First thing I thought when I saw this thread title: "Czech's going to be all over that one."

    Dick waving, sabre rattling

Jerk, most of the President's powers lie in the realm of domestic/economic policy. Ahem. In other news, I WASN'T ACTUALLY ARGUING WITH YOU.

Siskel and Ebert hate on Proestants

Pentacostals & Baptists are technically Protestants the way Fords and Chevys are technically cars. In some parts of the country, that's most of the Protestants you're going to find. And if you want to talk about casual, I seriously doubt I've ever met more than a dozen or so Catholics that go to church more than 4 or 5 times a year. To the whack-jobs I grew up with, they're the devout ones and everyone else are lazy believers.

    Smallville Season 6 thread

I'm sure somoene's already ointed this out before, but I was going through my Smallville DVDs and noticed the Daily Planet headline that Lionel was reading the first episode: QUEEN INDUSTRIES CEO MISSING; PRESUMED DEAD Heh.

Excuse me for being serious, but I was raised Pentacostal/Assemblies of God, who are Protestants. John Ashcroft regularly spoke at my church when I was a child. People "spoke in tongues" with clockwork regularity. I've been to a Jimmy Swaggart "crusade" in my life. I've watched films at church that make "Left Behind" look like happy-go-lucky entertainment. Our annual Christmas play depicted what Christmas would be like once the Anti-Christ rose to power. At 5 years old, I was told I was going to hell unless I accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Saviour. So, yeah, I'd say a lot of Protestants can be a little less harmless than you're envisioning.

This is confusing, but while the president is the elected leader and head of the executive branch, but the Ayatollah is the commander-in-chief and supreme leader of the country. I don't know if that constitutes "little actual power," but it does make him a subordinate to an even crazier guy than him.

    Donald Trump destroys Rosie O'Donnell

I could care less if Selleck did NRA commercials, but being a shill for the National Rifle Association and owning a licenced gun (especially if you're a professional bodyguard and need one to do your job) aren't the same thing. And what does it matter if she's a lesbian? I'm more put off by the fact that she's obnoxious and not funny. I have no idea what Rosie O'Donnell said about Trump, but Trump's comments were high school-caliber insults, at best. Basically it amounted to "You're fat and ugly, and I make more money than you, ha-ha."

    4,000 dead Americans

You did have a choice. Last time I checked there wasn't any draft. Stop bitching and do your fucking job. I cant stand people who sign up to be the Govt's bitch when they know full well what the fuck they are getting themselves into. The system is flawed but your job is to do as told. The government has a responcibility to provide them with the tools they need to do the job the government sent them over there to do.

I'm curious to know if anyone REALLY thinks that James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell are just "kind of" religious.

    1. You mean WASPs don't run the country? 2. Gene Siskel died 7 years ago, so who cares?

I live in Missouri. I've met, like, probably 10 Jews in my entire life. Adam Sandler's Chanukah Song was a real eye-opener for me.

More evidence that I'm a typical person over 30: I have no idea what anyone is talking about. I really need to find a pop culture board populated by people my own age or something.

Considering that (1) almost the entire point of Christianity is that it is something you can choose to join without having to be born into (your are redeemed by the "blood of Christ"), and (2) any religious tests for office are explicitedly forbidden by our Constitution, that piece seems to be advocating something that is both un-Christian and illegal. This Debbie Schlussel sounds like a typical shit-for-brains bigot. edit: After some quick research on teh internets, turns out that Debbie is Jewish. That's a significant detail since she's trying to decree who is a Christian and who is not.And she really, really, really, really seems to hate Muslims. A lot. edit2: After some slightly less quick and vomit-inducing research on her blog, turns out Debbie thinks Sam Brownback and George Bush aren't conservative enough. I think the term "Coulter-level Whack Job" applies here. edit3: Apparently she's also a regularly featured conservative commentator on Fox News.

Yeah, her decline occurred between the time she filmed Herbie and the time it came out, IIRC.

    Time's Person of the Year

I think they were looking more at long-term influence. Stalin's influence lasted barely half a century. Though you could correctly argue the world would be very different if WW2 had never happened, Hitler's direct influence ended in 1945. Einstein's influence on science will outlive us all.

Opposition to the Guiliani candidacy also highlights how out of the mainstream the party's core supporters are. Go ahead, have a bitter primary battle over abortion and gay civil unions instead of talking about national security issues and the economy, and see how far your party gets in a general election. How good an image will the party have after the hero of 9/11 gets called a "baby killer" by the very voters he's trying to appeal to? Behold, the Republican Civil War is upon us. This is a no-loose situation for the other 70% of the country. Either the Republicans reject his candidacy and look like nothing but a bunch of reactionaries who want to use the government to impose their narrow view of morality on the rest of us (thereby pushing themselves into the status of a fringe party), or Guiliani pulls the party towards the center and the theocratic elements within the party loose influence. The party hasn't had to make these kinds of hard ideological choices since Reagan's candidacy, so no Republican presidential nominee has had to draw clear lines on these issues in over a generation. Dubya was able to side-step the abortion issue altogether by not having to talk about it. Now, someone has to not only talk about what they'd do about it, but then run against a woman in the general election.

Not quite the same. The Mr. Show skits were making fun of white people singing "black" music. This is basically just a ridicules concept set to music.
