"The Best Of" by the B-52's "Mermaid Avenue II" by Billy Bragg and Wilco (finally opted to buy it in spite of my dislike of Bragg's voice, only to find my favourite song on the album-All You Fascists-is sung by Billy. Rest of the album is really good too, especially the Natalie Merchant sung track)

    Impulse purchases

While home for the Easter weekend, I decided to look through my CD racks for more albums to take back to my flat on Monday. In doing so, I realised that, in years gone by when I had more money, I'd bought a lot of albums purely because of the cover or the album name, to mixed levels of success. These included: "Dial M For Motherfucker" by Pussy Galore- bought for it's title and it's cover (a man with a huge afro kicking down a door), only to find to my joy that Jon Spencer (of Blues Explosion fame) was a member and the album was actually really good, although still not good enough to justify such a good title "Aeromusical" by Superbus- bought while on holiday in January for about £2, a purchase I justified because of it's cover using the logic that any band using that much pink and blue would have to provide at least some throwaway pop fun. The end result? The French No Doubt. C'est la vie Am I the only one to be seduced by interesting looking albums, or is this regular practise for others?

    English Football

Putting the "Tosh" in "Toshack", I'm giving up on yet another qualifying campaign. If Toshack really thinks that Carl Fletcher is better than Robbie Savage, then he's a useless twat. Bollocks to it, I'm dedicating my time to rugby now

    The return of Dr. Who

The problem was that, for all the hype about the BBC spending a fortune on special effects, it still looked shit. Outside of Christopher Eccleston, the acting was appalling and it reminded me more of the kind of mild drama I used to watch when younger (example for my fellow Brits being the Demon Headmaster) than quality primetime viewing.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

In a similar vein, I recently rediscovered Wilt, Cormac from Kerbdog's other band. Their debut album "Bastinado" is only 5 years old, but sounds like it wouldn't be out of place second on the bill at a Posies gig in the early 90's. I mean this in the best possilbe way.

Early Album of the Year Candidates?

It's only been out two weeks, but I've already developed an unhealthy love for Idlewild's "Warnings/Promises", which is fantastic. Any fears about a new "mature" direction I once held have been eradicated, as they've just developed into better songwriters, without totally reinventing themselves for a middle-aged market as their peers (hello Feeder, Snow Patrol) have in recent years. It got kind of overlooked upon release, as the UK media seemed far more concerned with the Kaiser Chiefs album, but I think love of "W/P" will increase as the year progresses.
  11. This week: The Machinist- 8/10 I'd have felt devastated for Christian Bale if this was anything less than great after the sacrfice he made. Thankfully it lived up to the hype, really built up well to the final twist. Miss Congeniality 2: Armed And Fabulous- 2/10 One of these points is for Shatner, the other is for Ernie Hudson.

    November Rain #1 single ever

This is exactly why a magazine whose main audience is disgruntled 14 year olds shouldn't have any "Best song EVER!!" type polls. Over half this list is just laughable, most notably the Kings of Leon. Every band there could be represented by at least one superior song, especially Manson.
  14. In fairness to Alex Shane, he did have a war of words with his opponent Raven for two consecutive weeks in a national newspaper (the Daily Star) which surely will have garnered the event more attention. Also, it makes sense that he booked himself on the card (in a match he lost, despite having outside inteference to help him before the Foley run in) seeing as he is the champion of Britain's biggest promotion

"We're A Happy Family: A Tribute To The Ramones" by various artists- saw it for £3 and was enticed by a Marilyn Manson cover of "The KKK Took My Baby Away", which isn't as interesting as it sounds. Features some truly awful renditions of great songs. The U2 cover of "Beat On The Brat" is especially horrendous, although Pete Yorn's "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" is surprisingly good "This Island" by Le Tigre- really liking this on the first few listens...more polished than previous efforts, but still with the slightly shambolic charm that makes them so appealing "Missing You: The Collection" by Chris De Burgh- a bargain at just £4. "Lady In Red" is strangely absent, but "Spanish Train" is such a great song.

After the "Albums you never listen to" thread, I'm listening to "Glorious" by Andreas Johnson from the album "Leibling". I can almost guarantee I won't listen to much more of the album tho.

Albums You Own But Don't Listen To

While at uni, I bought loads of CD's from second-hand stores in a case of false economy, many of which I haven't listened to in years. These include, off the top of my head, "A Northern Soul" by the Verve, "Leisure Noise" by Gay Dad, "To The Faithful Departed" by the Cranberries and "Ray Of Light" by Madonna, as well as the Clawfinger album that featured "The Truth", which I think I listened to once. And, just like MIG, I too own "Leibling" by Andreas Johnson, but that only cost me £1
