*YAWN* Despite your posturing, you never actually said anything that contradicted me, you merely wasted the last two pages splitting hairs over what constitutes a European name and claiming the amount of the discrimination you originally denied existed actually exists (just in an unknown degree). That's what we like to call a "pointless internet argument" if there every was one. To be honest, I liked you better when you were accusing me of not being American. In other words, maybe you should just drop it.

The whole "Hillary should be the nominee because she'll when the big states" argument is just one more reason to hate the electoral college.

EXACTLY! Well, that was disappointing. I know you have yet to make a convincing argument or support any of your claims with anything resembling evidence or facts but damn..... You must be one hell of a teacher, your 70% black class is lucky to have you. Most of the time I don't have kids in my class who claim they are arguing with me, but are actually proving my point for me.

Maybe someone can explain something to me, as I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around it. Limbaugh and many other conservatives have spent entire careers getting angry at black people. They've been bashing the urban poor for supposedly reproducing just to get a government check, blaming urban strife on them being too lazy to work, speaking out against affirmative action that gives job preferences to non-whites, making fun of the black people for their dialect, referring to biracial people as "Halfrican Americans," and absolving current racism of any responsibility for the current income gap between whites and blacks (again, it's black people's own fault for not "pulling themselves up by their boot-straps"....something those born into wealth, but still considered to be at the top of society, have never had to do). A black person responds in anger to how his people have been treated by our white-dominated society, and Limbaugh and the rest are quick to call him a hate-monger, and completely ignoring what effect their own words may have had on creating or perpetuating white anger against blacks. Even though Barack Obama has said Wright's comments were an isolated incident and that Wright is really better than that, the conservatives are absolutely certain that Wright's anger is the norm, that the man has nothing else to offer, and that Obama is just as guilty as Wright is by association. Is the pure hypocrisy really that obvious, or am I missing something here?

"...but somehow I'm "kind of wrong." Whatever." Because as I said in the last post, despite these trends the vast majority of American born "blacks" still have European first and surnames; especially among boys. http://www.dhmh.state.md.us/publ-rel/html/aababy.htm A single study but you can probably find more data that supports similar trends. Again...you're disagreeing with me without actually disagreeing with me. Your post does nothing to disprove my point that many blacks are singled out sight-unseen because of their names.

I don't want him anywhere near the white house, but Huckabee is pretty damn likable and he's very spot on here. I don't think Wright is bad guy, and he has done a lot of good with his life and helped a lot of people, he just had to live through a time when it was very, very bad to be a black man and you can't really forget treatment like that. Though we differ greatly on our views on the First Amendment, Huckabee continues to be someone I have a lot of respect for.

I don't want to make a big deal from this and drift from the topic further but your actually kind of wrong. Post Civil Rights there was a reasonable size "push" of neo-African and Islamic names, but your actually thinking of the more popular "created names" that can be traced back as far as World War II and continue to be very common. Even than, the overwhelming majority of common "black" names are still mostly British or French in origin regardless of your personal experience, yes, even the more well known stereotyped ones are combinations of European names(say hello to "Leroy Jackson" everyone). You don't have to teach at a majority "African American" school to be familiar with any of these names, not to stereotype but even the most isolated white American can know this from casual sports watching. I'm familiar with the study you referenced and it is a little flawed to say the least; though I don't want to get into that. Obviously there is discrimination of all kinds at the work place(sexism and personal complaints actually toped racisim considerably according to Equal Opportunity Employment) but I think the study you are referencing was simply poor in execution and thought. I again apologize if you found the "American" comment insulting but I was actually sincere and curious. I try to be as vague about myself as possible but I got a chuckle at the private irony of "your real live black people" gesture if not for how over the top and defensive it was. I wll post on this subject no more. Let's review... This time we said almost the exact same thing, and this latest post completely contradicts what you already said on the subject... ...but somehow I'm "kind of wrong." Whatever.

Snuffy, what do you mean? My favorite part was when Jane (Marney?) asked what Obama was before he was a Christian. Because, you know, the fact that his mother raised him agnostic but wanted him to learn about different religions has never been addressed. Nor has the fact that he's never been a Muslim in his life, nor was his father a Muslim. Most of the shit in that thread was pretty easily refuted, but they just keep chugging along with the disinformation.

People want to hear what they want to hear. And logic is sure as hell not gonna get in their way. That crap is why we're in Iraq, why the economy is in the shitter and why education is declining. The sooner people snap out of this line of thinking, the better. I know, but I have a hard time accepting it. Everybody wants politicians to stop bullshitting them and tell it like they really see it, instead of it being sanitized and just say the same old things UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY GET ONE. Look at Paul Tsongas in 1992, John McCain in 2000, or Howard Dean in 2004. They said what they thought the country needed to hear, instead of what people wanted to hear. They were rewarded for it by being shunned by their own party in favor of someone who offered a more sanitized view...only to have the general public complain on election day being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. I am absolutely sick and tired of history repeating itself.

No matter how irrational people can be, I don't understand how Obama can be damned for something not only did he not say, but that he said in about 10 different ways he completely disagreed with.

I listened to Obama's speech on the radio on the way back from out of town this morning. It was immediately followed by a white conservative commentator trying to put words in Obama's mouth, claiming he was now trying to make victims out of middle class whites for saying out-sourcing, stagnant wages, and inadequate access to health care were problems for them. Then there was a caller who said that Obama was being divisive saying white people had a silver spoon in their mouths, despite saying the complete opposite. (Obama alluded to how a lot of the white middle class had a hard time seeing how they have had advantages that many blacks had not, because many had it rough as well, given out-sourcing, stagnant wages, and inadequate access to health care were problems for them.) I swear to God, people only hear what they want to hear.

Sorry, are you even an American? Most "blacks" in this country actually have European/Mostly British first names and surnames. Since the 1970s, there has been a push to give black children names which do not reflect European origins. Perhaps instead of questioning my American-ness, you should try getting to know some real live black people. I am a teacher at a school that is 70% African-American. Almost all of my students either have names that are inspired by non-European origins, or have European names that are uniquely spelled. There was a recent study in which resumes of African Americans were sent out to businesses. Some had European names like John, Fredrerick, etc. Others had names like Kwame, Shaniqua, Martyseon, Vontrell, etc. Those are names that are not uncommon in the African-American community, but completely unheard of among whites. The study showed that the blacks with European sounding names got called for interviews at a far higher rate than the other names.

And now Mccain is endorsed by guys like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Sure Obama's pastor said horrible things but at least they don't want to kill all people that administer abortions like Parsley would want to. While Hagee and Parsley are every bit as ignorant, anti-Semitic, and hate-mongers as Dr. Wright is every bit a racist, anti-Semitic, and a hate-monger, the difference between Obama and McCain is McCain never sat in the pews at the churches of Parsley and Hagee for 20 years. You would figure for as long as Obama sat and listened to Wright's sermons, unless he fell asleep during them he had to have some ideas of what this guy was truly about. I'll call it like I see it. Dr. Wright is a racist, hate-mongering nutjob and is every bit as ignorant and disgusting as a white man burning a cross wearing a white robe. In my opinion, bad-mouthing Hillary Clinton for not suffering as much as black people, or saying 9/11 was America's own fault, really isn't as bad saying that God put you on a crusade to purge the land of inferior races (the reason the Klan burns crosses) and committing acts of terrorism in support of this view. I don't agree with Wright at all on those points and agree with you that it is hate-mongering, but given how completely and utterly bat-shit insane the Klan's point of view is, its a little like comparing a guy who shoplifts at Walmart to a guy who embezzles millions.

I don't know if Hillary's ever been called a "nigger," but I'm pretty sure a lot of right-wing critics have defined her people (liberals or women, take your pick) as non-people in some form or another. He is factually accurate in one regard, though...she's not black nor a man. Can't we all at least agree on that? Barrack's never been called a angry old white bitch..hey, that makes them even! Unity through equality in hate! Thanks for following my more-subtle sarcastic joke with your more sledgehammer-like one. I kind of feel like Albert Brooks if he were opening for Gallagher.

There's a whole lot of white preachers I know of who are anti-American, though the number that are openly anti-black has diminshed considerable in the last 50 years. But I see your point. Those damn black people are constantly getting away with stuff white people can't. Like, for example, black people can get away with being racially profiled by the police, discriminated against in employment for having non-European sounding names, given harsher sentences for the same crimes, and followed around in public shopping centers by over-eager security people. As a white person, I'm tired of them always getting special treatment! Just once I'd like to have my ancestors oppressed for 400 years, then be expected to not hold a grudge. What's a white guy gotta do to get some equality 'round here????
