I'm curious if anyone can envision a scenario in which McCain could win a presidential election. Consider that: -he's quite old -he can't publicly speak worth a crap -he's hated within his own party -he whole-heartedly supports a war that's about as popular as a heart attack -he belongs to the same party as the unpopular incumbent president Thoughts?

When I read it, it was worded exactly like something Rush Limbaugh would say. I don't really think the story about McCain and the lobbyist will have legs. I put it in the campaign trivia category....stuff people who don't like him will always bring up, but ultimately doesn't change anyone's vote.

I don't think she hates America, but I'm also not the one who had my ancestors violently oppressed for 400 years. Imagine how much better America would have been if instead of turning generation after generation of black people into slaves, share-croppers, and janitors, the opportunities had been there for them to be doctors, engineers, and scientists? A woman who says she is finally proud of America is remembering that her people weren't even allowed to participate in the American dream until her lifetime, and now sees we're on the verge of electing an African-American president. You can't fault her for seeing it that way.

In case anyone missed it, Factcheck.org did a fun article showing why Ron Paul is a nutjob. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/wrong_paul.html My favorite line: Ron Paul...as nutty as his supporters. I can't really factually attack your other views since they're either primarily based on your political opinions, or based on information I don't know the origin of (I would have to spend time looking up exactly what campaign promise you are referring to, and then do the factual research behind each promise). What I can point out is the error in this statement, which is easy to track down given its high-profile nature. He wasn't a U.S. senator when the USA PATRIOT Act was passed in 2001. What you are damning him for voting in favor of is the watered-down 2006 reauthorization of the act, which didn't exist yet when ran for office in 2004. He promised he'd vote to repeal the 2001 law, which technically he did by voting to replace it with a milder reauthorization that fixed many of the problems that made him against the 2001 version. Did he break his word? Yes and no. He voted for something that is called the USA PATRIOT Act in 2006, but it isn't the same law with the same flaws he promised to help repeal. He voted to replace the law he claimed he'd repeal with what is technically a new law with the same name. Is it also splitting hairs to cover his ass? Maybe.

Despite his reputation, McCain is the ultimate "let's just keep trying the same old crap until it works" candidate. The only claim he has on changing the government is he wants to do more of it. Mrs. Clinton, by contrast, only seems to be running so she can undo stuff she voted for as a senator. That doesn't speak too highly of her judgement. Obama, by contrast, genuinely wants to try doing something else. Critics want to claim he is too liberal and also say he's too inexperienced, seem to want us to think that that the same old people doing things the same old is somehow going to get us going in the right direction. Not that every idea is good just because it is different, but electing opens up the possibility of LOOKING AT some new things, instead of dismissing every new idea for being contrary to the needs of corporate America (a.k.a. "too liberal").

If they're calling liberalism "Soft Fascism," is it okay to call what Jonah Goldberg, Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc., are doing "Soft McCarthyism"?

"SOFT FASCISM: BECAUSE WE CAN'T CALL THEM 'COMMIES' ANYMORE."

I like to think that a building full of used-car salesmen would be less sleazy than the 04 election.

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released
SuperJerk replied to Human Fly's topic in The WWE Folder
I haven't watched wrestling at all for the last few months, and haven't watched it regularly in about a year. I just learned of this tragedy a few hours ago. I was probably as shocked and appalled as most of you were, since I was also a pretty big Benoit fan when I did watch wrestling. The only way I can rationalize these disurbing events is that, for whatever reason (yes, possibly "roid rage"), Chris Benoit just wasn't himself when he committed these 2 horrible crimes, and that upon realization of what he did, Chris Benoit killed himself out of guilt. I'll admit that watching Chris Benoit wrestle brought me a great deal of enjoyment for several years. I've bought his merchandise, and own a Benoit DVD, t-shirt, and action figure. However, this can't even remotely begin to make up for how bad I feel that a 7 year-old disabled child and his mother lost their lives in an act of senseless violence. -
If I can be serious for a minute... Today is the 12th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing, an act of terrorism that claimed 168 lives, and is the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in our history. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Columbine Massacre. Given Monday's events, I feel it is important that we continue to remember the students and teachers that lost their lives that day. The Oklahoma City Bombing, the Columbine Massacre, and the murders in Virginia earlier this week share a common thread, because they were acts of senseless violence in which the lives of our young were lost. As an educator, I feel an obligation to help our next generation. It is incomprehensible to me that the lives of the young, those with so much potential and the whole world before them, could be snuffed out so recklessly. There is no way to measure the potential that has been wasted by these events. These were not just crimes against our children, but crimes against those who will come after them. We will never know what we really lost on those days, because the futures of those who died can never be written, their potential never fulfilled. Let us also not forget the brave teachers who died both at Columbine High School, and in Virginia. They cared so much about their students that they willingly sacrificed their own lives. Let us not forget the employees at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, who had dedicated their lives to public service, and were killed because of this service. We often hear the words "never again" when tragedies like this happen, but they still happen anyways. I have no new ideas or solutions that would make this a reality. All I can do is continue to serve our children to the best of my ability, and be vigilant in trying to help them reach their own, hopefully better, future.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,255582,00.html As a history major in the 20th century, I think it was impossible to not have read at least one of his books. He was the leading presidential historian of his time, having written so much not just aobut his friends the Kennedys, but FDR and Jackson. I don't think I could ever turn off a C-Span interview with him that I'd stubbled across, or not pick up and look at one of his books I would come across at a book store.

would you consider classism an, oft ignored form of bigotry

Ever noticed how everyone I argue with on this board is 24 years old and younger? That explains a lot. -
Because you are 23 years old and still complaining about Capitalism like an angry 17 year old vegan. Seriouslly, grow up. See, and here I was thinking he sounded like a dumb college kid.

That really wasn't what I was expecting at all. Well, the Izzard character was, but the rest seemed kind of out of left field. I mean...not "gypsy like" but actual freakin' gypsies? Trailer trash drug addict Minnie Driver? Not bad, but like I said, I was expecting something...else.

FOX News planning right-leaning show similar to Daily Show
SuperJerk replied to DerangedHermit's topic in Current Events
Wait...his intials are "B.O."...but sometimes people use those same two letters to mean "body odor"...so they're saying he stinks! BRILLIANT! -
I'm a big fan of Eddie Izzard, so this looks good to me.

I still can't get over that "the Confederacy was a soveriegn state" thing. Man, that's fucked up.

Are 300 and Watchmen similar stories, though? He got away with 300 because the ads promise big action, and I'd still be afraid the studio would want him to go a similar route with Watchmen.

The fact that he can't run for president is probably the reason the right-wing hasn't made a move against him.
