Child Arrested After Opening Holiday Gift Early

You know what's funny? A bunch of 20-something internet nerds giving each other parenting advice. And spare me this "you know what's wrong with this generation" crap. I grew up in the 80s and we were WORSE than kids nowadays.

Don't tell me to "look beyond the surface" while simulaneously offering your sorry excuse for analysis. You're trying to have it both ways. If you remove McCain and Guiliani, Huckabee's the frontrunner, not Romney. Huckabee's positions fall in line with what Republican primary voters want to hear, plus he has a great human interest story. He's also a genuinely nice guy, whereas Romney comes off like some slick northeasterner who also happens to support (in their minds) the legalized murder of unborn babies. Who do you really think John C. Biblethumper's going to pull the lever for? You really have no dea why I'm backing Bayh, do you? Use your brain for a second here...you're the one that's getting all emotionally worked up over people with no chance of carrying a single red state, not me. Bayh has the best chance of getting 270 electoral votes worth of states in the blue. Moderate ex-governor of a red state wth foriegn policy experience who talks tough on national defense > whatever liberal masturbation fantasy the peaceniks and the tree-huggers decide is flavor of the month. Sure, Obama's a swell guy and gives a rousing speech, but that's not going to cut it when you're electing the commander-in-chief in the post 9/11 world. After 8 years of Bush, the party's base will be willing to overlook some of Bayh's more conservative positions and accept him because he's more acceptable to them than ANYONE the GOP has to offer. And if a guy has four or five HUGE things working against him, and you only mention something completely irrelevant as a possible spoiler, can you blame me for thinking you don't know what you are talking about?

Why do you have to lie because you don't like my conclusion about something completely unrelated? Can anyone find a quote of this? "encouraged the conditions that would help lead to" ≠ "started...with his bare hands" Only an idiot would not be able to see the difference. You need to do a lot more research on Romney if you think that's the only thing that could hold him back.

*sigh* I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE MEDIA AND THE POLLS. No, Humphrey wouldn't have one the nomination, but at the time he was the only big name floating about OVER A FULL YEAR BEFORE A SINGLE VOTE WOULD BE CAST. Yes, Humphrey was already a 2-time loser and had terminal cancer. In reality, he had no chance. THAT'S NOT THE POINT. The point was that any "big names" floating out there as the top draw in a crowded field isn't a good indication of who the frontrunner will be. History says that the Democratic frontrunner will NOT be the person the media says in the popular favorite over a year before the election. That was true in all of the elections I cited. Bayh's a good candidate and is abundantly qualified. I might change my tune if he gets shown up in the debates, but as of now, he still has a very good chance of running away with this thing. Why do you have to lie because you don't like my conclusion about something completely unrelated?

    Fuck Graduate School

So, I got an e-mail Friday that had some basic info about the summer practicum I have to for my Master's program in Special Education. I'm getting 6 hours of credit for this experience. The e-mail includes the following paragraph: So...5 1/2 hours a day. 5 days a week. For 8 weeks. Plus onsight hours to complete assignments. That's the equivalent of 12 credit hours during a normal semester? The hell? Here's the best part: 6 weeks of the practicum will be me teaching summer school at an urban alternative school. UMKC

    Las Vegas

I swear I'm not asking this to be a dick. Can someone please explain why I'd want to watch this show? It looks both interesting and bad at the saem time. I'm mildly curious, and want to know why I should give it a chance.

I think Bob was trying out his brand of ironic sarcasm again. Not as funny as the running Lance Armstrong gag.

When The Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts

But that's the point. It was advertised as being about how Columbine occurred and why there aren't school shootings in other nations, and then switched halfway into some crazy rant about gun control that didn't solve the issue at hand. Or was Moore trying to say that Columbine occurred not because the two kids were legitimate psychopaths but because of racism via lame-ass flash cartoon? I'm still trying to figure out the message of the film, because it starts off so damn well...but then Moore goes on some tear-jerking tangent about some 6-year-old that got shot because a classmate brought a gun to school, and it all goes fucking nuts until Charlton Heston walks out of his interview due to Moore just being a prick. I think Moore's final point was that the news media makes people edgy and paranoid, and more likely to be violent. That point was somewhat negated by his earlier point that our entertainment media doesn't make people violent, but its our violent history. That point is negated by his comparisons to Germany's violent history and how there society isn't very violent, but they have gun control. That point about gun control was negated by his pointing out that Canada's gun control isn't any different than ours, but they have a different news media. In short, Moore spends the entire film confusing the issue without ever comng to any real conclusion, but winning praise for being topical and irreverent.

Hugo Chavez wins reelection in Venezuela

My comment was more of a criticism of pro-socialist dogma than the individual reforms particular to this instance. Economic reform, like democracy, should probably come from within a country and not be imposed, in order for it to work.

I describe the new Blue Beetle this way: This is the comic book I wanted to grow up to create myself when I was a kid.

When The Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts

The media outlets that cover the music industry are largely ignored by pretty much anyone over 25. Just one of the many joys of getting older.

Hugo Chavez wins reelection in Venezuela

Yeah, because Western style capitalism that was imposed was doing so much better for them. I'm sure Nicaragua can attest to that. And socialism has done wonders for...no where.

    Campaign 2008

Humphrey was the early favorite, before the voting actually started. He wasn't an official candidate until Carter had the nomination sewn up. I mean, you also had guys like Scoop Jackson and Lloyd Bentsen, but they're campaigns didn't go anywhere. Humphrey was the most popular name floating around in 74 and 75 before anyone knew who Carter was, i.e. like Hillary is now, Cuomo was in 92, and Hart was in 88. The unofficial "anti-Carter" candidate was Jerry Brown.

How do you feel about Iraq?

I hated to start another Iraq thread, but I wanted to get a feel for where people around here stood on this issue, since its not the simple choice of "I support the war" or "I oppose the war" the media makes it out to be.

From the "Please, God, No" file... Hillary Clinton discussing presidential bid LOLZ I guess its just a question of who the anti-Hillary faction (i.e. people who can see outside the confines of liberal group-think) decides to rally around. Obama would be the obvious choice, but I can't wrap my head around both of them running. Hillary Clinton thinks she's Bobby Kennedy, but she's actually Ted.

    The Official "52" Thread

Here is the rundown: The Guardians nervously talk about sector 3601 and the "52" The Green Lantern rings are afraid of the Blue Beetle and begin to act up around him. See IC#6 and Blue Beetle #1 The "M" thingie on Blue Beetle's chest forms a 52 To elaborate...The new Blue Beetle was fighting Guy Gardner in the first issue of "Blue Beetle". The new Beetle had no idea why they were fighting, nor did he know why he couldn't remember the last year of his life. LF, the story you're missing really hasn't been told yet, but will in the coming issues of "Blue Beetle" and "52."

I'm not so sure since I moved last year, but I'm thinking I live in a Time-Warner area.

    HDTV

I don't know if they look as good as digital cable, but they look better than analogue cable. The reason I wn't go back to cable (and Rant already once explained why they do this) is because the lower-tier cable channels aren't digital. I wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that I like to watch the Sci-Fi Channel and Comedy Central, and those looked super-snowy. I signed a 2 year contract when I got my DirecTV HD, so I'm stuck until they get their satelitte's launched anyways. I basically let them screw me because they lied and said I'd be able to get the broadcast networks through the East or West Coast affiliates, but then everyone but my local Fox affiliate declined my waiver. The antennae they put on my house to pick up local affiliates only gets about 4 local HD channels.

The OAO 2006 US Elections Thread

Webb said, "That's between me and my boy." LET'S FUCKING EXPEL HIM FROM CONGRESS RIGHT NOW!!!!! I don't think either man was being really rude. Bush was trying to make nice (albeit to the point that he was almost being pushy), and Webb didn't want to talk about his son. The only person I can't honestly say was being a total dick about it was George Will and some other media operative that want to spin this into a big deal, who weren't even there. I'm not sure who started the version of the story that Webb said he wanted to "slug" Bush.

    HDTV

Im not wrong here though. He said "well it is a CRT TV which is the best kind of HDTV". Generally, projection sets, even if they technically are CRTs, are not considered the best kind of HDTV due to the odd viewing angles and such. Regular flat screen CRT HDTVs are still considered the best for picture quality (most notably better black color than any other option) despite the fact that they are about 50 times larger and 1/3 to 1/2 cheaper or more for comparitive options. "Mole..really..do you know the difference between CRT and Projection..it doesnt seem like it." He may have been talking about the wrong kind of CRT, but you were wrong for insisting that the TV in question was not a CRT. I'm curious about this as well.
