    Best Summerslam

I voted for 92. It's always been one of my all-time favorite ppvs. I like the feel of the show. I like both the Money Inc. vs. LOD and Shawn vs. Martel matches. I like the build up as to which corner will Perfect be in. And the actual Savage-Warrior match is excellent as well. And of course the Bret vs. Bulldog IC title match is an absolute classic, as should be evidenced by how far it made it in the best NA match ever tourney not too long ago.

    According to Meltzer.....

Hmm, I said earlier that I'd be happy if the report was true and it's looking more and more like it is. I don't like the idea of Orton winning the belt at SSlam, but the more I think about it the more I like the idea of Orton beating Benoit for the title. Here's how I would do it: Start Monday with Benoit beating Trips in the ironman with Eugene interfering. HHH goes to Bischoff and demands a match with Eug at Slam telling Bischoff that he will rid the WWE of Eugene once and for all. Bischoff of course grants his wish. Later Bischoff comes out and says Raw has one match for Slam, but we need to determine who Benoit will defend his title against at the ppv. He announces that the main event will be Orton vs. Edge with the winner getting the shot (I want to say Jericho just because Orton and Edge have faced so much recently, but I think the Orton-Edge match-up just gives them so many more angles to play up leading up to and during the match) at SSlam. Orton then wins the match. Next week we find evolution in the locker room and HHH is telling Orton that at Slam, he will destroy Eugene and Orton will soften Benoit up so that H can take back his title. Orton balks at this and says he'd like to be champion too. HHH angrily tells Orton that it is his title and no one else will defeat Benoit for it. We leave it at that for now. They play this up for the weeks leaading into Slam. At Slam HHH beats or loses to Eugene, I don't think it really matters. Then during the title match Orton looks like he is going to win (possibly with help from Flair or Batista) and HHH comes down to ask what the hell he (or they) think he's doing. This allows Benoit to get the crossface on and Orton taps. In the following weeks they have Orton and HHH seemingly make ammends, but we aren't really sure. Then on a Raw Bischoff announces that there will be a 6 man tag as the main event between Evolution and a face team of like Jericho, Edge, and whoever, and the person who scores the pin will be named # 1 contender for the title (for whatever the next Raw ppv is). HHH tells Evolution that this is perfect and they are to make sure he wins. During the match Trips hits the pedigree on someone but is then pulled out of the ring. Orton seizes the opportunity and makes the cover for the win. HHH is of course furious and tells Orton that he'd better not win the title at the ppv. At the ppv Orton wins the belt. Then when we get to Raw, we have Flair and Batista celebrating with Orton and HHH walks in. He says he thought about it and he was wrong and is happy for Orton and everything is cool. He then says something about going out to the ring to take care of some business. He starts to lead the way and Orton stops him and says something about how since he's the champ now shouldn't he be the one leading the way. HHH gets one of his constipated faces and says "after you, champ." And the story goes on from there. But like Rudo said, I really think this could be the most interesting thing to happen to HHH in YEARS.

    According to Meltzer.....

Makes perfect sense in my opinion. As I said, Eugene vs. Trips is by the far the most built up match possible for SSlam on either show. And Orton has been improving and they obviously want him to be a major player. Well there is no better way to groom him for that position than a World Title match against Benoit at Slam. I would look forward to seeing how this match-up would work out. I hope this report is true. And I think it is.

Benoit vs HHH Ironman match thread

I think the early start time might just favor Benoit. HHH loves to end the show having dominated someone or someones and growling at the camera. If he was going to win the title, I think the Ironman would be on last. I'm going to predict Benoit retains due to Eugene and then HHH runs to Bischoff and demands a match with Eugene at SSlam. Then they build that up for the rest of the night. As for those who say HHH will win and then defend against Edge at Slam because HHH HAS to be in the main event, what makes you think HHH vs. Eugene WOULDN'T be the main event of SSlam?
  8. 4hartthreat

    According to Meltzer.....

If HHH is not wrestling Benoit at SSlam, then it HAS to be HHH vs. Eugene. It is the most built up match in the entire company. I think Edge defends against Orton again, since the ending on Monday looked to me like those two had unfinished business. That would mean Benoit would have to find someone else to face, hopefully Jericho.

Benoit vs HHH Ironman match thread

Yeah, that's what I said I thought the finish would likely be earlier, but in your comparison thing you screwed up a little. Eugene wouldn't attack Benoit (Rock) because that would lead to HHH getting DQed and cause Benoit to win and retain, not HHH.

Benoit vs HHH Ironman match thread

Well I think everyone here knows Eugene will be involved in this match as it will be his screw you HHH I'm not leaving the WWE statement. This can't possibly be the time for the "hey I'm not really a retard" turn, it's too soon and fresh off the beating from Evolution which will likely garner him more sympathy than ever. I see three possible outcomes for this match. The much mentioned draw leading to a rematch at SSlam. Eugene running out and costing HHH the title yet again. I find this unlikely since they JUST did this at Vengeance. It would be my choice of the three though. Eugene running down and costing Benoit the title ON ACCIDENT. Everyone here has talked about Eugene turning and costing Benoit the title, but like I said I don't see him turning yet, but no one has mentioned what I think is the most likely scenario which is with time running out and the score tied, Eugene runs down to the ring furious at HHH and attacks him getting Benoit DQed and giving HHH the title. I think the more interesting thing about this match is what comes AFTER it. I already said I didn't think they could do do Trips-Benoit at Vengeance and then sell it as a big match at SSlam too. But I KNOW they can't have it again between the two and an ironman match to boot and still have it be the big match at Slam. So what will this match mean for SSlam? As I said, if it goes to draw you have to do the rematch at Slam, but I think that idea is horrible and the WWE shouldn't even consider pulling that bullshit on the fans. If H wins things definately get interesting. If Eugene costs Benoit the title, you can sell a Benoit-H match as a chance for the wrongs against Benoit to be righted. But that also leaves open the window for the often talked about H-Edge title match in Edge's hometown. If Benoit retains I honestly can't see anyway for the WWE to sell Trips as a serious contender for the title. He would HAVE to go back down after two shots in a less than month span. That doesn't mean he will, but he definately should. I would like to see Benoit retain and then HHH focus his anger on Eugene and face him at SSlam which honestly has been built up better than any other possible match for the card, and free Benoit up to defend against someone else, hopefully Jericho, maybe Orton.

Does anyone know of a tape site that has this match? I remember seeing it as it happened and loving it, but have never seen it since and have always wanted to see it again, but have never been able to find a place that has it. I've been looking for this match and a Vader and Austin vs. Flair and Arn match from a WCW Saturday Night in 93, forever.....

Fun match, but Eug and Flair not winning the tag titles now makes me go back to thinking Trips will not win the title tonight. Guess we'll see, it's so hard to predict things when H is involved.....

    HHH winning the title Sunday

I never said that he didn't win in a one on one match against HBK, I just said that the win was meaningless and that the situation should be fixed.
  21. 4hartthreat

    HHH winning the title Sunday

HBK also main evented the next ppv, while Benoit (the champion) did not. I'd say Benoit still needs a good one on one W againt Shawn.
  22. 4hartthreat

    HHH winning the title Sunday

Didn't he already beat HBK one on one on Raw or something? Yeah but one is never enough for that HBK bastard! Yes Benoit beat HBK on Raw, but it was a bullshit finish. HBK pretty much had Benoit beat and then HHH ran down and gave Shawn the pedigree and Benoit covered. And then the whole victory was overshadowed by the HBK-HHH hates each other stuff. That isn't really beating someone one on one in a meaningful way in my book.

    HHH winning the title Sunday

I think Benoit will retain on Sunday. As most have already said, he NEEDS this one on one win against HHH. Then we come to SummerSlam. Most also think there is a rematch here and HHH will take the title from Benoit here instead. I just don't think that makes sense. We would have just had this match at a smaller ppv, so putting it as the "money" match here just wouldn't work for me. I think they set up H-Edge on this past Raw and I think they go with that. Benoit should defend against Jericho and if not him, Orton. Then for the Halloween Havoc ppv in October, Benoit should get his one on one win against HBK that he also needs. That sets up perfectly for H to regain the title at Survivor Series possibly in a 2 out of 3 falls match. I think this scenario is much better than the rematch at Slam one as it gives Benoit the few more wins he really needs to truly prove that he is "for real," and H gets his title back at a big ppv, just one a little later than slam.

    SummerSlam

So after Raw last night, it seems that Benoit will by some miracle retain the World Title and be the champion heading into SS. So my question is, what does that leave us as the title match at Slam? There was talk of Edge getting a shot in his hometown. A Benoit-Edge title match looked very likely weeks ago, but all the build-up to it was dropped when HHH became available for Vengeance. And after lst night, it seems to me that Edge will be facing HHH at SSlam. Now of course if I'm wrong and HHH does win the title Sunday, then I guess Edge will be getting his shot afterall. The most talked about title match for SSlam was Benoit-HHH. It seemed to make perfect sense that this big match would be saved for SSlam, but when HHH's movie was put on hold, he was plugged into the Vengeance title spot. So this would now have to be a rematch from the previous month's ppv, which I think hurts the match as being as big a draw as it could have been. I wouldn't have doubted for a second that this is where they were going, but again after last night, it would appear Edge and HHH are headed on a collision course to SSlam. So this puts the two most likely challengers in a match against each other. So who does that leave? After last night I strongly suspect that at SSlam we will finally get the match we've been wanting since Benoit got the title at Mania, Benoit vs. Jericho. I believe he's the only other legitimate challenger out there. The only other thing I could see in Eugene, but they wouldn't do THAT, would they? And as I was typing this, Orton popped into my mind, which I guess I could also see and would have no problem with. So, as of right now what do you think the World Title match will be a SummerSlam?

Best Bret Hart World title defense

I also voted Ironman. Not only do I think it's the best match up there, it is probably the most important as well. By way of this match, HBK was launched as WWF Champion (and a very good champion he was), and this also led to the problems that would lead to Bret's troubled departure from the WWF. HBK's refusal to "return the favor" from this match would eat away at Bret, hell probably to this very day.
