I do this every day. Great time waster. I'll have to go back and post some of the better ones. I think I aced the RBs over 10K yards quiz. Off topic: Countries of the World and Periodic Table are fun non-sports ones.

More small-conference tournament bids: East Tennessee State (23-10, 14-6 Atlantic Sun, RPI 115) won the Atlantic Sun Conference title. The Moccasins advanced to the tournament for the first time since 2004 as a member of the Southern Conference, which they were forced to leave when they dropped football. The Big South title went to Radford (21-11, 15-3 Big South, RPI 132), who routed VMI in the final. This will be the first trip in 11 years for the Highlanders (I'M ROBBIE!). And, in a double overtime thriller, the fourth-seeded Morehead State Eagles (19-15, 12-6 OVC, RPI 142) nipped defending champion Austin Peay by a basket to win the Ohio Valley title. Morehead State hasn't been to the NCAAs in a quarter century.

    2009 World Baseball Classic

It's really not that bad, there's just nothing memorable about it. All the things that made it state of the art 20 years ago -- the retractable roof, the JumboTron -- have been done elsewhere. There used to be a problem with the turf, but the installation of FieldTurf solved that. That game was fucking awesome to watch live. The place was absolutely rocking in the 9th inning like I don't think I've ever seen it, even during the glory years. Watching the national team in Canada, no matter what the sport or the event, brings out a passion in the fans that's just fun to be a part of. Oh, and Joey Votto can come play for the Jays whenever he's able. JOEY! JOEY! JOEY!

    2009 World Baseball Classic

Is there anyone I'll recognize tomorrow?
  11. VI: It's probably remembered better than it should be because pretty much all the faces went over in the big matches and the main event was better than it had any right to be. It's not a great show from a workrate perspective, but the atmosphere was awesome, probably since they finally went back to a big stadium after two years at the very mediocre venue of Trump Plaza. And full credit to Vince for doing something that had never been done on such a large scale, putting his two top babyfaces against each other on the biggest show of the year. One thing I liked from watching the SNME DVD was DiBiase reminding me that one year later, the Roberts-DiBiase feud was FINALLY coming to a close at WMVI, after starting at WMV with DiBiase stealing Damien. VII: Unquestionably Vince's biggest failure up to that point. He tried to sell out the Coliseum and failed miserably, being forced to move it to the LA Sports Arena. For all the criticism the Iraqi angle gets -- and believe me, every single bit of it was deserved -- Hogan-Slaughter was actually a decent match. Al hit it on the head when he said the basic angle of heel Slaughter vs Hogan was a good one without all the other crap. Hogan and Slaughter were such consummate pros that I have no doubt they could have pulled off an epic angle without resorting to all that. Obviously this show is remembered best for the Savage-Liz reunification, and for good reason, as it's one of the WWF's best and most memorable moments ever. I still get choked up watching the end of that match. The match itself was a classic, easily Warrior's best ever. Aside from that, not much to remember, aside from the Hart Foundation's last match, a good one against the Nasty Boys. Perfect-Bossman was very disappointing; I will always believe the Bossman should have gone over to win the title there. VIII: Back to the big stadium show, although it seemed the crowd wasn't nearly as charged up as they were in the Silverdome and the SkyDome. This was basically a two-match show with Flair-Savage and Piper-Hart, but they were both easily all-time top 5 WM matches to that point (along with, IMHO, Savage-Steamboat, Savage-Hogan and Savage-Warrior). Tons of filler, but some memorable moments along the way, with UT squashing Jake the Snake, two EPIC post-match interviews from Savage and Flair, and Warrior's return saving what had been a pretty awful match between Sid and Hogan. I don't think I've ever watched this show all the way through, I always skip to the two big matches. IX: This has to be the worst WM to this point, which is a shame because the Las Vegas venue was an outstanding idea. Really, the less said, the better. X: And we go from the very worst to one of the very best, even if it is another two-match show. You've got the greatest WM opener ever in Bret-Owen. You've got the pioneering ladder match featuring just a blow-away effort by Shawn Michaels, who basically announced his presence (and his greatness) to the wrestling world with this match. And there's the awesome moment at the end of the show, where Bret Hart, the conquering hero, is atop the shoulders of the entire babyface roster while his brother Owen looks on in disgust and jealousy. Throw in a really fun FCA match between Randy Savage (in his last great WWF moment) and Crush, and the always-awesome MSG crowd, and you've got a really good show. Right up there with VIII as the second-best Mania to this point.

Heel Characters That You Agreed With?

I'd say Bret Hart, but he was supposed to be a face to me, so that doesn't work. First example for me would probably be Savage before WM5. Any idiot could see that Hogan WAS a huge gloryhound who was after Elizabeth.

  16. WM: History has clearly not been kind to this show. Production values are in the Dark Ages compared to today, and most of the matches are pretty meh. I mean, Santana, Steamboat and Bundy all wrestled in what were basically squash matches. That would never fly today. But, it accomplished what it was supposed to accomplish, and the main event is still pretty fun to watch. WM2: Interesting idea, poor execution. I agree with Al that the Long Island portion was really bad. I've never seen the complete version, though, so it may be more watchable than the clipped Coliseum release. WMIII: Still my favourite WM ever, and the best-looking of the early Manias. Everything was pretty much perfect from start to finish. Savage-Steamboat still holds up today as *****. Hogan-Andre is still an incredible spectacle, even if the match was poor by workrate standards (it was never supposed to be good with Andre in the shape he was in). I think this is where Gorilla and Jesse really hit their stride as an announcing team, too. Just a totally fun show. WMIV: Sooooooo loooooong. I knew when I picked it up at the video store in 1988 and saw it was a double cassette that the show wasn't going to be fun to watch. It still isn't. Hogan-Andre had been done three times up to that point, and seeing it again just exposed how bad their match was -- there was none of the specialness that WM3 had, or even that The Main Event had. Savage-DiBiase was good, but they took far too long to tell the story, and by the time they got to the climax there was not enough time left for them to go out and have a REALLY good match. WMV: The definition of a one-match show, but that match delivered and then some. You may have noticed that I'm a pretty huge Savage fan and that I was completely into this angle from start to finish, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that I have good memories of this show, just because of the main event. Not much else of note -- Warrior-Rude was pretty bad, Demos-Powers+Fuji was meh, Andre-Jake was horrible, Perfect-Owen was good but way too short. Count me among those who liked the overlong Piper's Pit. And I'm still baffled as to why they went back to Trump Plaza for a second straight year (I'm sure it was money, but it was such a non-descript venue that I'm disappointed it's held two Manias).

Any TSMers in the Ft. Lauderdale/Orlando area?

It's like any other big city, some neighbourhoods are worse than others. I've gone down there twice, and the first time we stayed right downtown near the port and AA Arena where the Heat play. We found that area REALLY sketchy. Second time we stayed in Sunrise (western suburb of Ft. Lauderdale), across from the Sawgrass Mills shopping centre, and that was nice.
