    This Week In Baseball

Fuck yeah! Moises Alou's the man! I'm just watching on Gamecast because it's not televised, but anyway, he hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th to give the Giants a 4-2 lead. If they hold on and the Padres don't come back, SF will move within 5 games of first in the NL West tonight. Go Giants!

Oh god. I just realized I'm going to get stuck watching Notre Dame blow out Washington while Georgia Tech plays their biggest game in five years. Regional coverage sucks.

    This Week In Baseball

God, I just wish there was some way that the Red Sox and Yankees could both miss the playoffs. I'm finding that at this point, I can't decide which one I hate more so my rooting interest is extremely lacking. Actually, that's not true. The fact is that despite being a died-in-the-wool Yankee hater for life, I've actually grown to hate the Red Sox more. Seeing the highlights of the Yankees/Orioles game tonight, I actually started to smile at the thought of the Red Sox missing the playoffs. I felt so dirty; it was like getting a boner over your sister or something.

Is Bischoff winning the title in two weeks?

I honestly hadn't even considered the possibility of that happening. I was also thinking of this as another throwaway Cena match which I still think it is. However, I think a more appropriate poll question might have been: "If Bischoff wins the World Title, will you ever watch Raw again?" The response might have been even more overwhelmingly no.

Edited for accuracy. Don't feel bad though. The Cougs probably won't have it any better.

Would you be able to pass a drug test right now?

I'm actually in the yes column right now. It's funny, if you just hang out with people who aren't smoking weed, you just kind of stop doing it.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 4

Hey Bored, I know you do a lot with this contest, but could we see standings by conference or maybe the BCS numbers for everybody? I just can't get enough of the contest, and I'd really like to have a better idea where I stand.

    This Week In Baseball

You know it's funny; even though I know Bonds used steroids, I know his records are tainted because of it, and I wouldn't vote him a first ballot HOFer for just that reason, something still draws me in about thr guy. I think it's a combination of his "fuck the media" personality and the fact that he really can hit the ball tremendously well even if you negate the steroid influence. At this point, the only thing that has me remotely interested in this baseball season is the off-chance that the Giants will catch the Padres and win the NL West. The idea of Bonds coming in and lifting a shitty team to the playoffs just sounds awesome. I've gotten to the point where I hate the Red Sox just as much as the Yankees, and I strongly dislike the Indians as well. In fact, I'd say that I dislike just about every potential playoff team right now. It seems impossible for the Giants to catch the Padres right now, but it really shouldn't be. Yes, they're 11 games under .500, but they're only 5.5 back and they still have 4 games against the Padres. I figure they're going to need to sweep the Padres to have a chance, and then go about 8-3 in they're remaning games. I don't know if Bonds will give them enough of a lift to do that, but if he does, I really think they could be dangerous in the playoffs. Even though they'd have the worst record of any playoff team in MLB history, they'd be believing they could beat anyone, and they'd be the best player in baseball better than they were for most of the summer. The idea of Barry Bonds taking a 80-84 Giants team to the World Series sounds about 100 times more interesting than Yankees/Red Sox part 87.

    Does anyone else

That's the one thing I don't like about college football. The slow pace. The games are 3 1/2 hours long. They need to chance the rule that the clock stops on every first down. Make it the final three minutes of each half. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Whoa whoa. College football moves way faster than the NFL. Sure, they might stop the clock a little bit more during the game, but they don't have TV timeouts after punts, kickoffs, and all the other ridiculous excuses that the networks use to cram in as many commercials as humanly possible. Also, the play clock's a huge factor. NFL teams routinely run the play clock all the way down, and it's 20 seconds longer. That means that there's nearly twice as much time where they sit around and fondle each other's balls instead of playing football. The fact that some people don't notice this amazes me. And I think the complaint about blowouts is completely invalid. Sure, if you only follow one team, you might see less exciting games for them, but if you're a fan of football in general, there are tons of great games. Notre Dame/Michigan State and Miami/Clemson were both more entertaining than any NFL game last weekend. Both featured big comebacks in front of a raucous crowd, culminating in real overtimes, where both offenses and defenses get to decide the game, not kickers and the flip of a coin. Virginia/Syracuse, Oregon/Fresno State, TCU/Utah, and UTEP/Houston were all exciting televised games that would make you stop what you were doing to watch the ending. In fact, I'd say that the way the NFL contract's set up, it's actually easier to find a close, exciting NCAA game then it is to find one find one from the NFL.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that you're giving the voters too much credit. Texas is ranked #2 and they're not going to drop unless they lose a game or look really bad in a win. I was never saying they'd deserve the spot; I was just saying that the voters are going to leave them there unless they lose. Oh, and for the record, Georgia Tech is way better than Clemson and Boston College, and Auburn is way better than Vanderbilt. And yes, every one of those teams is better than Oklahoma.

UCLA shouldn't pat themselves on the back too much for beating OU. Honestly, I don't think the Sooners would finish in the Top 3 in the MAC right now. Collegefootballnews.com ranks all 119 teams and they have Oklahoma at #54 this week. I will agree that the Pac-Ten's gotten better though. Cal and ASU are both for real, and UO, WSU, and UCLA all look to be solid teams that could easily make the leap to being legitimate Top 25 squads.

This Week in College Football 9/15 - 9/17

Given USC's skill and Texas's schedule, I really can't imagine how either one of them could lose during the regular season. The way I see it, everyone else is completely screwed. Even if someone like Florida, LSU, or Va. Tech has a magical season and ends up as the best team in the country, there's just no way that they'll make it to the Rose Bowl. On the bright side, if we have another year with a major conference undefeated getting screwed out of their chance at a championship, maybe we'll see a little motion on a playoff. You'd think that under enough pressure, the university presidents will have to at least consider a change.

Iggy's week 2 college football rankings

OK, there not in the Top 25 now, but they were before Miami beat them, and even so, I'd honestly call them #26 right now. Also, I made that post when I was completely blacked out, so the fact that I was as coherent as I was deserves some credit.
  14. That's right; it's only 10:32 PM PST, but Iggy's college football rankings are already out! I bet you can't stand the excitement. (previous week's ranking in parenthesis) 1. USC 2-0 (1) 2. Texas 3-0 (2) 3. Florida 3-0 (4) 4. LSU 1-0 (3) 5. Virginia Tech 3-0 (5) 6. Florida State 3-0 (7) 7. Michigan State 3-0 (NR) 8. Louisville 2-0 (17) 9. Georgia 3-0 (6) 10. Georgia Tech 3-0 (10) 11. Miami (1-1) (15) 12. Ohio State (2-1) (11) 13. Tennessee (1-1) (9) 14. Notre Dame (2-1) (8) 15. Michigan (2-1) (15) 16. Iowa State (2-0) (16) 17. Wisconsin 3-0 (12) 18. California 3-0 (13) 19. Arizona State 2-1 (18) 20. Alabama 3-0 (NR) 21. Purdue 2-0 (19) 22. Minnesota 3-0 (22) 23. Texas Tech 2-0 (24) 24. Auburn 2-1 (25) 25. West Virginia (NR) OK, since I know you were all super-worried about it, it looks like I might be going out after all, as one I my friends just called about a tight house party. Also, for the record, I did the Top 19 when I was still almot completely sober, and I only got drunk while I was waiting for the Purdue game to go final, so these ratings are completely credible and I stick by them absolutely. If you have any compliments, complaints, or general comments, please feel free to type your opinion.

I think they'd be better off using Iggy's rankings to decide who should play in the Rose Bowl. Honestly, they would. Sure, I don't have any credibility or nationwide recognition, but that doesn't mean I'm not better at ranking football teams. They'd just have to make sure to pay me a decent salary so that when Mack Brown comes to my house with $50,000 in December, I wouldn't be tempted to compromise my integrity.

Iggy's week 2 college football rankings

Fuck that. Ohio State's best win was a (relatively) close game over San Diego State. Miami beat a real Top 25 team on the road which gives them more credit, and makes them closer to a real team. OSU looks like real squad, and when they get to the point where they're best game wasn't a loss, maybe they'll deserve to be in the Top Ten. However, for now, I can't see any reason to put them ahead of teams like MSU or GT.

Iggy's week 2 college football rankings

All right, I haven't got a call back from Chris yet, so I'll answer the early questions on the rankings. As for Michigan State, they've accomplished something. They beat a real team on the road, and as such, they've done something more significant than any seven teams in the country at this point. I mean really, who would you put ahead of them right now? Georgia looked good against a Boise State team that turned out to be vastly overrated, before barely beating a mediocre South Carolina team. Georgia Tech beat Auburn (a win less impressive than ND on the road) before having two outings that were far from impressive against UNC and UConn. Louisville looked great for one game against OSU, but the looked terrible against UK, and I don't see how you can rate them ahead of a team who's been impressive for all three games, and has accomplished more than the Cardinals this season. I know that a win over ND doesn't satisfy the typical criteria for a 20 spot leap, but if you want to argue, I want to see at least one team that's actually worthy of being ahead of them at this point. Now, as for Wisconsin, it's not so much that they played bad and deservd to drop five spots this week. However, there are two major facts available: 1. Michigan State, Louisville, and Miami all accomplished something more significant than anything Wisconsin has done all year. 2. Wisconsin really hasn't accomplished much all year. They were coasting to a Top 12 ranking based on the fact that they looked impressive thus far. Therefore, when they look unimpressive against North Carolina, they have no reason to maintain their ranking. If they had a big win, (like GT against Auburn), they wouldn't drop five spots, but since they didn't, there's really no reason to keep them so high after that poor of a performance.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 3

Bah, still not in the Top Ten. Oh well, I guess my win really wasn't all that impressive at 10-9. However, since I base most of my analysis on how teams actually play (rather than that gay preseason bullshit), I'm only going to get better as the year goes on. Trust me, it will be two weeks at the most before I crack the Top Ten (or get jobbed out for no reason) as I guaran-fucking-tee I will be 4-1.

The One And Only Unforgiven Thread

Just a couple thoughts looking at the card. 1) Did anyone else notice how every single match has to be face/heel now? I really don't like that. It just shows a lack of creativity. One of the things from the Attitude Era that they need to bring back is the idea that heels can face heels and faces can go against faces at least occasionally. 2) Despite all the flaws in the product right now, if Angle won the title from Cena, it would probably be enough to get me to tune in, at least for a little bit. Of course when Bischoff comes out for Angle's opening promo, and starts talking Cena, Cena, Cena, Cena, Cena, I'll probably just tune right out again.

    Recommend alcoholic beverages

I drank a bloody mary once. It was the nastiest thing I ever tasted in my life. It basically tasted like hot sauce mixed with salt. You really couldn't taste anything that remotely tasted like it should be in a drink.

    The O.C.

I was kind of tired, so I actually ended up taking a nap during the OC last week, considering how disappointed I was in the first episode of the season. However, from the sounds of things, it looks like they might be doing a little better job, so I'll make sure to give the OC another try next week.

This Week in College Football 9/15 - 9/17

Dama, this is the guy who went back and edited his post from last week's college football thread just so he wouldn't have to take down his OU avatar for the year. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He did? Man, that goes in the Pathetic Hall of Fame. That takes a special kind of pathetic. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Quiet you two. However, if Oklahoma doesn't beat UCLA I'll change my avatar to umm... Notre Dame, there. I promise this time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Notre Dame sounds pretty random. That's no fun. How about a picture of Maurice Drew scoring a TD with a caption of something like "Drew 23-16 (or whatever the final score is) says UCLA just whipped your ass."

    On Full House

Well, the name of the show was Full House. If Jesse and Becky lived in their own empty spacious house, the title wouldn't really fit.

    HBK is a little unhappy

And have Iggy and co fill the forum with idiotic crap? I don't think so. You're not leaving. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If it makes you feel better, I haven't watched more than about 15 minutes of Raw total since Summerslam. All the shit on there right now just bores me. And I'm really not even that die-hard of an HBK fan. When he first came back from the back injury, he was extremely entertaining, and when he plays a heel, he's extremely entertaining, but when he's doing his cookie-cutter face shit, he's not anywhere near interesting enough for me to pay attention. I'll probably give Raw another chance when they move to USA, and I'll probably follow Lesnar's return if he every signs with WWE again, but for now, I really don't have any reason to follow wrestling. You know what amazes me the most about this forum? All the same smarks who hate the WWE style and value pure wrestling over promos still continue to support Cena. He may be a terrible worker, his character may be incredibly weak and boring, and he may be mediocre on the mic to begin with, but he's young, damn it. He's 28 years old and he has a shiny belt on, so he must be the future of the company. What people don't understand is that age isn't really all that important. WCW was an anamoly in the history of the wrestling business. The problem was that the vast majority of their main eventers were over 40, with many of them being over 45. You had Flair, Hogan, Savage, and DDP main eventing PPVs for months at a time with every one of them over 45. It got to the point where it just wasn't believable and it started to break kayfabe. It's only because they took it to an absolute extreme that it hurt them. However, when the main eventers of a company are 35-40 and have been established for a few years, that doesn't really hurt the company at all. In fact it helps it. Guys like Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kurt Angle, and Chris Benoit are still at the stage where they're tremendous assets to the company; not just because they can "make new stars", but because they'll entertain the fans in their own right. As long as they keep their characters fresh, (which HBK was doing when they started the heel turn), there's no reason they shouldn't hold title belts or be focal points on the show. Angle has injury issues, but there's no reason that Michaels and HHH shouldn't be entertaining on the top level for at least another five years. It doesn't matter that Cena will be around until 2020 if no one's going to want to see him by 2006. The fact is that he's incredibly boring, and that was why I suggested that the person who (at least for a month) had the most interesting character in the WWE, and who displays better ring skill than most of the roster should take the title. If Angle wins this Sunday, it will be an improvement over Cena, but not as much of an improvement. For one thing, Angle really is likely to be leaving in the near future, so building him up is less useful than building up HBK who will be able to contribute to the product for years to come. For another, the character hasn't been built up the same way, and Angle just doesn't seem interesting enough right now to carry the show. Yeah, we get that he's angry, and that works all right for one feud, but it's just not deep enough to make people tune in week after week. In the long run, he just looks like a pawn for Bischoff, and Bischoff as the top heel is a recipe for disaster and extreme boredom. Basically, what I've gotten crucified and dragged through the dirt in this topic for is just saying that Raw is pretty much unwatchable if it's centered around Cena, and I wanted someone who entertained me to be the focus of the show. I don't really care if HBK has shiny pants or a tiny bald spot or if he didn't want to job to somebody 10 years ago. The fact is that he had an entertaining character that the WWE could and should have built on, he can still wrestle better than 95% of the roster, and he would have made a much more interesting champion than John Cena.
