    The Critic

*orgasms* I'm getting a DVD player this week. I must own that. I have nearly every episode on tape, but still... You guys have listed most of the great quotes I can remember at the moment. However, what may have been my favorite moment ever on the show was when Duke fired Jay and Jay set out to win another Pulitzer prize. When he finally did, it showed Duke watching on TV, and he simply muttered, "Well, I guess the jig is up!" and leapt out the window. I laughed my ass off for a good five minutes after that one.
  2. The local indy fed, New Midwest Wrestling, has some matches up on ClickWrestle now. This fed's great. I have been to all the shows and I have trained with them in the past, and I will be starting again in the next 2 weeks. The matches that are available were NOT filmed by NMW, but rather a guy who goes by the name of Crimefighter. I believe he does commentary during the matches, and his high-ass voice gets kind of grating, but he's only a fan, not our official commentator. I honestly believe that NMW has some of the best in-ring action of any US indy fed, but the show that these matches were taken from was not one of the better ones. It was a free show on July 4th and, due to the 100 degree weather and amount of matches scheduled (it was a tournament), most only go 3-4 minutes and aren't anything special. Normally, the average NMW match is at least 10-15 minutes and is between 2 and 4 stars. Some have even reached 5 stars, IMO. Hopefully those matches will go up soon. Oh, and another thing... Due to the remote location of the show, the heat, and the fact that it was a holiday, we had a shitty turnout. Usually we get around 300 people at a show. Hell, we even have a fancy lighting rig and video screen. But I digress... Check this stuff out if you'd like. You can even see me in the crowd... I'm right by the ring next to a rather large man named Robert. I haven't viewed the videos since I only have a 56k connection, but I believe I was wearing a black NMW shirt and camouflage pants, and I probably had my gold fake Oakleys on for most of the show. Here's a pic of me from back in May so you'll know who to look for. I shouldn't be hard to find. http://home.insightbb.com/~ckimball/upload...attandmandy.jpg Anyway, here's the link to the matches: http://www.clickwrestle.com/modules.php?na...download&cid=35 If you like what you see, check out www.newmidwest.com and the forums and give us some feedback! If anyone lives in the central Illinois area (which I doubt), come out to a show sometime, too. EDIT: They added Tom Arson vs. Toga Steve. I'm not sure where Crimefighter's camera was positioned, but Tom comes over to where I'm sitting and talks to me during and after that match (then again, there's a slight chance it was the battle royal, can't remember) so you should deifnitely see me on camera.

    New Year's Eve plans

My prospects aren't looking too rosey either. I have a choice between going to my friend Jennifer's house and hanging out with 10 or so people, but that's looking doubtful since my ex-girlfriend/best friend (whom I've been through more with in the past year than I have been with anyone else in my 19 years) will be present at that little shindig, and we haven't talked in a month (after being together every day for over a year) with the exception of a "Merry Christmas" e-mail I sent her. We had been growing apart, and she hurt me more than I could ever explain... And ever since I hooked up with her former best friend at a party around mid-November, Mandy's reaction has been a mixture of extreme jealousy combined with extreme rage. I'd like to see her again, but fuck, I refuse to let anything ruin my New Year's Eve. I will likely go to Ryan's house and hang with the usual group of 7 or 8 people, getting drunk and acting like retards. God knows there's nothing going on in Springfield.

    Hollywood 48 Hour Diet

I'm not fat, actually. I have some excess water weight I'd like to shed, and the holidays kind of added to that- Well, at least I look and feel bloated, but the scale says I'm only at 127. Oh well, it doesn't matter much now.

    Government announces ban on ephedra

I saw this reported on ESPNews. I don't know if it's the right decision, or even if there is one. I know a lot of people who used the stuff and had no problems whatsoever. It's mostly those who abuse the drug and/or have existing (possibly undiagnosed) heart problems that end up getting hurt. One thing I do know is that there will be a lot of sad kids who will no longer have a cheap way to manufacture methamphetamines...

    Alaska Wrestling

Just out of curiousity... Why are you and your girlfriend moving to Alaska? Other than a great job opportunity or the fact that family lives there, I cannot imagine one reason to move there, ever.

    Ska Punk genre

I love Less Than Jake, and I finally got to see them live at the Warped Tour in 2001. I don't listen to a lot of ska-type music, but I reommend anything Sublime for music with ska/punk type tendencies.

    Cris Kirkwood (Meat Puppets)

Wow... This is shocking. I'll admit that I am not a huge fan of the Meat Puppets, but what I have heard of their music (basically the songs Nirvana covered and a few others), I really like. This incident is just surreal. I mean, Christ... The guy's not very big to begin with. Couldn't there have been some other way to subdue him rather than shooting him in the damn stomach?

Steve Austin on Smackdown in Bagdad

I believe they DID say he was out of WWE forever, not just the Raw brand, but maybe that was Foley who they said that to. They could always just go with the old "He bought a ticket" claim. Of course, that brings up the question of how he got past not only WWE security but military personnel in order to make it backstage and out to the ring, but then I'm really reading too deeply into WWE logic here. I won't complain... It was a mostly boring (and I generally find all WWE shows good) holiday filler show that very few people watched, and I (as well as the troops out there) enjoyed seeing one of my all time favorite wrestlers make a token guest appearance. I would like to state, however, that I think this "unauthorized" appearance could be integrated into Bischoff's argument for why Austin should not return when they meet with the "board of directors" on Monday's Raw.

    Marijuana Lounge

I've smoked weed for almost 4 years. My first time was the night before Easter of 2000, a few months before I turned 16. I've loved it since I started, but I don't smoke enarly as much anymore. I've taken to drinking and I do that more often since it's cheaper. Also, when I smoke, I get tired and anti-social unless the other people I'm around are high as well, which is the opposite of what happens when I get drunk. Still, when the setting and time is right, nothing beats some good ganja. I love getting high and turning on some trippy lights, just chilling and listening to music... It's like you can hear each individual instrument/voice in the song separately, with perfect clarity. It's beautiful. In that same vein, I also enjoy playing my guitar and writing songs while high. Other things I love to do while high.... Playing video games- I feel like I used to as a child where I would be PSYCHED about a new game and LOVE every second of the experience to the point where there's nothing better. I also perform even further above my already high level of skill when I'm baked. Ah, the joys of carrying on a non-stop conversation about silly shit, staring your friend directly in the eye the entire time, while beating them flawlessly at Soul Calibur. Oh, and old school games are the best while high- NES especially. Sex- The pleasure is heightened ten-fold. Nuff said. And then there is of course what I'm doing right now- Smoking a bowl and watching lucha libre. Hell yeah. The only bad note I have in my experiences with smoking is that I got arrested for the first time a couple months ago due to the guy I was with (whom I barely knew, and that was my biggest mistake) getting pulled over for expired plates, and the cops noticed his open beer case in the back seat. He had only had 2 beers and was fine to drive, but nonetheless, that gave them a reason to search us. They found around a gram in my cigarette box and my gorgeous new glass bowl from Toronto. Needless to say, I lost the bowl and I go to court on Monday. I'll share some of my funnier stories later when I have more time. Right now I am going to smoke more and watch the last 45 minutes of lucha. Great topic, Dames... I didn't have any idea that you smoked.

    Molson XXX

So how much is it? I rarely ever buy beer, but this sounds good. If too expensive to buy a lot of, I could still use it to chase my vodka with. Speaking of that... *Hits bowl, cracks open bottle, commences with the intoxication process*

Did you ever miss your chance?

What high school did you attend (and when)? I only ask because I went to Chatham Glenwood, which was/is a top football team in the IHSA's 4A class. I wouldn't say I missed an opportunity. I played basketball from 5th- 10th grade and football from 7th-9th. I was never very good at either, but I just loved playing. I didn't have the body either. Throughout much of high school, I was 5'8" and hovered around the 165-170 mark in (fat) weight. These days, I am going after the one athletic dream I still have- always have and always will most likely. I've wanted to be a wrestler for a long time, and I even planned on moving to Maryland to train with MCW once I turned 18 (this was 2 1/2 years ago, at 17). However, as luck would have it, an organization called New Midwest Wrestling opened up right in my hometown of Springfield! They opened for training in December 2001. I went there to take part in their free tryout. I couldn't sleep the night before, but I was pumped when I climbed into the ring for the first time. I took some back bumps, ran the ropes, and did simple drills. Unfortunately, since I was under 18, I would need parental consent and to have my mom sign a waiver. She wouldn't. I finally started in October 2002 a few months after my 18th birthday, but I reaggravated a back injury and ran out of money (I had no job) and had to leave. I've still been to every show and know all the guys very well. Now, I will FINALLY be able to go back full time in a week or 2. I'm in better shape now (125 pounds, very little fat) but I need to add muscle. My main New Year's Resolution (incidentally, the title of the next NMW show) is to have my first match in 2004. Wish me luck... And Dama, good luck to you man. I believe in you...

Kurt Angle's Full Time Career Over

This is the saddest wrestling news (excluding deaths) that has come along in a very long time if it's true. Angle's one of the few truly great wrestlers left in WWE at this time, and losing him will have (and has in his absences already) a huge detrimental effect on the in-ring product. However, his health is what's important. Let's just hope he's not in as bad of a condition as has been suggested here.

    In Game Holiday Bonuses

I've heard of several games on newer systems (ever since the DC debuted the internal clock) having special little things on Christmas, Halloween, and other holidays. However, the only ones I had seen were on Sonic Adventure 2 and Animal Crossing. Today, I popped in my rented copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and much to my surprise (and delight), Raphael, who was my character of choice, appeared on the loading screen wearing a Santa Claus hat! He kept it on during the entire time I played, in fact. I think little touches like this are great, and I totally marked out for seeing that. What games have you guys played that included things like this in them?

The "Games You Just Bought" Thread

I just went to Game Crazy and the selection of games I had wanted has been depleted since last time. Also, most of the games I really wanted were at least $10, and I decided that since I only had $170 remaining ($100 of which pays for wrestling) I would only spend around $20 rather than the previously planned $50. I still picked up the following 9 games for $23.56 (mostly sports and fighting): WWF Royal Rumble (Genesis) Wolverine: Adamantium Rage (Genesis) Mortal Kombat (Genesis- with box) Street Fighter II: Championship Edition (Genesis) TMNT: Tournament Fighters (Genesis) College Slam (Genesis) World Series Baseball '95 (Genesis- with box) NBA Live '98 (PlayStation) Madden 64 (Nintendo 64) I have very few Genesis games, so I'm trying to build up a collection. I have MK already for SNES, but the Genesis version is supposedly superior. The Live and Madden games I got are my favorite incarnations for those systems, repsectively. I picked up the TMNT and Wolverine games because I have played and enjoyed both, and I needed some superhero/comic/cartoon games. You also can't go wrong with Street Fighter. College Slam was 99 cents and I loved the old NBA Jam style games. These should keep me busy for a while.

    TSM Christmas Party

I couldn't sleep, so now I'm sipping some egg nog and smoking a bowl. I'll probably watch some of Half Baked since it's on in 15 minutes. Par-tay!
  18. Hey guys. Back in the day, say maybe 8-10 years ago, I was a hardcore comic book fan. I had a decent sized collection- as much as I could con my family into buying and afford with my pittance of an allowance, at least- along with a great assorment of trading cards, often in complete sets; action figures, etc. I was more of a Marvel guy than a D.C. or indy fan, but I had a lot of random stuff from different series since often my grandma would pick me up an issue or 2 of whatever looked cool when she went to the grocery store on Saturday mornings. The only series I recall collecting on a regular basis were things like X-Men (and all its various spinoffs, at least at one point or another- I had every issue of X-Men from #1 to Jean and Scott's wedding, and the entire Phalanx Covenant) and Batman, but I had several issues from many different series such asSuper-Man, Spider-Man, and others that I can't remember at the moment. Recently, I've been on a nostalgia kick- Not just as far as comics go, but in everything. The string of great superhero movies that have been released over the last few years such asSpider-Man, Daredevil, and the X-Men flicks have piqued my interest. I'm really wanting to get back into collecting. I know my grandma has my old action figures and maybe my trading cards, but I'm not sure about the actual books or what condition they might be in if they are still around. I had a few hundred, so I'm really hoping they weren't tossed. They'd probably be very expensive to replace now, and I really want to go back and look through them all. I already told you some of the series I collected. Some of my favorite story arcs were (and forgive me if I fuck up the names a bit, it's been a while) were the Phalanx Covenant that crossed over into nearly every Marvel (or at least X-Men related) series (These issues had a holographic strip along the front covers), the series which I can't remember the name of that had holographic cards with character images on the front cover, which led up to Magneto stripping the adamantium from Wolverine's bones, the DC Zero Hour saga, the Death and Return of Superman, the Fall of the Dark Knight in the Batman books that saw Bane breaking Bruce's back and all culminated in Batman #500, and some weird futuristic alternate universe story about a time where Charles Xavier was dead and Magneto led the X-Men, which led to all the X-Men book titles being altered temporarily. I'd love to go back and read those, but as I said, I don't know if my grandma still has them around. I wonder how much it would cost to replace them if need be, but it's probably in the hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars range which would not be possible right now. I was just wondering if any of you are going through something similar to what I am, if you would like to share opinions on any of the aforementioned series/story arcs/etc., if you could tell me if it would be possible to feasibly replace any of those if I need to, and then maybe link me to someplace where I could catch up on things. Also, if you have any recommendations for current series or compilations that I could purchase to get back into the swing of things, that'd be great. Thanks a lot for reading, and thanks in advance for any help.

    so..um... Merry Christmas

Thanks, SpiderPoet. I won't be on much longer tonight- I'm going to play a round or 2 of Mario Kart and then hit the sack, seeing as how I didn't get more than 2 hours of sleep last night at most- but I will add you to my AIM buddy list and contact you next time I see you online.

    so..um... Merry Christmas

I did the same thing. I was raised Christian and attended a Christian school, but somewhere along the line, I lost my faith. I still believed, I just stopped practicing the religion. It seemed (and still does seem) like I only turn(ed) to God when I was in need, which was all this year mostly. I had only been to church twice this year- Once when I walked the 7 miles up there in the snowy February cold in a depressed haze after the love of my life dumped me, just seeking some guidance; the other time being on Easter. I needed something to restore my faith, and tonight at least put me on the right path.

I plan to go with Option 3- Get drunk and spend the day with my family, probably eating way too much, playing video games, and watching Smackdown.

    Best and Worst.

That's bullshit. There are rumors like that for all wrestling games, it seems. The only game to have an inferno match was ECW Anarchy Rulz. I have played tons of Royal Rumble on the DC, and there are only 2 modes- exhibition and the Royal Rumble itself. There's nothing at all to unlock in the game except Vince and Shane McMahon as secret characters.

    Best and Worst.

Actually, I would have said Thunder was better due to the character selection, the animated wrestler taunts, and the ability to switch affiliations between nWo Hollywood/Wolfpac/WCW/Raven's Flock, but what kills it for me is the tie-up meter where you can mash buttons and literally drain your opponent's entire energy bar in 10 seconds. And to think, I actually bought that game brand new at full price...

    Best and Worst.

Let's see... I own the following (not including ROMs): Super NES: WCW SuperBrawl Sega Genesis: WWF Royal Rumble Nintendo 64: WWF WarZone WWF Attitude WWF WrestleMania 2000 WWF No Mercy WCW vs. nWo: World Tour WCW/nWo Revenge WCW Nitro WCW Mayhem ECW Hardcore Revolution PlayStation: WCW Thunder WWF Smackdown Dreamcast: WWF Royal Rumble Giant Gram 2000 Fire Pro Wrestling D I think that's everything. After very little deliberation, here are my picks. Best Game: Fire Pro Wrestling D (Runner-Up: WWF No Mercy) Worst Game: WCW Thunder (Runner Up:WCW Nitro)

Ah, so I see you took my advice. You'd better take some time out from those to play Mario Kart and Fire Pro with me on Thursday, though.
