The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

They will never give the Hart trophy to someone whose team misses the playoffs. Luongo's had a great season, and should definitely get Vezina consideration, but the Hart is out of the question. My finalists at this point would be St. Louis, Sundin, and Naslund. So let me get this straight. Jose Theodore, through his great goaltending, sneaks a much better team than the Florida Panthers are into the 2002 playoffs by 2 points and gets the Hart trophy as a result. So if Luongo brings his Florida team, who are much worse than the Canadien squad, very close to a playoff spot that is not good enough even for a nomination? I'm not saying he's not good enough for a nomination. I'm saying his team isn't good enough to get him a nomination. If the Panthers can sneak into the playoffs, then I'd probably give him the trophy on the spot.

I'm hoping for: 1. Ottawa 2. Philadelphia 3. Tampa Bay 4. Toronto 5. Boston 6. New Jersey 7. Montreal 8. N.Y. Islanders with the playoffs following like this: Ottawa d. N.Y. Islanders Montreal d. Philadelphia Tampa Bay d. New Jersey Toronto d. Boston Ottawa d. Montreal Toronto d. Tampa Bay Conference final: Ottawa vs. Toronto Even if Ottawa were to lose to Montreal, a Toronto/Montreal East final would rock as well.

Teams hated on by the National Media.

I haven't heard anyone that thinks OU is that good this year. Most everyone I read has them as a bubble team.

    The Official MLB Offseason Topic

Jayson Stark's latest article was so fucking fantastic that I had to post a link to it: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2004/c...yson&id=1748433 My favourite quotes: "The Yankees getting A-Rod," Todd Jones says, "that's like IBM trying to enter an eighth-grade science project." "Boy, that's some kind of World Series drought the Yankees have going," quips Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella. "How long has it been since they won one? I thought it was two years, but it's actually been three. Three years. That's like 30 to anybody else."

This could be the most entertaining matchup of the first round. I would pay to see every game of that series.

    Sean O'Haire?

Oh, come ON. Did he have ten minutes screen time combined in that time? WWE was more the guilty party in that failure.

Well, it looks very much like the eight playoff teams in the East are set (sorry, Sabres fans)...it's going to be REALLY interesting to see how they order themselves over the next month and a half. With Montreal's win over New Jersey tonight, there are eight points separating first (Ottawa, Philadelphia) from seventh (Montreal).

And he shouldn't want Stajan going. No way is Gonchar worth that much, with what the Caps have (not) been getting in their fire sale so far.

Yeah, it was that. Sens should've won easily, but Burke had an awesome night. I think he stopped 40 shots. Havlat may get suspended for Saturday's game against the Sabres after a vicious elbow. Tampa is looking VERY strong right now. No more jokes about wanting to finishing 6th if the top 2 wasn't possible.

    Mysterious Disappearance of Howard Dean

Eh, the huge fucking image was a placeholder until I could get home and resize it. I generally don't like them much myself.
  17. It's a conservative publication, but I certainly wouldn't classify it as a propaganda mag...at least, not like moveon.org and its even more radical ilk. As for who cites its stuff...why would anyone but a conservative writer cite a conservative source? EDIT: Fixed the site name.

For those who can get it, watch tonight's Philadelphia/Ottawa game. It should go a very long way toward determining whether Philly has what it takes to last in the playoffs this year. The Flyers have only one victory over a team which is currently playoff-bound in the last six weeks and they got thrashed by the Senators in their only other meeting this year. Following up, the Flyers are only 11-11-4-3 against playoff teams this season -- 5-9-3-3 in their last 20 -- and 13 of their last 18 games are against current playoff teams.

The ONE and Only College Basketball...

Whoever said that is dead wrong. Past history means jack shit to the committee. Hell, Syracuse is on the bubble, and they're the defending champs.

Whenever the words "Rick Bowness era" are used, you can rest assured it will have a bad start, bad middle, and bad finish. I think Bowness might have pictures of Gretz somewhere.

    The Passion of the Christ

But that's my whole point. Gibson made a movie that only a relatively narrow audience can appreciate and understand the significance of. Movie reviewers critiquing it as a movie have to point that out as a major flaw, and they're correct to do so. As a spiritual experience, I'm sure it's very powerful. As a movie, however, it's very flawed.

    The Passion of the Christ

I would imagine there are one or two worshippers of other religions that may not be altogether familiar with the story of Christ.

The 10 Ten Canceled TV Shows

You know, I don't think there was ever a reason given for Sports Night getting cancelled...it just didn't show up on the schedule for the following season. I don't even remember there being an announcement. I think Sorkin wasn't too eager to do another season, though, given how ABC was dicking the show around and he was getting into The West Wing. Sports Night and The Job (one that would've made my list) are the reasons I don't watch ABC anymore, except for sports.

    MLB 2004 Predictions

Maddux will make that entire rotation better just by being there. They were already ahead of the Astros before signing him (Prior and Wood are that much better than Oswalt and Miller). He's going to make Clement and Zambrano into quality guys, even more than they were. Except add Derrek Lee -- a big upgrade over Choi/Simon/Karros. And Todd Walker's no real slouch either. Plus they'll have Aramis Ramirez for a full season. Meanwhile, the Astros did nothing except get older.
