    This Week in Baseball 4/9 - 4/15

Jason Smith was bunting, the Tigers knew he was bunting, the entire crowd at Rogers Centre knew he was bunting -- and he still managed a bunt single. Sweet.

Thank God for MLB Extra Innings. Looks like both of them are going to start the 10th. Neither of them had 100 pitches through 9 innings. EDIT: Nope, Bonderman was pulled after 9, and Rodney is in. Yum yum.

    Getting Dental Work Sucks

I was, and I'm finally getting to the end of all these procedures. When I was 20, I had to make an emergency visit to the dentist to have a molar removed due to an infected nerve -- believe me, there is no pain quite like that. Three years later, I finally got dental insurance through my new job (never had it as a kid), and since then, I've had another molar removed, as well as two wisdom teeth, and about 7 or 8 fillings (one of which replaced another that had fallen out, thanks to shoddy work by my previous dentist -- nothing like walking around for three weeks with a hole in your mouth, waiting to have it filled). In August, I'm having two more fillings, and that's it for now. With my last round of fillings, I wasn't able to be frozen enough to not feel anything, and I could actually feel my tooth being drilled open. Not pleasant AT ALL. One of the wisdom teeth was just removed last Wednesday. Some advice: Never schedule a dental procedure right before a major holiday.

    NFL 2007 Season Schedules announced

Wow. Buffalo actually gets a Monday night game, in Buffalo no less. You act like football on Monday night is still a special thing. ESPN still has their old Sunday Night Football schedule, only moved to Mondays.

    TSM Fantasy Baseball 2007

My starters are getting rocked this week. Santana and Perez only threw seven innings combined.

Lots of people have Kurt Angle. No one has Kurt Vonnegut.

    TSM Death Pool - 2007

No, he died late last year and everyone had until New Year's Eve to make a substitution.

The road to the Stanley Cup begins.

WTF is with the new graphics on CBC? Why don't they show the power play timer continuously anymore?

2-0!!! Someone forgot to send Pittsburgh the memo that the playoffs have started. This could easily be a 4-0 game with the Pens' complete lack of intensity.

Holy shit, Pittsburgh looks completely overmatched early. Fleury, specifically, looks petrified. 1-0 Sens.

Win total is meaningless in the sense that it's the thing the goalie has the least control over. It's just not a good indicator of a goalie's skill level. It's like wins in baseball -- you can be the best pitcher in the league and still end up with a record of 14-13 because your offence can't score any runs. Or, you can be a mediocre pitcher and still win 20 because your team gives you a six-run lead every time out. My point was more that yes, Brodeur has great stats, and yes, he does deserve the Vezina Trophy, but not because he set the wins record. That's silly. If he was 12th in the league in GAA and SV%, no one would even be considering him for the Vezina, wins record or not.

I don't blame them. Three Canadian teams, and all they get on the first Saturday is a 3:00 game (which I'll be at)? It's a joke. The Sens appear to have agreed to a 4-year $14M deal with Chris Phillips, hot on the heels of re-signing Anton Volchenkov.

Seattle's certainly looking like they haven't played in a week.

    The Old School questions thread

i'm going to go against what I believe to be the popular opinion and say no. I can't think of one point in the feud where it would have made more sense to have Piper win the title. Plus, Piper didn't need it, and having Hogan as champ made much more sense for marketing purposes.

What's the matter, Al? Don't you have goosebumps anymore? They've become hives.

That would be about the worst reason to give it to any goalie. He started 78 games! If his team's any good, of course he'll set the wins record! Dan Cloutier had three straight 30-win seasons, and he was terrible! Andrew Raycroft won 37 games this season! Win total is a meaningless stat! If he'd played more, I'd give the Vezina to Backstrom. But, he only played half the season, so I'd say it's a toss-up between Brodeur and Luongo, with Brodeur getting it because his numbers are very slightly better.

The whole Graham James saga is extremely disturbing. It's a shame that so many continue to turn a blind eye to what was going on.

A-Rod's got another homer. If he'd ever have seven games like this in the playoffs, they'd be making plans for an A-Rod statue in Monument Park.

Reason #256 why I love HD: I get to clearly hear an umpire tell Buddy Bell, "You don't know SHIT!!" 4-0 Jays on the rare bases-clearing ground-rule double by Lyle Overbay. A fan reached over the fence and grabbed the ball as it was about to carom off the corner, but the home plate umpire ruled that the runner on first would have scored.

    This Week in Baseball 4/9 - 4/15

Looking at the schedule, I can see why. The Indians would have to play the Angels on a Thursday and then travel to Oakland for a Friday game, which I believe is against the MLB scheduling rules.

The Jays' Opening Day game tonight reminds me of college homecoming, when you'd schedule the worst opponent you could to give you the best shot at getting a win. In this case, the Royals.
