTBNL. So they traded him for a PTBNL to get a PTBNL. Um, okay. A's also re-signed Ricardo Rincon to a two-year deal.
-
Its just an individual honor and the AP All-American team is considered the most important one. There are all-star games after the bowls in January (Senior Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game are the two biggest ones) but they have nothing to do with the All-American selections and are just showcases for NFL scouts.
-
