Why not, you don't think that Jay Reso could beat the shit out of Gregory Helms? I wouldn't have him do it to a big guy, but a minor squash over Hurricane would be perfectly believable.
-
Yeah, give it about three months; I guarantee you Schmidt will be in the Top 3.
-
36 wasn't a big deal, but 39? That seems like a little much. He's probably only got about three years at his peak before his body starts wearing down. Sure, they'll have time to make money off of him, but when you compare him to someone like Orton, and realize that Orton will be that age at WM 35, it kind of makes you think.
-
Actually, that could really help him, just to get a quick clean win like that. Have him talk about how pissed he is about losing to Batista, and how he wants to get his frustrations out. Seeing as how Venis and Hurricane are about the only choices for him to wrestle, it would probably have to be a Heat match, but then again, that might actually let more people see it, depending on the buyrate. Anyway, if he's not on the card, I think the pre-PPV Heat would be the perfect time to give Christian a win clean with the Unprettier. A three minute squash of Hurricane would be about perfect.

No, I'm guessing JR didn't notice that Edge was trying to use the sharpshooter, although to be fair I didn't either. It looked like shit, and you really couldn't tell what he was doing.
-
Oh, that's right. I didn't even mention the extra price. Try charging $50 for Great American Bash or something, and see how many buys you get. That would never fly for any PPV except WM.
-
No, but when the average buyrate is something like 300,000 to 350,000 buys and a weak card with no main event gets 575,000, that shows that the Wrestlemania name's good for about 250,000 buys on its own. At that rate, even if you figure that Batista was good for an extra 200,000 buys, Cena's first title win got 125,000 buys, and the incredibly strong undercard got 100,000 buys, the WM name is still the primary drawing point at WM 21.
-
Yeah, and despite Mania doing a "terrible, disappointing, number" that year, it was still was the second most bought PPV that year behind the Rumble. In fact, no PPV other than WM has surpassed the WM XIX buyrate since. The point is that while there will be fluctuations within the buyrate based on how good the card is, the WM name will be a drawing point, first and foremost, and will guarantee a great buyrate in relation to the other PPVs.

Edited for clarity. Jason Schmidt's the best pitcher in baseball, and Mike Lowell's still going to turn it around and have a great year. Even at three for two, this deal looks one-sided to me.

The "Raw brand won-loss record" thread had the record through a few weeks ago, when he was 3-12. Although, actually looking back at the thread, it got updated more recently than I thought, so Christian's record on Raw is actually 3-13 this year, as the only match that wasn't on there was his loss to Batista.

Is it just me or does that look like the most boring card ever. There's basically one intriguing match (Eddie/Rey) on the whole card. Obviously, it's not full yet, but unless they get the draft done in time to move someone over, I don't see it getting much better.

Jason White's proven time and time again that he can't play against a good defense. He proved it against LSU, he proved it against Texas, and then he proved it emphatically against USC. Trust me, if Jason White ever did somehow play in the NFL, it would be like the Orange Bowl every day. Now, the Arena Football League, on the other hand, could be a completely different story. The rules differences (fewer players on the field, forward motion allowed, etc.) simulate a talent advantage for the offense. Thus, White would once again be allowed to fling away at open receivers and throw TDs at will. Honestly, if I was an AFL GM, I'd make Jason White the top pick in the draft, and mortgage the rest of my team to get him if need be, but in the NFL, White would be nothing but a miserable failure.

My interesting angle/character idea
iggymcfly replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in General Wrestling
That's terrible. You're basically suggesting turning a botched spot into a worked shoot, and hoping for the heat to last ten years? I don't like it at all. -
Meet the champ.

Edited to make the story actually interesting. You are gay...............not that there is anything wrong with that. Don't be a hompohobe. Just because you like to fuck other men in the ass doesn't mean you're gay.

They had a couple chances to salvage him, most recently with the Chief Morley gimmick. However, by returning him to the Val Venis gimmick multiple times which was so stale that no one could stand it four years ago, they've effectively killed him dead. The thing is that at this point, even a character change would seem meaningless since we'd know that he'd end up with he stupid Val Venis character again in three months anyway. He would actually be a great case for TNA, because they usually don't refer to the previous gimmicks whatsoever. If he just came in and started wrestling as Sean Morley, he might do all right, but on Raw, he's more stale than HHH and La Resistance combined. I really think he needs to be released.

I bet if we could see pictures of what these people looked like, we'd have true comedy. They sound like they're the absolute stereotypical rednecks that you'd imagine would be in such a situation.

Worst thread bump ever.

I'd say that the current era pretty much started in late 2002 for Raw, and I can see it being similar over that time period, but that's about it. Shit, Smackdown already transitioned from the "good worker" era to the "jobbers main eventing" era around GAB last year.
-
I'm going to try to give RRR a mercy killing here by getting back on topic. Anyway, I think the main event actually served its purpose fine tonight. They let Batista overcome the odds to help him get over, they let HHH get a little bit of heat going into the PPV, and I still think that Christian got some rub tonight just by being involved. I mean, he couldn't really just jump right into the main event scene hen he's 4-14 on the year and hasn't won a match clean in recent memory (since he was relegated to Heat duty if I was going to guess). However, he did a ton to get his character over tonight, and he actually got more offense in the Batista match than he usually does when he's facing some lower-midcarder for no particular reason. Really, if they were going to feed someone to Batista, Christain was about perfect, because he's over enough that Batista getting the win will mean something to the fans, but he's also still in the position that the loss won't hurt him whatsoever. I thought they managed a pretty entertaining show tonight, and while Backlash won't do anywhere near as well as Mania, I still think they'll put up a fairly decent number.
-
Yeah, people who watch the show at the bar might have been looking forward to seeing Austin, but I guarantee that hardly anyone actually plunked down $50 for that reason. I'd say the drawing power of the card probably went something like this: Wrestlemania name- As evidenced by WM XIX and WM XX, just about any card will draw huge buys as long as it's Mania. Batista/HHH- The match that most people paid to see. For all the talk about Cena, I've heard a lot more hype about Batista from people who aren't all that into wrestling. JBL/Cena- Well supposedly Cena has a lot of fans, so maybe they wanted to see him win. I'm sure that at least a few people out of the sea of 12 yr. olds got their parents to pay for the show. Angle/HBK- Smarks do probably buy PPVs more than the marks, so I'm sure this was a drawing point as well. Orton/Taker- This was another match that a lot of people wanted to see, and I'm sure that a lot of people who ordered the show mainly for other matches wouldn't have ordered it if this wasn't there as well. If I didn't know that Orton was injured, I would have thought he was going over Taker for sure. Piper's Pit- I can kind of see this as an auxilliary draw, but I really don't think it was very crucial to the success of the PPV.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the same interview we've had like 5 threads on already? I'm pretty sure that they just keep replaying it.

I swear, if you just change the word "Cardinals" to "Falcons", those are the Atlanta jerseys. I was wondering why they looked so damn familiar. And while it's obviously a little early to make predictions, I think the Cardinals are winning the division next year. Warner's still a legitimately solid starter (despite what the media would have you think), and would have taken the Giants to the playoffs last year if he hadn't got benched for Eli Manning. Antrel Rolle is an NFL-ready corner, and could easily win Rookie of the Year next year. Meanwhile, JJ Arrington is the absolute steal of the draft, as he's got more talent in his little toe than Cedric Benson has in his whole body. With that solid O-line and the weak division, the Cards look like they might even be the de-facto team that comes out of nowhere, goes 11-5, and then makes it to the conference championship.

Wrestlers You Thought Would Never Turn Face/Heel
iggymcfly replied to ChrisMWaters's topic in General Wrestling
Actually, back in 2000, I never thought Benoit would turn face. He's got a ton of natural heel charisma, but he always just seems way too dry and boring as a face. I still think it defies logic that someone who's clearly better disposed to be a heel has been playing a face for the last four years.
