The One and Only Batman Begins thread
pochorenella replied to Ravenbomb's topic in Television & Film
I don't think it is a long-shot to reach that number. In fact, I believe BB could do just a bit south of $200 million if the current trend holds. It started rather slow IMO but has held up really well despite all the heavy competition. We'll have to see. -
The One And Only Fantastic Four Thread...

Saw it yesterday and enjoyed it, though I have to say it was more kid-friendly that any other comic-book movies in recent memory, specially the more adult-oriented flicks like X-Men or Batman Begins. The approach of making Doom be a part of the initial powers-inducing accident is one I could accept and one that has already been used to good effect on the pages of Ultimate F4, which gives the mythos a modernized look. I didn't mind Doom not beign the ruler of Latveria just yet. I'm pretty sure it'll come in later films given that his latverian heritage was mentioned a couple of times. What I did found lacking was the special effects and a little more action I guess was needed. The Human Torch was no doubt the star of the film, with the Thing coming right behind him, so great performances on the part of both the respective actors. Mr. Fantastic was ok and the Invisible Woman a bit disappointing, specially with the use of their respective powers, or in the case of Mr.Fantastic, lack of, but he made up a bit for it at the climax, so I would have liked to see much more of those abilities. Essentially I think they captured the comic-book very well: the constant bickering between them, the Torch's pranks towards the Thing, Reed's exaggerated concern for science over personal stuff. It's all taken right off the comics pages. So beign a big fan of the F4 series I don't think most fans will be disappointed much. If you want to see a more light-hearted comics adaptation then this is the one for you. And $21 million on friday? Damn, that's much much higher than I anticipated. Really, with all the bad reviews I would have considered $21 million for the whole weekend a success. Great numbers. -
The One And Only Fantastic Four Thread...

I might be going to see it tonight but I really have very low expectations. Ultimately my opinion should be the one that counts, but all this below par reviews (Ebert gave it *) have left me bummed. Hopefully I'll shift into "comic-book movie mode" at the theater and try to have some fun and not be overly critical. -
I've never seen or heard about that 2/3 falls match. When did it take place and is it available in any release?
-
The match definitely needs to be released on DVD. My VHS copy is really lacking in the picture-quality department.

Better than Bret-Diesel and HBK-Razor ladder 2? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'd have to say yes on my part.

What exactly is your definition of losing CLEAN? Without outside interference only, or without the opponent cheating? If it's the former you can add vs Edge at RR2005 when he grabbed the ropes, or vs Orton (Unforgiven?) when he used brass knucks (Flair didn't factor much in the finish.) If it's the latter, then what high profile babyface (other than Jericho) loses CLEAN regularly to a high profile heel without the heel cheating (other than HHH)? And they may not be singles matches per se, but HBK did lose CLEAN at SummerSlam 2003 to Goldberg and to Benoit at Backlash 2004. -
Thomas Haden Church cast as villain for Spider-Man
pochorenella replied to EdwardKnoxII's topic in Television & Film
That's the Tarantula. He's an ok villain, I guess. And I know that I might be opening a can of worms here, (then again, this isn't the Comic Books Folder) but Spidey has the absolute best rogues gallery in all of comicdom. Yes, even better than Batman's or Flash's, but they're all Top 3 and interchangeable depending on your hero taste. With Spidey you don't need Magnetos or Apocalypses, that's why guys like Vulture, Sandman and the like play so well with him. Edit: Beat to it by Spider-Fan. -
La Resistance did. They tried to powerbomb him from the ring thru a table outside and they missed. Spike landed with his neck hitting the table. Edit: vivisecti beat me to it.

The Headline should be: "RETURN OF THE MONSTER." I, for one, am extremely happy if this negotiations are positive. I always thought he was/is a unique wrestler the likes that rarely comes along: Big and powerful, but fast, agile and technically sound, with a commanding presence. And add another vote that he should go to SD! for a WM spot vs. Batista. I saw a match they had back in OVW and it wasn't that good but they were both very green at the time. That's the money match IMO.

I'd buy this show, *KNK*

I'd take a Brooke Hogan Atomic Legdrop any time... I actually think it'd be pretty cool to have Hogan as a chaperone. I can almost see myself just talking to the guy all night about wrestling stories and brushing off Brooke. Almost, mind you. She is a hottie, but she's not legal yet.

All Time: Shawn Michaels Steve Austin Kurt Angle Mick Foley The Rock Chris Benoit Bret Hart Current (excluding from the above): Eddie Guerrero Shelton Benjamin Carlito Christian Rey Misterio And I should mention that I was a HUGE Ultimate Warrion fan back in the day. I didn't know any better.

HTQ, I was addressing your post about people confusing putting over to jobbing. I'm giving an example. Why the hell do you get worked up about it? -

Like when Bret Hart jobbed to Shawn at WMXII but didn't really put him over? -

Bret Hart screwed Bret Hart. Shawn just did what Vince told him to do, so it's unfair to tag him with that, although it's the "popular" thing to do by smarks. -
Now that would be a real bummer.

I was just saying that December 30th should be the release date for the Survivor Series 2005 DVD, since SS is on mid-to-late November and the DVDs are taking almost exactly one month to come out, except for ONS which was clearly a rush job. So a 12-30 release date for another PPV DVD other than SSeries seems kinda odd, specially if it's a PPV that as far as I know is no longer on WWE's calendar. I for one would like to see that Iron Man match on DVD, as I really liked it, enough for a **** from me at least. Specially sweet would be bonus footage from the commercial breaks. As for other matches I'd like to see, Angle vs Rock (the Title win should be a lock, but the rematch at NWO would be great) and Angle vs Undertaker (from SD!) And I can't even start to fathom what could possibly be included on a History of the WWF/E Title set. But I second that 3-disc motion.

Happy to see EpisodeIII still hanging in there despite all the heavy competition. Seems a sure bet to hit north of $385 million, even without the benefit of an IMAX release, which is a shame since movies like Batman Begins are cleaning up at those theaters, it would've hit $400 million for sure. Too early to make predictions for Fantastic Four next week?

Let the bitching commence on how WWE's involvement on the ECW PPV caused this HUGE show to get below 300,000 buys. Really, who truly expected a brand that never got great PPV buys to all of a sudden get WrestleMania-like numbers? Nostalgia alone can't be a helping factor. Of course it was gonna bring more buys than ever before, but now that it didn't do 500,000 or whatever number some idiot let out you can't seriously put the blame on Steve Austin appearing or JBL doing a promo on the show. If anything, all the promotion on RAW and SD! helped get more awareness on the show. At least that's my take.

The movie's getting pretty mixed reviews from what I've read. Roger Ebert gave it ** and that accounts for a Thumbs Down (not that most people here care what he says anymore) and that movie critic guy on NBC said he preferred Mars Attacks to this thing. Check rottentomatoes.com where it's getting a 72% rating, still fresh, but not the be-all end-all blockbuster most expected. Personally, I like Cruise's work and couldn't care less about his love life and scientology-preaching. He's been in some great movies, and of course, Spielberg is one of my faves. Minority Report I think is truly underappreciated because of its ending, and from all accounts this one has a hard-to-swallow endind, too. I'll try and check it out this weekend.

One and Only "ECW: One Night Stand" Thread
pochorenella replied to GreatWhiteNope's topic in The WWE Folder
Hope nobody takes this the wrong way: If the major disappointment expressed here for the DVD is taken as a fair sample of ECW fans, then what kind of message will the WWE receive when the ONS DVD theoretically doesn't sell nearly as much as previous releases? That ECW is not as hot as they thought? Or that some fans are morons because they don't buy a DVD 'cause some entrance music is changed and some curse words are bleeped? I for one am buying the DVD. Hell, it's already on its way. Maybe I won't be as impressed to Sandman's entrance but that's not a major reason (at least for ME) not to buy the DVD. If all the hoopla and reports are accurate I'll enjoy the atmosphere and the matches, hopefully. -
After last night, can we finally end the myth

HHH did job to Booker twice that year. Once before Mania and at least another time after, both in tag matches. Booker pinned him cleanly IIRC. -

I was checking the worldwide grossing for the movie and I noticed that ROTS is yet to open in Japan. Anybody know why it's taking this long for that particular country? If past history and current movie appeal is any indication, ROTS could gross about $100 million in Japan when it's all said and done. That could put the movie in the $900-950 million range for worldwide gross at the end of its run. Outstanding.
