The OAO Raw thread for 07.05.04

    This is surreal.

    Most Dastardly Heel Acts

Look no further than the KINGS of the dastardly heel act, the Four Horsemen. Their parking lot mugging of Dusty Rhodes (which they filmed just for the hell of it) was classic.

The FCC needs to step in...

But they ARE being covered. The nominations and the nominees' speeches, which are the important parts, are being shown live in their entirety. Just because networks don't feel the need to show a tired old speech from Joe Republican praising Bush to the skies doesn't mean they aren't being covered. Generally, when looking for newsworthy events, I tend to look for ones that can't be described as "irrelevant."

Exactly how are a bunch of same-old, same-old speeches news?

    Sens trade Lalime to Blues

Something to think about, but Osgood has won the Cup. Lalime, well... where's that beachball picture? True, but that had a lot to do with the team that was in front of him, as far as Osgood goes. Yep. Osgood had only slightly more to do with the Red Wings winning the Cup than did the equipment manager.

    Election Day

I have to echo your sentiments 110% there. McGuinty is a wretched swine. I really don't get this province's obsession with the Libs. Seriously. I realize that they think Mike Harris = The Devil and therefore means that all Conservatives are as well, but this is just ridiculous. I don't think it's an obsession at all. Ontarians, especially big-city Ontarians, just refuse to vote for a party that has someone like Randy White as its outer face, whether that image be real or perceived. The Conservatives have a lot of work to do in getting the dinosaurs out of their party and moderating their image.

Geez, get some perspective. All of those things you mentioned, combined, are barely a drop in the bucket. Give me balanced budgets and the occasional spending bobble anyday over yearly eleven-figure deficits and social conservatism. Just don't get sick. Otherwise you will die while waiting 6 months for the operation due to Martin's budget cuts. Looks like someone swallowed the provincial propaganda whole. A cursory look at expenditure data will tell you that health expenditures in constant dollars have never decreased in the last fifteen years, and increased substantially in the last five or so.

I'm expected to vote for a party that will unilaterally repeal our freedoms, or for a party that will bankrupt the country? No thanks.

    Election Day

I went Liberal, because my candidate is a good one, and she needs some help. Liberals leading in 100 ridings, vs. 42 Conservative. Wow. Was anyone else stoked when the Marxist-Leninists were leading in one riding?

    Raptors to hire Sam Mitchell

That, in a nutshell, is why the Raptors will never amount to much. Is there even ONE big thinker in the front office?

    Election Day

Exaggeration. It's $900 for anyome making over $200K, down to nothing for anyone under $20K. And similar premiums already exist in Alberta and British Columbia. That's a bit of a logical leap. If I was in his shoes, I would have done the same thing -- delist some secondary services so core services continue to be delivered without interruption. When you're dealing with double the deficit you were expecting, you need to make some hard choices. That's laughable. Look at Mr. Klein in Alberta; he's a REAL example of trying to privatize health care. Of course, the health care system is in such bad shape right now that no amount of money is going to fix it anyway. New ideas need to be injected into the debate, and there's no one around right now with fresh ideas. Right, because clean drinking water has NOTHING to do with good health.

Adscam was a media creation. The stuff they did was standard government practice -- ANY government -- to get money from where it was to where it needed to go. Everyone blew it up into farcical proportions because they don't understand how financial mechanisms work in government, due to the ridiculous restrictions placed on the flow of money from one department to another.

    Election Day

It's a shame the campaign isn't a week longer. The Conservatives could completely self-destruct by then. As it is, they'll probably just gasp to the finish line.

    Bertuzzi Charged

Yet Dany Heatley is still free even though he killed Dan Snyder. Accidentally. And it's not like that case wasn't investigated thoroughly.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longisla...-span-headlines Overreacting a bit, aren't we? I agree that the instructions are unfair as stated. They'll fix this in a few days, I'm sure.

What's right and wrong in today's society?

Embryos are humans so yeah I can definitely see why people would find it morally unacceptable. So are criminals, last I checked.

What's right and wrong in today's society?

http://www.texlife.org/docs/smith.html There was no "debunking" done here at all. STATS simply raised the valid issue of why other research was being ignored by the media. There was no substantive dismissal of the potential of embryonic research. Smith seemed more concerned with ethical questions (no surprise, given his background). No substantive refuting of the benefits of ESCR here either, and even less of an attempt made. Just a statement that ESCR is unethical, and that's pretty much it. About what I'd expect from a pro-life group. I find it amusing that opponents of ESCR say that you can be for abortion but against stem-cell research, while completely ignoring the other side of the coin -- that you can be against abortion but for stem-cell research.

This one kills me: The death penalty 65 28 Medical research using stem cells obtained from human embryos 54 37 Yeah, go ahead and kill this guy...but let's think a minute about touching those embryos. After all, they might only cure a deadly disease.
