Who here supports the current administration?

The margin they had him losing by was within the poll's margin of error. Bush's approval ratings, even if you take the margin of error into consideration, are horrible. I've been riding on the "I Hate George W. Bush" bandwagon since 1999. I'm glad the rest of the country decided to finally wake up.

Its nothing like that at all. Under Bush, spending has gone up from $1.8632 trillion in 2001 to $2.4722 trillion in 2005--a 24% increase. As of 2005, revenue finally bounced back to pre-Bush levels, and was 8% higher in 2005 than it was in 2001. Here, knock yourselves out, guys.

School Bans Cell Phones in NY

My school's pretty good about letting kids use te phone to contact parents. If there's to be a cell phone ban, this is a compromise the school needs to be willing to make. We don't have pay phones in our building, but I know that's not typical. Of course its unrealistic to expect every student to follow every rule all of the time, but that doesn't mean the rules shouldn't exist. The penalty for getting caught using a cell phone in school is that you have to pick your phone up from the office at the end of the day. I'll tell you this...I'm guessing the implication of this new policy went something like this: 1. Teachers were having a hard time because cell phones kept going off. 2. Teachers would tell kids to turn the phone off, but half of the kids would forget. 3. Teachers would try to punish the repeat offenders, but this was uneffective without a building-wide policy. (If you have ANY rule in your class that is different than the rules any other teachers have--whether its food, sode, gum, etc.--kids will try to argue against the fairness of the rule by saying other teachers allow it. I make it a policy not to argue with kids, but good luck getting a kid to shut up about something if they think they're being treated even the tiniest bit unfairly.) 4. Teachers ask for a buildng-wide ban, so the rule will be enforced evenly (in theory). 5. Principal or district level adminstrator decides to extend ban to entire building because of other problems associated with cell phones, and figures it be easiest just to ban them outright, and not have to worry about establishing a set of protocols for when it is or isn't appropriate (which 75% of kids are going to ignore anyways).

He seemed like a throwback to a previous era in American history when they'd been largely ignored by the government and scorned by society as a whole. His attitude toward the urban poor was that many of them were jobless on purpose so they could get a government hand-out. He cut many anti-poverty programs that many poor blacks relied on. He didn't support sanctions against South Africa. He didn't make a bunch of appointment to make his cabinet ethnically diverse.

School Bans Cell Phones in NY

The same could be said of your cell phone while you are at work, but i will be fucking damned if my job was to tell me that I couldn't bring a cell to work. I don't think you understand the difference between high school and a job, or the difference between children and adults. He's right, as far as teachers having cell phones goes. The teacher shouldn't be allowed to interrupt the class for their own personal issues if the student can't. That kind of goes without saying. Same goes for teachers checking their personal e-mail. Class time should be time devoted to helping students, not for personal matters. If they need to call their parents to check something, they can do it from the office. Who else could they possibly need to call during the school day? Everyone else they know should also be AT SCHOOL. Students are not entrepenuers. They are not doctors. They are not lawyers. There's simply no need for students to have cell phoes at school. We didn't even HAVE cell phones when I was in high school (this was the early 90s before they were widespread and affordable). We didn't have iPods either. Since there's nothing about either device that's necessary for school, I don't see why students today feel they are entitled to use those things at school. In addition to there not being any reason to let students use cell phones, here's some good reasons NOT to let kids have cell phones at school: -camera phones can be used to cheat -text messaging could be used to cheat or harrass other students -phones ringing is a disruption to class (despite in-class bans, it still happens) -phones kept in lockers are targets for theft -there's no way you can use a phone in between classes anyways, since most hallways are too loud during passing periods -cell phones could be used for drug deals (yes, I know...high school kids would never buy or sell drugs, but I wanted to cover all the options here)

Who here supports the current administration?

Oh not this argument again. Of course there should be certain areas that are the responsibility of the public. No reasonable man is advocating private roads. But could it really hurt to scale back the role of government? The point was that there's all kinds of things the government helps us with that we don't think about. Thus, for someone to say "If you want to help people, do it yourself. Dont force me to give up my own cash to finance it" (which you conveniently omitted from your quote of my response) overlooks things like state-funded universities, the FDA, student loans (which govt subsidizes the interest rates for), unemployment benefits for the temporarily unemployed, etc. Government programs work best when programs help people help themselves, but even that takes money.

I still say there's no reason for kids to have cell phones at school. If there's an emergency, their parents can call the school and have the kid sent down to the office.

Is Steve McQueen cooler than James Dean?

While both men were avid automobile enthusiasts, I think its safe to say McQueen was probably the more skilled driver of the two.

    Smallville Season 5 Thread

There were some that I liked, of course, but for the most part I just wanted them to get on with the next installment of the mythology stories. The episode "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" was an exception, of course. "That was Detective Manners. He said they just found your bleepin' UFO."

Here's the plot for "Superman: Brainiac Attacks" from amazon.com (on sale June 20th) Sounds like a nice way to wrap a few few dangling plot thread left over from Justice League. And Tim Daly's doing the voice of Superman for this.

There isn't a single reason a kid needs to have a cell phone at school. Not one.

Buchanan was definitely the worst. Harding was merely the worst of the 20th century. Compared to many of the horrible presidents of the 19th century, he was average. 19th century is basically: Lincoln, Jackson, Jefferson, Polk, and a bunch of 3rd stringers. Believe it or not, the 20th century produced some of the best leaders we ever had.

    Superman Returns Trailer

Or rather potentially how good they can be. Moore gave most of those villains on that story a mean streak, an edge so to speak that they lacked in all their previous showings. I think it was Lois or Supes himself that said that before that fateful day all of them were nothing more than nuisances. That's exactly what most of Superman's rouge gallery really are. There's no reason they couldn't be that way in a movie.
