    Random A's Highlights

While I'm still trying to figure out what to do next with this blog, King Kamala's post about the A's 20th straight win in 2002 in offseason thread reminded me that I recently tripped upon some old A's highlights. This past season was the A's 40th year in Oakland and they had some Top 40 Moments poll, which I didn't even realize until after the season, but I guess on MLB.com at one point they posted a ton of old A's clips. I think they've been taken down off the A's site since then but by accident I found them with a url to the Cubs website of all places. Almost all the clips from the 70's and 80's were old MLB home video footage but there were some cool 90's and 2000's clips in there with many of them having the radio call by the legendary Bill King. Here are the more choice ones that I found, or were at least the ones that were still working. I was disappointed that the clip to Ramon Hernandez's game winning bunt single in Game 1 of the '03 ALDS was not working. October 18, 1988 vs. Los Angeles - Mark McGwire's forgotten walk off in Game 3 of the '88 World Series June 29, 1990 at Toronto - Final out of Dave Stewart's no hitter August 15, 1990 vs. Boston - Mark McGwire walk off grand slam October 1, 2000 vs. Texas - Final out of division clinching win -Was at this game and it was my birthday too. August 12, 2001 vs. New York - Jason Giambi walk off to sweep the Yankees September 1, 2002 vs. Minnesota - Miguel Tejada walk off for 18th straight win September 4, 2002 vs. Kansas City - Scott Hatteberg walk off for record 20th straight win -Covered this game in a prior entry.

    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

Clip of Hatteberg's home run I was at that game and it went from being the worst game I'd ever been to the best with one swing. I just about near threw up when the Royals tied the game. It was absolutely inconceivable for a team that had won 19 games in a row to blow an 11 run lead to any team, let alone the Royals. There's a great chapter in Moneyball with a detailed account of the game.

RICKEY~ and Jim Rice elected to HOF

Really? He's a shoo-in in my mind. Do you think the spitting incident will keep him out next year? Seems kind of silly in light of all the guys not getting in because of PEDs. With the arbitrary nature of why a writer does or does not vote for a guy makes me think without a doubt that some will not vote for him, at least on the first ballot, due to the spitting incident. It won't matter them about him becoming friends with the umpire later, baseball writers never let facts get in the way of their own perceptions or opinions. Also I don't think Alomar will be looked at as an "inner circle" candidate like RICKEY~ was or Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn were in 2007. For a recent example of a second baseman and how they faired, Ryne Sandberg didn't get in on the first ballot (barely got in on the second) and he was a former MVP with a squeaky clean image. Now I wouldn't be surprised if Alomar does it get in on the first ballot but it will be close. In fact there's an outside chance the writers will fail to elect someone next year. Dawson is the only other player who has a shot but the 40+ votes he needs is a lot to make up in one year.

RICKEY~ and Jim Rice elected to HOF

In case anyone was wondering the biggest names to join next year's ballot are Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez, and Fred McGriff. Out of the four I think only Alomar has a shot next year but I don't think he'll get in on the first ballot. Larkin should get in at some point but the lack of support of Alan Trammell over the years makes me doubt that will happen. Really? I mean, why bother? Pedro Gomez was one of them. Some writers do always vote ten players and if they want to throw in someone who was a favorite of there's that is fine. Gomez though had three open spots on his ballot yet elected to pick Bell over the likes Blyleven, Raines, and McGwire.

28 voters ended up leaving RICKEY~ off the ballot. No other first ballot players received enough votes to stay on the ballot. Both McGwire and Raines lost ten votes this year. 17. Okay on to the the second half of what has been a surprisingly entertaining bowl season to this point although there's still plenty of time for disappointment. While Utah/Ohio State and Texas/Alabama would have been far better match-ups, this year's BCS games are at least much more intriguing than last year. It seemed last season the BCS bowls went out of their way to come up with the least compelling slate of games as they possibly could. Thank God for the Rose Bowl as the January 1st line-up looks atrocious this year outside the GOTA. I'll post a thread for MNC game sometime this weekend. The College Football Thread 12/31 - 1/6

As expected, Jeff Jagodzinski has been fired by Boston College AD Gene DiFilippo due to him interviewing for the Jets' head coach position. How dare any coach think of leaving an elite college football institution like Boston College for an NFL job? He should be grateful to even step foot on their campus let alone coach the team. With anything there's always more to the story than the general public knows and I don't follow BC closely enough to know if Jagodzinski was a good coach or not but this whole situation seems rather silly.
