Bingo. The Yankees are taking a huge risk if they think Giambi will stay upright the entire length of his contract. I will say this for the Yankees, trading Johnson for Vazquez at least makes more sense than trading him for old relics in Schilling and Brown.
-
So who's going to play 1st base when Jason Giambi goes on the DL in May?
-
Hmmm I had been wondering if the Outback Bowl would pass on Tennessee to get the more geographically friendly Florida and there is the answer. Mississippi has been invited to the Cotton Bowl. Capital One Bowl is likely going to take the loser the SEC title game so yup Tennessee is going to squeezed.

Hot off the presses...Eric Milton traded to the Phillies.

You know what's weird is that in the Bay Area the assumption has been the Red Sox were offering four years and that would finally end the A's chances of signing him as they wouldn't offer more than three years but it ends up being the complete opposite. But god A's fans are pessimistic when it comes to signing free agents. Go to read the opinion of my fellow A's fans and they immediately assume that the offer by Beane is just to force the Red Sox to sign Foulke before December 7th so the A's get a first round pick, i.e. most of them think the A's are just full of shit with this offer. They completely ignore that with this offer, if accepted, Foulke gets no pay raise (he made $6 million last year) and the A's have been in talks with Fouke's agent for quite a while and its not like this is the first offer they've made and on top of that Foulke really wants to re-sign with the A's so that'd be a pretty huge risk to take on a guy that doesn't want to leave. A's fans just aren't used to their team making a real effort to sign one of their own so they assume they never will.

Spoilers off the DVDVR message board...I accidently read the the result to the Lesnar/Benoit match so I'll just put it with a spoiler tag: Dark Kidman beats some indy jobber from Philly in a boring match. The Cat beats Chuck Palumbo - AWFUL Velocity - Kanyon/Collyer v. Spanky/Dragon was pretty dang good but I'm sure they'll strip it to hell. Rhyno jobs to Bradshaw - why? Funaki jobs to Akio in a decent little match. Orlando Jordan beats an indy jobber and almost breaks his neck with a horrible neckbreaker Smackdown - Shannon Moore gets squashed by Big Show Rikishi and Scotty beat the Bashams (non title) nothing special except that Rikishi does the sunset flip sit down counter and landed right on one of the Basham's face. OUCH. Also, the Bashams have swank new bondage gimp masks. Jamie Noble beat Sakoda nothing special. Noble threw Nidia into Sakoda and then got the roll up. after the match he threw Nidia out of the ring. Chris Benoit beats John Cena Cena hits the FU and they pull the Benoit's foot was on the rope Dusty Finish and then Benoit lays on the crossface after a Big Show run-in. Everything after the restart was very good. Chavo beats Shelton Benjamin when Eddie cheats to win. Good match - crowd hated the old school work on the injured leg psyche, but fuck them. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Brock Lesnar beats Chris Benoit - AWESOME MATCH SET YOUR VCR's. Live it was a **** affair and the heat was insane. How it comes off on your tv might not do the match justice. Insane brawling throughout and all sorts of sweet stuff. Benoit hits the flying headbutt but Brock kicks out. Benoit gets Brock to tap after a ref bump but ref doesn't see. Brock hits the F5 and Benoit kicks out and the place is going fucking nuts. Finish comes when Brock nails Benoit in the leg with a chair and then puts on a sweet lucha submission hold on the leg he just hit. Ref calls the match when Benoit passes out. Despite the refbump, this was SWEET.

Must...resist...urge...to read...spoiler. Rikishi & Scotty 2 Hotty tag champs? I hope you heard wrong. Bleh they should move WGTT to Raw and dump the SD tag titles. I'm thinking Meltzer has no clue that a Smackdown video game exsists and actually thought they were going to be actual matches.

Yeah...they are HOT...wait wait I mean um, I'm outraged and appalled!

Yes...well today they did officially...Oregon to the Sun Bowl and UCLA to the Silicon Valley Bowl where Fresno State will be too. But there was actually something surprising today...Bosie State is not going to the Humanitarian Bowl. They've accepted the at-large spot to the Ft. Worth Bowl to play those pussies at TCU. Now its provisional spot based on the Big 12 getting a 2nd team in the BCS which everyone assumes they will with Texas or Kansas State if they won the title game. The WAC now gets a 4th bowl team as Tulsa takes the Humanitarian Bowl spot. This also probably ends any hope of Connecticut or Northern Illinois getting a bowl game.

I contributed to some of it but damn starting to think of maybe creating a "Non-Yankees and Red Sox Offseason Thread" or maybe a "OAO Yankees and Red Sox Offseason Thread".

No its not unacceptable you've just been spoiled. Every year 29 of 30 teams don't win a championship. Maybe you'll understand one day. One idea I would have for the Yankees to get younger is to trade Bernie Williams. If his knees are so shot that he needs to DH from now on then its time to cut the cord especially when they need Jason Giambi to DH everyday if they expect him to stay upright for his entire contract.

As a 49er fan the Yankees remind me a lot of those mid to late 90s 49er teams. Tons of talent but getting older and older every year and always trying to reload with quick fixes. They were always good and always in contention but couldn't win another Super Bowl. Finally by the end of the decade trying to reload instead of getting younger bit them in the ass and they found themselves at the bottom of the league in 1999. Now with baseball economics being different and the Yankees being able to outspend anyone so that they never will have to truly "rebuild" (which is just a buzz word for gutting the entire roster and losing over 90 games for at least couple of years) but they may need to take a step back for a year or two and try to get younger. Of course being where they play and who they are and having fans like Anglesault who deem playing in two World Series in the last three years as unacceptable they will just continue the cycle they are on. Not so bold prediction...the Yankees won't win another World Series this decade.

Bowling you over...with bowl news...and shocking news at that as TCU has accepted an invite to play in the Ft. Worth Bowl. In their own stadium. In front of their own fans. *pats self on the back for figuring this out last week when the media couldn't* Also that sets up the rest of Confernce USA, already mentioned Memphis to the New Orleans Bowl and now Louisville goes to the GMAC Bowl and Houston to the Hawaii Bowl. Seriously who did the Conference USA people blow to get five guarenteed bids? Pac-10 is almost completely set up now as Washington State is going to the Holiday Bowl, California to the Insight Bowl (GO VA TECH!!!!), and Oregon State to the Las Vegas Bowl. Here's the updated bowl list/projections. Upated through Thursday. December 16 New Orleans: North Texas vs. Memphis December 18 GMAC: Louisville vs. Miami (OH) December 22 Tangerine: N.C. State vs. Kansas December 23 Fort Worth: TCU vs. Boise State December 24 Las Vegas: New Mexico vs. Oregon State December 25 Hawaii: Houston vs. Hawaii December 26 Motor City: Bowling Green vs. Northwestern Insight: Virginia Tech vs. California December 27 Continental Tire: Pittsburgh vs. Virginia December 29 Alamo: Michigan State vs. Nebraska December 30 Houston: Texas Tech vs. Navy Holiday: Washington State vs. Kansas State Silicon Valley: Fresno State vs. UCLA December 31 Music City: Auburn vs. Wisconsin Independence: Missouri vs. Arkansas Liberty: Southern Miss vs. Utah Sun: Oregon vs. Minnesota San Francisco: Colorado State vs. Boston College January 1 Outback: Iowa vs. Florida Gator: West Virginia vs. Maryland Capital One: Purdue vs. Georgia Rose: Michigan vs. LSU Orange: Miami vs. Ohio State January 2 Cotton: Oklahoma State vs. Mississippi Peach: Clemson vs. Tennessee Fiesta: Texas vs. Florida State January 3 Humanitarian: Tulsa vs. Georgia Tech January 4 Sugar: Oklahoma vs. USC

Yes in my previous living situation my roommate had a daughter who turned six last April and when I asked the daughter what she wanted for her birthday she asked for a Brat. I had no clue what they were and went to get it and couldn't believe what they looked like. I bought it anyways for her because her mom (my roommate) was an ex-stripper and internet "model" so figured the kid was gonna grow up screwed up anyways.

Okay it isn't...but I'm lying. Notre Dame controls the world don't ya know? Also it will be completely unopposed by any other game on any other channel. Lucky us?

x-first ballot nominees Bert Blyleven x-Joe Carter Dave Concepcion x-Danny Darwin Andre Dawson x-Doug Drabek x-Dennis Eckersley x-Jim Eisenreich x-Cecil Fielder Steve Garvey Rich Gossage Keith Hernandez Tommy John x-Jimmy Key x-Dennis Martinez Don Mattingly x-Kevin Mitchell x-Paul Molitor Jack Morris Dale Murphy x-Randy Myers Dave Parker x-Terry Pendleton Jim Rice x-Juan Samuel Ryne Sandberg Lee Smith x-Dave Stieb Bruce Sutter x-Bob Tewksbury Alan Trammell Fernando Valenzuela Molitor is a first ballot lock and Eckersley most likely as well. Sandberg is the only other one that might have a chance at getting in but he'll probably have to wait one more year as there are no big name candidates for next year. Most of the other first ballot guys will get cut after the first year. Only see Key, Myers, and Carter making getting enough votes to stay on the ballot. There are no final year candidates this year.

Bowl news...Memphis is going to the New Orleans Bowl and TCU officially declined the invitation from the GMAC Bowl. It surprises absolutely no one in the media is connecting the dots to the Ft. Worth Bowl and playing a bowl game at home as they are just playing up the afraid of Miami of Ohio angle, which they might be too. Maybe no one knows where TCU is located? Interesting note the GMAC Bowl is now allowed to pick someone outside Conference USA if they want. Hey look...New BCS Top 25 from collegebcs.com 1. Oklahoma 2.06 2. USC 6.90 3. LSU 8.43 4. Michigan 10.22 5. Ohio State 14.83 6. Texas 15.18 7. Georgia 15.33 8. Florida State 18.44 9. Tennessee 20.37 10. Miami 20.89 11. Miami of Ohio 27.40 12. Iowa 27.90 13. Purdue 30.53 14. Sexson deal is finalized with a couple of players added to it. Diamondbacks get: Richie Sexson Shane Nance PTBNL Brewers get: Craig Counsell Junior Spivey Lyle Overbay Chad Moeller Chris Capuano Jorge De La Rosa One rumor to pass along is that more than a couple of sources are saying the A's are going after Mike Cameron. Kinda weird since they just trade for a center fielder in Mark Kotsay.

I'm pretty sure Bowling Green gets the Motor City Bowl invite this week. I think they were only waiting on inviting them to make sure they beat Toledo in the final game and got to the MAC title game.
-
Other bowl invites today (all expected): West Virginia to the Gator Bowl Virginia Tech to the Insight Bowl Boston College to the San Francisco Bowl Georgia Tech to the Humanitarian Bowl All ACC and Big East bids are now filled.
-
Plus the Orioles are going to be in the running for Vladimir Guerrero (who I think they will get), Javy Lopez, and Miguel Tejada so I think they'll be making plenty of noise in the next month.
-
FUCK THE RAIDERS!!!! That's what I get for picking the team I hate the most. Damnit and everyone I'm in the Wild Card race with won. Fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Okay I'm Bored enough to profile each player and their pros and cons. Bert Blyleven - Starting Pitcher - 1970-1992 - Minnesota, Texas, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, California Pros: 287 wins; 242 complete games; 60 shutouts (9th all-time); 3701 strikeouts (5th all-time); played on two world champions ('79 Pirates, '87 Twins). Cons: Only made All-Star team twice; only one 20 win season; despite his high strikeout total he only led the league once; never led league in wins or ERA. Joe Carter - Outfielder - 1983-1998 - Cleveland, San Diego, Toronto, Baltimore, San Francisco Pros: 396 homeruns; 1445 rbi; played on two world champions ('92, '93 Blue Jays); hit series winning homerun of '93 World Series. Cons: .259 career average; no major awards; only once led league in a major offensive category (rbi in '86). Dave Concepcion - Shortstop - 1970-1988 - Cincinnati Pros: Five Gold Gloves; nine-time All-Star; played on two world champions ('75, '76 Reds) Cons: Never led league in any offensive category; offensive numbers just not impressive across the board. Danny Darwin - Starting Pitcher/Middle Reliever - 1978-1998 - Texas, Milwaukee, Houston, Boston, Toronto, Pittsburgh, Chicago (AL), San Francisco Pros: Led league in ERA in 1990 (2.21). Cons: Career losing record (171-182); 321 homeruns allowed; never made an All-Star team; in and out of starting rotations the majority of his career. Andre Dawson - Outfielder - 1976-1996 - Montreal, Chicago (NL), Boston, Florida Pros: 438 homeruns; 1591 rbi; 2744 hits; 589 stolen bases; 1987 NL MVP; 1977 NL ROY; eight Gold Gloves. Cons: Only one homerun and rbi title. Doug Drabek - Starting Pitcher - 1986-1998 - New York (AL), Pittsburgh, Houston, Chicago (AL), Baltimore Pros: 1990 NL Cy Young. Cons: Only made one All-Star team; led league only once in a major pitching category (Wins in '90); only 154 career wins. Cons: Only really had two good years as a starting pitcher; two infamous postseason homeruns allowed (Gibson '88 World Series, Alomar '92 ALCS). Jim Eisenreich - Outfielder - 1982-1998; Minnesota, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Florida, Los Angeles Pros: .290 career average. Ummm...got his autograph when he was with the Royals. Cons: Primarily a pinch hitter and 4th outfielder the majority of his career; 52 homeruns and 477 rbi isn't exactly HOF numbers. Cecil Fielder - First Baseman/Designated Hitter - 1985-1998 - Toronto, Detroit, New York (AL), Anaheim, Cleveland Pros: Twice led league in homeruns; Three times led league in rbi; hit 51 homeruns in 1990 when it was still a major accomplishment. Steve Garvey - First Baseman - 1969-1987 - Los Angeles, San Diego Pros: 1974 NL MVP; 10-time All-Star; four Gold Gloves; 1978 & 1984 NLCS MVP; 2599 hits; .294 career average; 1308 rbi; holds NL record for most consectivue games played. Cons: 272 homeruns not a lot for his position; never led a major offensive category except hits ('78, '80); off the field scandal hurt his reputation. Cons: Never led league in wins or ERA; Never finished in the Top 10 strikeouts; career numbers more of just a product of playing as long as he did than anything as only had a few years where he was an elite starter. Jimmy Key - Starting Pitcher - 1984-1998 - Toronto, New York (AL), Baltimore Pros: led league in ERA in '87; led league in wins in '94; played on two world champions ('92 Blue Jays, '96 Yankees). Kevin Mitchell - Outfielder - 1984-1998 - New York (NL), San Diego, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Boston, Cleveland, Oakland Pros: 1989 NL MVP. Jack Morris - Starting Pitcher - 1977-1994 - Detroit, Minnesota, Toronto, Cleveland Pros: 254 wins; 175 complete games; 1991 World Series MVP; three 20 win seasons; played on three world champions ('84 Tigers, '91 Twins, '92 Blue Jays). Cons: Never had a sub-3 ERA; 3.90 career ERA. Dale Murphy - Outfielder - 1976-1993 - Atlanta, Philadelphia, Colorado Pros: 1982 & 1983 NL MVP; led league in homeruns and rbi both of those years; Five Gold Gloves; 398 homeruns. Cons: .265 career average; numbers took HUGE drop off after 1987. Randy Myers - Closer - 1985-1998 - New York (NL), Cincinnati, San Diego, Chicago (NL), Baltimore, Toronto Pros: 347 saves (6th all-time); three times led league in saves; 1993 NL & 1997 AL Rolaids Relief winner; 1990 NLCS MVP. Terry Pendleton - Third Baseman - 1984-1998 - St. Louis, Atlanta, Florida, Cincinnati, Kansas City Pros: 1991 NL MVP; Three Gold Gloves; twice led league in hits. Cons: Could have benefitted a lot if he could have played longer to pad his career stats a little more. Juan Samuel - Second Baseman - 1983-1998 - Philadelphia, New York (NL), Los Angeles, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Detroit, Toronto Pros: Twice led league in triples. Cons: Only 703 rbi; Led league in strikeouts four straight years from 1984 to 1987. Ryne Sandberg - Second Baseman - 1981-1994, 96-97 - Philadelphia, Chicago (NL) Pros: Nine Gold Gloves; 1984 NL MVP; 10-time All-Star; three times led league in runs; 282 homeruns a lot for his position; Best 2B in baseball during his prime. Cons: Note a huge amount of rbi; Even though great for his position his numbers might not overwhelm everyone. Lee Smith - Closer - 1980-1997 - Chicago (NL), Boston, St. Louis, New York (AL), Baltimore, California, Cincinnati, Montreal Pros: All-time save leader with 478; three-time Rolaids Relief Award winner; four times led league in saves. Cons: Reliever almost entire career; Was terrible the two years he pitched in the postseason. Dave Stieb - Starting Pitcher - 1979-1993, 98 - Toronto, Chicago (AL) Pros: Seven-time All-Star; 103 complete games. Cons: Only 176 wins; no 20 win seasons. Bruce Sutter - Closer - 1976-1988 - Chicago (NL), St. Louis, Atlanta Pros: 300 saves; 1979 NL Cy Young; four-time Rolaids Relief Awad winner; five times led league in saves. Cons: Never made a start in his career; didn't have an especially long career. Bob Tewksbury - Starting Pitcher - 1986-1998 - New York (AL), Chicago (NL), St. Louis, Texas, San Diego, Minnesota Pros: 2.16 ERA in 1992. Cons: Never led the league in any major pitching category unless you count hits allowed which he did twice; 3.92 career ERA; only 110 wins. Alan Trammell - Shortstop - 1977-1996 - Detroit Pros: Four Gold Gloves; 1984 World Series MVP; Numbers in his prime were excellent for a shortstop then. Cons: Influx of offensive shortstops makes his career numbers look unimpressive and not close to his contemporary in Cal Ripken; Never finished higher than 3rd in any major offensive category (3rd in hits in '87). Fernando Valenzuela - Starting Pitcher - 1980-1997 - Los Angeles, California, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Diego, St. Louis Pros: 1981 NL Cy Young & ROY; One Gold Glove; three times led league in complete games. Cons: Only a big time pitcher in the early portion of his career and injuries turned him into a very mediocre pitcher the second half of his career.
