Batista wins the Royal Rumble January 30, 2005 By Anthony Cali FRESNO, CA – Their game plan was simple. No matter what it took, Triple H, Ric Flair and Dave Batista wanted to make sure that the Royal Rumble was an all-Evolution night. For better or worse, their plan came true. In the second-to-last match of the evening, Triple H retained his World Heavyweight Championship over Randy Orton. Then, approximately 60-minutes later, Batista won the 30-man Royal Rumble contest to receive a World Title opportunity at WrestleMania 21. Naturally, some fans are already considering Batista’s victory as the demise for Evolution, but if you ask the 6-foot-5, 317-pounder, he’ll tell you the exact opposite. “The way I look at it, it’s positive for Evolution,” Batista said from the locker room of the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. “I think it’s a good thing, but it all depends on how the other two members look at it. I think it’s positive to have the title in the hands of any Evolution member. And now we have that, no matter what. So that’s got to be good.” Batista’s win didn’t come easy. After manhandling a slew of Superstars upon entering, the enforcer of Evolution had his hands full with SmackDown! Superstar John Cena. While trying to eliminate the United States Champion, both he and Cena went over the top-rope and hit the arena floor at the same time. While referees from SmackDown! and Raw disagreed over who the rightful winner really was, Mr. McMahon came down to ringside and ordered the match to begin again. Moments later, Batista hurled Cena over the top, and claimed the victory. “It was unbelievable,” Batista said with a grin, “I would have rather have had a stronger victory, but Cena is a hell of a competitor. After I eliminated him for the second time, I didn’t know how to feel. I actually wasn’t expecting it at all, and I was a little shaken up by all of the controversy as to who landed first” Despite the swarm of questions and controversy surrounding Batista’s upcoming title match, there’s no denying that Evolution’s animal picked up the biggest victory of his almost three-year WWE career. “This is definitely the biggest win of my career,” Batista added. “I’m a little overwhelmed, and I don’t really know how to feel about it, especially knowing that I’m going to WrestleMania to get a match for the World Title. Edge gets the opportunity of a lifetime next week January 31, 2005 By Anthony Cali SAN JOSE, CA – For months , Edge has been complaining about not receiving his due. He claims to have been “screwed” over and over again, by Shawn Michaels, the WWE fans, Eric Bischoff, and anybody else he can blame. Next week, it will be time for him to either put up or shut up. Following his huge victory over HBK at the Royal Rumble, and a stunning Rumble performance that lasted 40 minutes, and saw him throw five other Superstars over the top rope, Bischoff gave Edge the title opportunity he so strongly feels he deserves. Next week in Japan, Edge will face Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. "I think Bischoff realized that not only was I the leader of the Raw brand in the Royal Rumble,” Edge told WWE.com after hearing of the news, “but I think he realized that by me being one of the first seven entrants in the Royal Rumble, lasting as long as I did, and throwing out guys like Eddie Guerrero, Ric Flair, Rey Mysterio and Shelton Benjamin, that I am World Heavyweight Championship material, and that I deserve a title match. I’ve had opportunities involving other people, and every time I’ve been screwed out of the opportunity. But now I have Triple H one-on-one, and it doesn’t get any better than that.” Of course the matches Edge refers to are his triple threat match against Triple H and Chris Benoit, where both he and the Crippler were declared the winner, and his second World Title opportunity at New Year’s Revolution, where he was eliminated from the contest after receiving a superkick by the guest referee, Shawn Michaels. Next week, there will be no extra opponents, no special referees, and no excuses. At least that’s what Edge is counting on. "I’m going to need eyes in the back of my head,” Edge admitted. “I’m going to have to watch out for Ric Flair. I’m going to have to watch out for Dave Batista. But it’s like I’ve always said, I’m a lone wolf. I always find ways to get it done, and next week I’ll do just that. I will finally fulfill my destiny of becoming the World Heavyweight Champion.” If Edge is able to make the most of his opportunity next week in Japan by defeating Triple H for the World Title, he promises to be a fighting champion. The Total Disaster

I know I'm just getting my hopes up for nothing, but I want Edge to win the title next week. Sadly, the way they booked that in at the last second -- hey, wouldn't it have been nice for Edge to have looked happy? Or been seen thanking Bischoff? Or anything? -- leaves little hope to be found. Alas. On the other hand, though, a Jericho/Benoit Submissions Match! For a Japanese audience! If there's a way for the WWE to screw this up, I don't want them to figure it out!

When are we suppose to leave Iraq again?

Well, Jericho won their last encounter so I'm expecting Benoit to get his job back. Oh and I'd love to see Benoit turn heel. I always liked him better that way.

I'm not saying Edge is the greatest or anything, but he's been miles better than his stale babyface routine which flopped horribly. Plus he has this great angle of finally trying to chase down the world title. If it wasn't for the HHH / Batista stuff, I wouldn't have minded seeing Orton / Edge (supposing Edge won the Rumble) for the world title with either Randy beating him to finally shut Edge's trap or Edge winning the world title at WM to make the boyhood dream come true.
