Shit hits the fan in Iraq

Although I was against the war, due to the what seems to be the exagerration of Iraqs threat, and the scary eagerness to go to war by us and america, there is nothing more I would like to see is Iraq get on its feet, and become a good solid State, but events over the last two days seems to indicate the shit has well and truely hit the fan with this Uprising and what seems to be(too early to tell yet, its still ongoing) descent into anarchy US helicopter gunships have been firing at targets in a Shia Muslim district of Baghdad on the second day of a revolt across Iraq by a religious militia. Supporters of radical cleric Moqtada Sadr have been involved in violent protests against the US-led coalition. The coalition accuses Mr Sadr of trying to usurp its power and says the revolt will not be tolerated. US troops also began an offensive in Falluja, a Sunni town where four Americans were killed and mutilated. The protests were triggered by the closure of Mr Sadr's main newspaper a week ago; they intensified after the arrest on Saturday of one of his top aides, Mustafa Yacoubi. We have a group under Moqtada al-Sadr that has basically placed itself outside the legal authorities, the coalition and Iraqi officials US administrator Paul Bremer 'There are a lot of guns around' Many of Iraq's majority Shia Muslims, repressed under Saddam Hussein, welcomed last year's US-led invasion, and attacks on coalition forces were largely confined to the minority Sunni community before Sunday's violence. However, Mr Sadr has become an increasingly outspoken opponent of the occupation. The US administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer, said on Monday that Mr Sadr's followers had effectively placed themselves outside the law. Ambush Apache gunships targeted militiamen of Mr Sadr's Mehdi Army on the streets of the capital's mainly Shia district of al-Shuala as a battle raged on the ground, correspondents report. One US vehicle was reported to be in flames, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. At least nine coalition soldiers and 46 Iraqis have been killed in confrontations related to the protests. HAVE YOUR SAY The likely outcome will be the same as Yugoslavia after Tito went. Poisoned chalice, anyone? Simon Richardson, London, UK Local resident Abbas Amid told the AFP news agency that fighting had flared after a US troop convoy tried to enter Shuala and came under heavy fire. There was also tension in Sadr City, a district which saw eight US troops and a reported 22 Iraqis killed in Sunday's fighting. American tanks were blocking approaches to the area and soldiers were carrying out vehicle searches as angry protesters gathered again. In Basra, about 150 Mehdi Army members occupied the governor's office at dawn on Monday as part of the protests, but said they were staging a peaceful sit-in. Brief exchanges of gunfire have been reported outside the office with soldiers from the city's UK garrison, but there is no indication of casualties. Four Shia Iraqis were killed in clashes with UK forces in the south-eastern city of Amara on Sunday, while a protest which turned violent near the holy city of Najaf left a coalition soldier from El Salvador dead, along with about 20 Iraqis. Coalition forces arrested Mustafa Yacoubi in connection with the murder last year of a rival cleric, Abdel-Majid al-Khoei, and closed down the Al-Hawza newspaper on the grounds that it was inciting violence. Paul Bremer accused Mr Sadr of seeking to "establish his authority in the place of the legitimate authority". "We have a group under Moqtada al-Sadr that has basically placed itself outside the legal authorities, the coalition and Iraqi officials..." he said in Baghdad. Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's leading Shia cleric, appealed for calm and negotiations on Sunday, as a call to "terrorise the enemy" circulated among Moqtada al-Sadr's followers.

I dont think the BBC were nailed for being anti-war, and watching their coverage, I didnt really notice it, although a few Murdoch papers took shots at them, personally, I prefer Sky News
  3. Arabic television station al-Jazeera has shown footage of three Japanese civilians it said were taken hostage by a previously unknown Iraqi group. The group, called the Mujahideen Brigades, said it would kill the hostages unless Tokyo withdrew its troops from Iraq within three days. Eight South Korean church ministers are also reported to have been seized by an unnamed Iraqi group. And a British civilian went missing in the town of Nasiriya on Tuesday. In its first reaction, Japan said it had no plans to withdraw the troops. The BBC's Jonathan Head in Tokyo said the hostage-taking will be a "wrenching experience" for Japan. It will put extreme pressure on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who took the decision to send the troops, despite the extreme misgivings of many Japanese citizens, our correspondent says. Mr Koizumi has argued that the mission is necessary to bolster Japan's role in the international community. Statement A statement by the Mujahideen Brigades said Japan had betrayed Iraqis by backing the US occupation of Iraq. "We tell you that three of your children have fallen prisoner in our hands and we give you two options - withdraw your forces from our country and go home or we will burn them alive and feed them to the fighters," it said. "You have three days from the date of this tape's airing." The TV said the hostages included a journalist and an aid worker. South Korea's foreign ministry said one of the South Koreans had managed to escape. It is not clear if the two incidents are linked. Japanese concerns Japan has sent 550 ground troops to Iraq on "a non-combat mission" to help rebuild the country. Earlier on Thursday, Tokyo vowed to make no hasty decisions about its troops in the southern city of Samawa after explosions near their camp. Concerns regarding the security of Japan's troops are high because critics argue Japan's constitution could be violated if the troops are drawn into combat. Japan's constitution prohibits the use of force in international disputes, but the Japanese government argues the country is entitled to exercise self-defence and the troops will be able to return fire if they are attacked.

Shit hits the fan in Iraq

LOL, like this is going to diffuse the tension The US-led coalition in Iraq says an arrest warrant has been issued for radical cleric Moqtada Sadr. A coalition spokesman told a news conference in Baghdad that the warrant had been issued in connection with the murder of a rival cleric last year. The statement came on the second day of violent anti-coalition protests across Iraq by Mr Sadr's supporters. US helicopter gunships targeted militia members loyal to Mr Sadr in the mainly Shia district of al-Shuala in Baghdad. Coalition officials told a news conference in Baghdad that the arrest warrant had been drawn up by an Iraqi judge and would be executed "without advance warning". Mr Sadr has denied any involvement in the killing of Abdel-Majid al-Khoei in Najaf in April last year. Shit hits the fan in Iraq

One last update for the time being, and I wonder how Bush wil speak about this? Coming hot on the heels that Colin Powell admitted that the evidence he gave to the UN was "flawed Hundreds of US and Iraqi troops have surrounded the city US troops have launched a big offensive against Iraqi insurgents in the Sunni flashpoint town of Falluja. They have sealed off the town where four Americans were killed and their bodies mutilated by a mob last week. Unconfirmed reports say several people were killed when a US warplane dropped bombs on a residential area of the town after a mortar attack on troops. The US command has vowed to "pacify" Falluja, where four civilian contractors were killed on Wednesday. Falluja lies in the heartland of resistance to the US-led occupation. Extended operation US troops closed off entrances to Falluja with earth barricades ahead of the planned operation, code named "Vigilant Resolve". About 1,200 marines and two battalions of Iraqi security forces were poised to enter the city to arrest suspected insurgents, Associated Press news agency quoted Lt James Vanzant of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force as saying. "The city is surrounded," Mr Vanzant said. "It's an extended operation. We want to make a very precise approach to this. ... We are looking for the bad guys in town." US aircraft were reported to have struck a residential area in the city, killing many people according to witnesses. There has been no confirmation by the US-led coalition. The operation was to last several days, the US military said. Horrific images The four US contractors - working for Blackwater Security Consulting - were ambushed and killed as they drove through Falluja last Wednesday. An angry crowd surrounded the cars, throwing stones and setting the vehicles ablaze. The corpses were dragged from the wreckage and television pictures showed one burnt body being kicked and stamped on, while at least two were tied to cars and driven through the streets, witnesses said. Adults and children hacked the bodies to pieces, before lynching two of the charred remains from a bridge spanning the Euphrates River. Two of them were hanged from a bridge.

Shit hits the fan in Iraq

Some more info from Sky News US HELICOPTERS MOVE IN US Apache helicopters have sprayed fire on the private army of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al Sadr during fierce battles in a Baghdad district. The fighting erupted when five vehicles carrying US soldiers and the Iraqi Civil Defence Corps tried to enter the district. It is claimed that members of the ICDC, a paramilitary force trained by the Americans, turned on the US soldiers and started to shoot at them. The soldiers fled their vehicles and headed for cover and then began to battle both the Mehdi Army and the ICDC members. Earlier in Baghdad, militia men loyal to al Sadr were involved in clashes in Baghdad in which seven American soldiers died and more than two dozen of their comrades were wounded. Elsewhere, US Marines were reported to have launched an offensive in Fallujah where four US contractors were brutally killed last week. In British-controlled Basra, the governor's office was stormed by hundreds of al Sadr followers demanding the release of an aide. The series of protests by Shia militants is being seen as an alarming development by the US. "We have a group under Moqtada al Sadr that has basically placed itself outside the legal authorities, the coalition and Iraqi officials," said Mr Bremer, head of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Spanish-led troops also fought Sadr supporters in the holy city of Najaf, where at least 20 people were killed, along with one soldier from El Salvador. Four people died in fighting between Sadr militiamen and British soldiers in the southern city of Amara. Two American soldiers and a marine have been killed in three other, separate, attacks. New Doctor Who Announced

Shallow Grave actor Christopher Eccleston has been named as the new Doctor Who to front the cult BBC sci-fi show when it returns next year. Eccleston, who starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the horror movie The Others, will be the ninth TV Time Lord to control the Tardis in a 13-part series. The 40-year-old has starred in Flesh and Blood, The Second Coming, and TV series Our Friends in the North. The BBC said the Salford-born actor would take "a fresh, modern approach". 'Edgy and eccentric' Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning, said: "We are delighted to have cast an actor of such calibre in one of British television's most iconic roles. "It signals our intention to take Doctor Who into the 21st century, as well as retaining its core traditional values - to be surprising, edgy and eccentric." Executive producer and writer Russell T Davies said: "Christopher was our first choice. "His casting raises the bar for all of us. It's going to be a magnificent, epic, entertaining journey, and I can't wait to start." The hugely-popular Doctor Who show ran for 26 years from 1963 and the new series will be filmed in Cardiff later this year. He first came to public attention with his portrayal of Derek Bentley in the film, Let Him Have It before notching up a wealth of TV and movie credits. He was then snapped up by Hollywood and was cast in David Cronenberg's eXistenZ with Jude Law, and Gone in Sixty Seconds with Nicholas Cage. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

    Wrestling FAQ

Alright, I cant answer all the pm's sorry, cos it would take forever, so heres a little FAQ, that might help out. How do I view The Wrestling Channel on digital satellite? Go to channel 432 on your digibox. You do not need to subscribe to any Sky packages or have a viewing card. Will it be on cable or Freeview? The channel is negotiating with Telewest to appear at some point. Negotiations are apparently serious, but with nothing confirmed. There are no firm negotiations with NTL, but polite letters to NTL requesting the channel will not hurt. A petition is at: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?TWC2004 Because there is room for so few channels on Freeview, it is virtually certain The Wrestling Channel will never be carried. When does it broadcast? From 10am to 3am every day. New programming debuts between 9pm and midnight, and all shows are repeated at various other times throughout the week. The channel carries infomercials from 7am-10am and is off-air from 3am-7am. (Since launching, the channel is on a temporary schedule until every show has aired at least once, allowing repeats to then follow. The full regular timetable will be in operation from Sunday 21 March. A full schedule is at www.thewrestlingchannel.tv/schedule.html What is on, at what time, and when is it from? TNA Xplosion(New episodes debut each Monday, 9pm) The preview show (shown on local TV in the US). Shown on six month delay, so each week’s Xplosion sets up the TNA International show on Wednesday. Contains highlight’s of the previous week’s TNA International show, promos for the upcoming show, and a few short matches (usually squashes). CMLL (Monday, 10pm) The one hour show produced for Galavision (Mexico/US Spanish language channel). First two weeks will be from early January. The show will then jump to mid-March, putting us about five weeks behind the original taping (and actually a few weeks ahead of the US broadcast). Noah (Monday, 11pm) First three weeks will be TV shows from various points in 2001/2002. From then we get the current TV show as up to date as tape delivery allows. Last word was that it'll be the two hour show from Japanese satellite TV (which shows most of a full event), split into two parts. However, this would mean we end up slipping further behind each week, so it may suggest Noah could expand to two hours if it goes down well. Ring of Honor (Tuesday, 9pm) Events from late 2003 chopped into one hour shows. Shoot interview (Tuesday, 10pm) RF Video releases, minus the bonus matches. Edited to fit a 2 hour slot or split over two weeks. TNA International (Wednesday, 9pm) Special edition of the US PPV shown on six month delay (due to the company’s agreement with PPV firms). All ‘sales pitch’ segments and US references are removed, plus any expendable filler, to cut the show to a 90 minute timeslot (plus adverts). The show is edited by TNA, not the Wrestling Channel. The first airing was missing the main event due to a mistake by The Wrestling Channel. This will not be standard practice. New Japan (Wednesday, 11pm) First two to three weeks are from spring/summer 2003 (taken from the ‘Ultimate Crush’ Tokyo Dome show and the Super Junior tournament.. From then we get the current Japanese network TV show as up to date as tape delivery allows. FWA (Thursday, 9pm) British promotion. The first five weeks or so will be either Seasons Beatings matches (December 2003) or profiles of particular wrestlers. After this, brand new shows created specifically for the channel will begin. (It’s not yet confirmed, but the booking of a monthly date in Morecambe suggests this may be the taping location). CZW (Thursday, 10pm) Classic Memphis (Thursday, 11pm) Show specifically created by Jerry Lawler and co for the channel. 26 weeks are already done with more to follow if the show is a success. 3PW (Friday, 9pm) World of Sport (two shows: Friday, 10pm and Saturday, 10pm) Each show will feature matches of a particular wrestler, show a one-night tournament, cover a series of matches between a pair of wrestlers, or have a theme (masked men, Hart family etc). 40 episodes (20 weeks) are already set with more to follow if the show is a success. New Japan classics (Friday 11pm) Taken from the Samurai TV (Japanese sports channel) show of the same name. The library covers matches from the 70s through 90s. Major League Wrestling (Saturday, 9pm) Weekly TV shows from the company’s archive (the group is not currently producing TV). GAEA (Saturday, 11pm) Biggest Japanese womens group. First four weeks are from 2001ish. From then we get regular TV shows on about 6 months delay. Supercard Sunday (Sunday, 9pm) A full show, with MLW Reload, ROH Second Anniversary and CZW Best of the Best 3 scheduled in early weeks. If a show is too long for the 3 hour timeslot, the ‘worst’ matches will be edited off. Will other shows be added? The channel is in talks with various channels, and OVW and UCW are among the possible shows to be added later. UWF/Mid South, Florida (mid 80s) and Mid-Atlantic (early 80s) are available to be picked up by the channel if the existing classic shows do well, but there are no agreements in place. WWE, WCW, ECW and Stampede are all definite no-nos. Will shows be censored? Anything after the watershed (8.30pm for satellite) should be uncut. Before the watershed there will be edits to meet ITC regulation. Cuts should be of a similar extent and nature to the daytime WWE shows on Sky. This will most likely include man on woman violence, graphic blood and weapon shots. The editing will not be as severe as on Friendly TV's second series of tests - these were deliberately overly-censored because of complaints when a CZW death match went out uncut at 8am on the first test run! Why are there problems with the picture/sound? The main sound problems (disparity in volume between adverts and shows, problems with synching to picture) are technical teething issues which the channel is addressing. Dark pictures are caused because the channel has to ‘filter’ out overly bright images to avoid problems with photosensitive epilepsy. At the moment they are erring on the side of caution, though hopefully a better balance will be found. Several of the clips in the preview packages are taken from VHS because the original broadcast tapes had not arrived in time. The show broadcasts should be of better quality, though CZW appears to be suspect on this issue (picture, not wrestling!) If your picture is freezing or breaking up REPEATEDLY, you may have a signal problem. (Solution to follow!) Why is there no English commentary on Japanese/Mexican shows? A) It would be difficult to find an experienced broadcaster with the suitable knowledge who is available to work. B) The audio on the shows comes in a single track, so adding English commentary would either mean faint Japanese commentary in the background, or completely axing the soundtrack, including crowd noise. Mo Chatra will be providing brief voiceovers at the start of shows to identify the wrestlers. What the hell is going on in CMLL?!?! Lucha (Mexican wrestling) is often offputting to new viewer. Here’s a quick guide:  Most matches are best of three falls (primera caida =first fall, segnuda caida = second fall, terceda caida = third fall), six-man tags (trios matches). A ‘una caida’ match is one fall only. CMLL TV often joins the opening match in progress (usually at the start of the final fall).  To win a fall you must beat either the team captain (usually the last man introduced on the team) or both his partners. In a 2 vs 2 tag match you must beat both partners. In theory, a defeated man cannot take part again until the fall is complete, though falls usually come quick enough that the isn’t an issue.  There is no need to tag – when you leave the ring, your partner can come in immediately.  A tag match or singles match is usually only for a title, or to settle a feud with a mask vs mask (mascara contra mascara), hair vs hair (cabellera contra cabellera) or the relevant combination.  There are two referees. One usually favours the technicos (babyfaces/heroes) and one favours the rudos (heels/villains).  ‘Fouls’ are low blows, earning an instant DQ. (Sneaky heels will often fake a low blow). You also get DQed for removing an opponent’s mask (also fakeable by heels) or executing a piledriver. The martinete (tombstone piledriver) is the ultimate illegal move and usually sees the victim out of action for several weeks.  The matches mentioned in a banner at the bottom of the screen at the beginning of the show are usually for house shows (arena events).  Momentos Estrellas is the ‘highlight reel’ section of the show.  After beating a champion in a trios match, a wrestler will often challenge him (or his team) to a title match. They don’t always accept, so you’ll have to either learn Spanish or wait and see!  Lucha looks ‘wrong’ to most first-time viewers because the wrestlers work on the right side of the body instead of the left, and circle around the ring in the opposite direction to normal. It takes time to get used to this (like driving abroad). Wrestlers also bump (fall) in a different way as the rings are notoriously hard), so they prefer to roll rather than land flat. How does the station operate financially? Aside from transmission costs, the programming costs are relatively low as almost all the shows are bought-in tapes. The promotions can charge less for these as they are secondary rights (the original US/Japanese broadcasts will have usually covered the production costs). The channel’s income comes from:  advertising sales;  merchandising (DVD and t-shirt sales will follow); and  premium rate phone lines for competitions. The channel has tentative plans for four live wrestling shows a year (2 in Ireland, 2 in UK) based around featured wrestlers from the channel. However, there are no firm plans made public yet. Why isn't the station listed on Tivo or Digiguide? Because the first week is a test schedule, the regular listings provided obviously did not match what was being broadcast (other than the 9pm-12pm slot). Once the channel has been providing accurate listings consitently for a couple of weeks, Tivo is likely to include the channel's listings. Digiguide is presumably in the same situation, though I don't know for sure. Where can I find out more? www.thewrestlingchannel.tv is the official site. It includes a forum similar in setup to UKFF. Poster 'Herbie747' is Sean Herbert, the main man at the channel.
  13. All I can say is that I hope we(Britain) follow suit and leave the Americans to clean up the absolute fuck up they've made Spain PM to withdraw Iraq troops Spain has more than 1,300 troops in Iraq Spain's Socialist Party prime minister-elect has confirmed his intention to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq. Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: "The war in Iraq was a disaster, the occupation of Iraq is a disaster." The Socialist Party won a shock poll victory after voters appeared to turn on the government over its handling of the Madrid bombings. Spain, with more than 1,300 troops in Iraq, was supported the US-led war on Iraq despite much domestic opposition. Mr Zapatero told Spanish radio that no decision would be taken until he was in power or without wide political consultation. But the soldiers would be pulled out if there was no change in Iraq by the 30 June deadline for transfer of sovereignty. Outsider Socialists won 42% of the vote, while the centre-right Popular Party won 38% in Sunday's general election, held in the wake of the Madrid train bomb attacks that killed 200 people. The BBC's Chris Morris, in Madrid, says the bombings did more than shock Spain to the core; they proved to be the decisive factor in the general election that ousted the government. Mr Zapatero was - until Thursday's bombings - considered an outsider for Spain's top job. Provisional Spanish election results Socialists (PSOE): 42% Popular Party (PP): 38% Catalan Regional Party (CiU): 3% Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC): 2.5% United Left (IU): 5% Turnout: 77% Despite his party's victory, however, there is expected to be much political "horse-trading" because the Socialists did not win an absolute majority. While Mr Zapatero said his first priority was to tackle terrorism "in all its forms", he is thought likely to do it in a very different way than the outgoing government. A larger than expected 77% of the electorate turned out to vote in the wake of last Thursday's attacks. Our correspondent says the late swing to the Socialists raises one disturbing thought - if al-Qaeda was responsible for Thursday's attacks, it appears to have had significant influence in changing the government of a leading Western democracy.

Spain to pull all troops out of Iraq

Yeah I agree with that one, it does make you wonder though, given that both America and Spain have been attacked that we are the only ones left not to be attacked, and with a general election next year, could the same follow suit?
