    The Old School questions thread

That's what I was getting at. I think that the wheel actually malfunctioned, though there's no way to verify that.
  2. Bulldog peaked around '92 as a solo worker, then didn't do much after that. I don't recall any of his WCW stuff being all that good. Personally, I think his best stuff was always as a tag team wrestler...obviously the British Bulldogs were phenomenal, but his team with Owen Hart was one of my all time favorite tag teams.

    The OAO 7/7 Smackdown! Thread

Has it been explained what a "Punjabi Prison match" is yet? I'm guessing that's just WWE code for "no count outs, no DQs."

    ECW tidbit from the Observer

Personally, I didn't expect it to be like the old ECW, at least not completely. I mean, they don't have a lot of the old ECW main eventers like Raven, the Dudleyz, Shane Douglas, etc. Tazz and Lance Storm are essentially retired, Tommy Dreamer and Sandman are old, Justin Credible has been seen as a jobber for the past five years...you know, I could go on and on, but all that stuff should be obvious as to why this ECW couldn't be like the old ECW. Bringing in guys like Kurt Angle and Big Show made sense as far as giving the new ECW something to work with. I mean, what else were they going to do? Build the promotion around Balls Mahoney and the FBI? However, what I didn't expect, was that this new ECW would be so badly booked and terrible from the get-go. It's natural that a new promotion would take a while to find its ground (look at the early episodes of TNA as a perfect example), but this new ECW has no apparent direction right now, and the TV shows have been generally awful so far. I mean, when the crowd is crapping all over guys like Test and Mike Knox, and cheering for people like Sabu and RVD, it should be obvious what direction they should go in...but Vince won't listen to the fans. He's dead set on having things his way, or no way at all. That means no more all-out hardcore matches ("Extreme rules" will be reserved for title or special matches, it seems). The fact they seem intent on building the shows around Kelly, a character who is completely out of place and terrible (and has no apparent talent to boot), further solidifies this fact. The most frustrating thing is that WWE already has a template for a successful ECW...all they have to do is go back and watch "The Rise and Fall of ECW" on DVD, and that will lay it out for them pretty easily. That should give them an idea of what the crowd wants and expects...but I think again, Vince McMahon is dead set on creating his own vision of ECW, and it's basically an alternate version of Monday Night RAW. The only problem is, we already have that on Friday nights. Vince has the chance to go after TNA's market of hardcore, internet-savvy wrestling fans, but so far they've just totally blown it on all levels. I really do wish some of the old ECW guard would step up and tell Vince or Kevin Dunn or whoever the hell is running this thing about these issues. I mean, listening to Joey Styles and Tazz act as the JR and King of ECW is almost painful, and is really just further ruining the credibility of this "promotion" completely. I don't expect Styles to go renegade and crap all over stuff like the Zombie and Mike Knox, but when the crowd is totally booing someone or chanting stuff at Test, at least have the integrity to acknowledge it to the fans watching at home.

That's a pretty good interview, thanks for posting it.

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

As weird and cool as that would've been, probably best it didn't happen for WWF in the long run.

North Korea Agrees to end Nuke Program

I wasn't saying I thought they _should_ use a nuclear weapon, just stating my thoughts about whether the international community would let us get away with it at this point. In other news, the US is now offering to hold side bilateral talks with North Korea if the "DPRK" returns to the six party talks. Seems like we're giving in to their demands after they broke the international community's wishes by launching missiles, but I guess it works if we get them back to the six party talks.

North Korea Agrees to end Nuke Program

Yes, let's have more diplomacy with the madman dictator, since that has been working so well for the last ten years.

Wow, that kid must be popular at school.

    Little Man

This movie definitely is a rip-off of old Bugs Bunny cartoons...but the teeny boppers and stuff will flock to this movie thinking that it's such a cool, funny, and original concept.

    10th Anniversary of NWO Formation

Even worse is that Hulk Hogan may be wrestling again, yet this year.

North Korea Agrees to end Nuke Program

Don't need an army, just some bombs and missiles of our own.

    TWiB 7/3 - 7/9

I was at Miller Park last night, and it was glorious. Not nearly as many Cubbie fans as usual, and my wife and I both got free "Take Back Miller Park" t-shirts. I stood up and clapped sarcastically when they announced Dusty Baker's name, much to the chagrin of a couple nearby Cubs fans. Also, I love how the Cubs fans will get excited on routine flyouts which would be home runs in the minor league ballpark that is Wrigley Field. Capuano now has 10 wins...he really should be on the All Star team if any opportunity arises. I'm sure Garner will be pressured to pick Oswalt or someone else on his team, though.

    Casualties of War II:

Who is "WE"? I don't expect them to do the job perfectly on their third tour of duty, but obviously guys like Bush, Rumsfield, Wolfowitz etc.....think it is no big deal seeing as how shitty they managed to plan the occupation. I think a lot of the left's very argument is that these soliders should not be on their third tour of duty in Iraq and should be HOME. If you listen to a lot of the vocal left such as Murtha, he is essentially saying that because the Soliders have been over there for so long under these shit conditions, without proper equipment and without a clear plan to "win" these types of incidents are going to start happening. I agree 100%. It is the Bush administration's fault, and also Congress' for not calling them on it. John Kerry and John McCain should be stepping up as veterans and talking about this, and ask Bush why some of these soldiers have been there for so long. Again, I'm not excusing what these soldiers did, if its true. But, I think its dishonest to not expect things like this to develop.

North Korea Agrees to end Nuke Program

Yeah, I've heard at least 7, but as many as 10. Not that it really makes a difference. If the thing about Hawaii is true, I think that would be enough to declare war on North Korea.

    Most nonsensical debuts

I remember Iron Shiek in '89 WCW, but how did he debut? Was it a big deal, or did he just kind of show up in a match one day?

    ECW Shirt Poll

Boy, those shirts sure represent the current bloody, hardcore style that we're seeing in the new ECW
  18. This is mainly related to WWE, but I felt it was more appropriate in this folder. For quite a few years, mainly during the late '90s and early '00s, the jobber was a rarely seen creature in the world of American pro-wrestling. Once WCW and ECW died off from their first incarnations, the jobber virtually went extinct on US televised wrestling programs. Virtually all matches on WWE TV featured two known "stars". Certainly some wresters jobbed more often than not, but none of them were of true "jobber" stock. They all had gimmicks of some kind, and you actually recognized them when their name was announced by Lillian Garcia, and thieir entrance music played. Sure, once in a while on an epsisode of Sunday Night Heat or Velocity, you might see one, but surely never on RAW or Smackdown. Recently, however, the jobber species has become resurgent. We now see Umaga squashing various locals and journeymen on a regular basis. These pasty skinned, colorful tight wearing, apparitions from the past have seemingly found a new place in WWE. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Where does the jobber go from here?

    The Old School questions thread

Think about that one for a second. Really. One theory I remember being floated was that the match was rigged to be a steel cage match (since there was one above the ring and all), but that something must've screwed up, and it landed on the coal miner's glove match. As an aside, has there ever been a GOOD coal miner's glove match in wrestling history? The only way I could see it being interesting if one of the wrestlers uses a heart punch or an iron claw as a finisher.

    Weird Former ECW Alumni

They were basically brawling heels. I don't think they were ever as hardcore as some people on the 'net made them out to be. They acted a lot like they did in WWF, but in a more heelish way, without being so "fun" and "kid friendly". Kind of picture a New Zealand hickish "outback" version of the Nasty Boys, and you have the Sheepherders.

    TWiB 7/3 - 7/9

For the record, the two Brewers infielders involved in that catch last night were Corey Koskie and Bill Hall (the one who ended up catching it). It's nice that Hall has been getting quite a bit of recognition on BBTN lately.

Yeah, it was a Vince Russo "swerve", basically.

    Excellent Randy Orton Interview

I'm guessing Orton is fairly tight with HBK and HHH. I'd assume those comments are a joke, more than anything. As far as Scott Norton, he actually was portrayed as a fairly dangerous big man in WCW, for a year or two anyway. His team with Buff Bagwell also got a pretty good push, but that's neither here nor there.

How do you feel about Iraq?

What would you have done? Held a peace conference with Osama bin Laden where we could have talked about our feelings, and how sorry we were for helping him kick the commie-atheist Soviet Union out of Afghanistan? Then, maybe George W. Bush and Osama could have joined hands and engaged in a stirring rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine", right before bin Laden headed back to Afghanistan to thank Allah and plan how to cut our throats next.

President of Iran sends a letter to George W. Bush

Yeah! Everyone knows that none of them there A-rabs are to be trusted!! You can trash conservatives for shitting on this guy.....but conservatives don't go: "You know, outside of denying the holocaust and 9/11, he makes a lot of sense!" Conservatives sort of tend to not look past the not-insignificant fact that this guy is DENYING the Holocaust and saying that 9/11 was an inside job (which, hey, is a Democrat talking point in some circles). I can't POSSIBLY imagine why people wouldn't trust this guy when he says that the nuclear program is just for energy purposes. I'm sure that him denying the Holocaust and going around saying, on numerous occasions, that Israel needs to be wiped off the face of the earth, has nothing to do with it. I'm shocked that there is ANYBODY who doesn't trust this man and his word. Shocked to my core. The problem with this line of thinking is that those who spout it, ido so in regards to our military actions in Iraq or Afghanistan or elsewhere. They don't seem to be arguing the same thing when it comes to providing money and aid to the U.N. or any of the dozens / hundreds of nations we provide money & aid to every year. You don't get it both ways. You want a policy of isolationism, let it be across the board. Either accept the fact that we're a superpower who's going to get involved in things if we believe it's in our best interests, or let's cease to involve ourselves in foreign affairs completely, which means telling the rest of the world to deal with their own fucking problems when they come looking to us for a handout. That sums up my feelings perfectly, thank you. The UN either needs to let us be involved militarily where appropriate if THEY (the biggest super-national body in the world) aren't going to do anything about warlords and dictators, or not expect us to bail out every country in the world hit with a disaster or famine.
