Oh, that's right....I think he used the U2 song as they were all just standing around for 20 minutes after the speech and at campaign appearances. And, um, Van Halen (even the Sammy Hagar version) at a major party's nominating convention? I'm getting old. Here's a transcript of the speech tonight: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/us/polit...text-obama.html

I think, if I remember correctly, in 2004 John Kerry used Springsteen's "No Surrender" as his entrance music, and "Beautiful Day" by U2 at the end. What were the songs used tonight? I couldn't tell or didn't recognize them. Republicans complaining about or criticizing Obama's speech tonight are going to sound as convincing as people who hated The Dark Knight, but went and saw Mama Mia! 2 or 3 times.

After his 2 acceptance speeches, Bill Clinton used "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac in 1992, and "Beginnings" by Chicago in 1996. Those are both good songs. I was very pleased with the speech. He hit every point he needed to, and did so with conviction. He also did my favorite thing from his speech 4 years ago: he acknowledged that there are people who disagree with him in a respectful way, and invited them to work together with him toward the same goals. I'm also pleased with the venue....the sight of him in front of 75,000 supporters was striking.

Oh, look, it's Michael McDonald. I would rather watch "Beautician And The Beast" than listen to Michael McDonald. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothin' against him, but if I hear "Yah Mo B There" one more time, "Yah Mo" burn this place to the ground. In other news... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080828/ap_on_.../cvn_veepstakes

It just seemed they were trying to put out the absolute impossible worst case scenario. Like last night they were begging Bill Clinton to subliminally attack Obama, then when he didnt, his speech was "Ok" or the Karl Rove, "He didnt do enough" or that annoying nitpicking they do when it was obvious Bill brought the house down. Despite the fact that they're trying to portray him as a "Fox New Contributor," which they probably want us to think is akin to being a news analyst, Rove is really nothing more than a Republican operative trying to spin things to make everything the Democrats do sound bad. He's not calling it like he sees it at all, he's reworking what happened to fit his point of view. This is different than journalists like Fred Barnes or Juan Williams, who probably actually believe what they're saying, even if it is biased.

That whole "McCain was wrong when Obama was right" sequence in Biden's speech was perfect. I stuck with PBS coverage all night, and I'm much saner for it. The idiots running McCain's campaign have not gone on vacation this week... http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080828/pl_politico/12918 The only reason the tactic worked before is because it was foreigners cheering Obama. 80,000 Americans cheering Obama in a Republican ad? Pure lunacy.

Bill Clinton's speech tonight hit the bull's eye. He didn't just endorse Obama, he made the argument for WHY he should be president. Tonight's been a vast improvement. Kerry's on now, getting some good jabs in. Even Evan Bayh was using some hard attacks.

How is a speech (and video) that primarily celebrates her own place in the women's rights movement as the first woman to almost win a major party nomination (or whatever it is she thinks she deserves credit for) not an exercise in narcisism? I'm not the only person who noticed those things about it. And, yes, it was poorly delivered. She pauses every five words. As if she is waiting. For the stupid teleprompter to. Catch up with her talking! edit: In fairness, the task of running for this high of an office is partially an exercise in narcisism, and Obama will certainly have his moments in the coming days and weeks. The most important question wasn't "how good was it?" but "did it work?" Since I wasn't the target audience for the speech, I'll have to wait and see.

Some Republican lady was talking to Greta Van Something on Fox later...Hillary is wonderful, and why oh, why did Obama scorn her? I'm guessing later she'll work in how Hillary said many damning things about Obama during the campaign in an attempt to show Obama won't be a good president, without any ironic appreciation of how she just answered her own question from earlier. Meanwhile, the other networks continue to show Democratic operative after Democratic operative shower love on Hillary for being gracious enough to mention Obama a few times in passing in her "Hillary's Very Special Salute to Hillary" speech tonight.

I think I've died and gone to Democratic Party cliché hell. Not a good speech at all, in either construction or delivery. The only time it came alive is when she was talking about Stephanie Tubbs-Jones and then the Women's Movement. I actually agree with the Fox News analysis tonight: this was a minimal endorsement, with the only reason to vote for Obama is that he is a Democrat just like her. Apparently reminicing about the novelty of a woman running for president is a more urgent topic than explaining why Obama doesn't really suck as much as she said he did a couple of months ago. By contrast, MSNBC's and CNN's analysts acted like she gave the best speech ever. Hopefully, this is the last time we ever have to hear about Hillary during this campaign, but I just know Bill's going to mention her 1,200 times tomorrow night.
-
Hopefully she's now (finally) starting the transition into "Why Obama should be president."

Hillary video recap: "I'm a woman running for president, I'm a woman running for president, look at me, I'm a woman running for president!"

Governor of Montana.

Deval Patrick...good speech content-wise, but dull delivery. Also, I suspect every other speaking in this convention has ties to the now mythic South Side of Chicago. Gov. Schweitzer is on now, giving a speech deriding John McCain's energy policy. Not a great delivery, but he seems to actually care about what he's talking about. Spoke too soon....he's warming up...cheap pops all around...he's morphing into Mick Foley right before my eyes. Hillary's on next...

Mark Warner....speech...getting...so sleepy...

I was wondering if this was gonna come up again... John McCain’s Democratic colleagues in the Senate are zeroing in on his oft-discussed temper, questioning whether the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is too volatile to be commander in chief. Next up...revisiting every vulgar comment McCain's ever made in public, I suppose. This worries me, though: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26404528/

Heh. It's going to take a lot more than 4 short years for America to get anywhere close to electing a black president, no matter how good of a speaker he is. Besides, NO WAY the Democrats EVER would vote for a black man to be President. The first black President will be a Republican. -=Mike Now THAT is golden. The first 10 or so pages of this thread are pretty fucking funny, too, though. But, I also said... ...so I wasn't COMPLETELY off base.

Watching Rove, I was reminded of the post-debate spin the Republicans gave after the first Bush/Kerry debate. Bagala's making a good point on CNN right now. Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama are NOT the people who should be attacking John McCain. They're the good cops tonight, let Hillary Clinton and Mark Warner be the bad cops tomorrow night.
-
Carville said that they botched it too. Carville's wrong. Policies are important, but 90% of the attacks right now are against Barack and Michelle's values and personalities, not their policies. True, that's Democrats playing defense, but a necessary component of winning people's votes is getting them to LIKE Barack and Michelle.
-
So, Fox is going to interview Republicans during the Democratic Convention, and...Republicans during the Republican Convention? Karl Rove just said Michelle Obama didn't do enough prove she loved America tonight, and didn't seem particularly warm towards her husband. WTF??? Then Chris Wallace essentially just repeated it... "Tonight was of...questionable value." Fair and balanced.
-
Hey, cool...Barack Obama's in Kansas City tonight. Good speech by Michelle. She went totally opposite of the stereotype of her, and their two daughters are adorable.
-
Anyone else remember the mass Macarena dancing at the '96 convention? Sweet fucking Jesus. Also, the McCain poll surge stuff has been a little exagerrated... CNN's report that McCain is up to 47% failed to mention every other poll has him lower.
-
Okay....the McCain house thing was funny for a couple of days, but give it a rest already. This is as dumb as the Republicans joking about Al Gore inventing the internet since 2000....except Al Gore lost.... So is the secret to winning an election finding some really dumb wisecrack to drive into the ground?

You mean count miscarriages as part of the infant mortality rate? That runs completely contrary to the science of pregnancy. Those fetuses don't make it for a reason.

Best. Fox News segment. Ever.
