2009 TSM Worst Poster Tournament: Not-So-Elite-Eight
Czech please! replied to 909's topic in No Holds Barred
I'm not keen on punishing runners-up. Besides, if the winner gets the Countdown Ban, which is my hope, there's still hope for rehabilitation if the 100 posts are deemed good enough to earn a reprieve, since the strict limit of posts will cause the user to consider his words with care. That way, we can possibly fix a bad poster. -
Yeah, that's a really good signing for Houston, so I hope he magically stops being good. Are the Stros hoisting the white flag on J.R. Towles?

Hasek is a flake and repeatedly dogged it. My respect for him is low.

Leaving "Lightning Crashes" off the list was perfectly fine. No such thing. Though I agree that omitting country was a smart move, Shania Twain got enough mainstream airplay that none of her big singles would be considered "country" for the purposes of this. Any twang she had was sufficiently Mutt Langed out anyway, if you ask me.

I loved the Cranston bit too, as well as Tracy's studio session. 30 Rock has been funnier than The Office for a while now.

This turned out to be surprisingly accurate, by the way. -

Yeah! Probably yeah! It was in a very moving scene from Scrubs, when Dr. Cox spent that whole day accidentally killing patients and flipped out, and consider the abject shit it would probably be up against. It would easily beat "How You Remind Me," "Hollaback Girl," "With Arms Wide Open," anything by Fall Out Boy, and several others. It's at least Round of 32 material in a decade for shit singles like the 2000s. "Iris" has a mandolin, though, or a good approximation of one, and that's gotta count for something, right? Look what it's done for "Losing My Religion."

I hope the Nationals free Manny Acta for his own sake. Just say "look, you're really too smart to work for us, you don't deserve this. We'll just let Jim Riggleman deal with this." Here's a guy who actually studies sabermetrics and shit instead of "goin' with muh gut" or whatever grizzled old skippers say, and the only way he can effect his new-found knowledge is to decide whether he'll start Ron Belliard or Willie Harris today. It's tragic, in a sense.

If you do sudden death after each team has had one possession, it defeats the purpose of giving the other team a guaranteed possession in the first place. It would be like terminating a baseball game in the top of the 11th. Okay, so let's say it's Bears against Lions, tied after regulation. Bears call heads. Coin comes up tails. Lions choose to receive, return the kick up to the 24. They get to the other 25, kick a field goal and score. They kick to the Bears. From there, the Bears would need to hit a field goal to tie the game and kick back to the Lions, a touchdown automatically wins the game, and a turnover automatically ends the game. Another scenario would be that the returning team fumbles the ball on the opening kickoff and it is recovered for a touchdown. The game would be over since both teams have advanced the ball. Another, much stranger, scenario is that the opening kickoff is returned for a touchdown. I suppose from there, the only recourse that the matching-possession team has is to return a kick themselves, so any tackle short of the endzone ends the game.

Garbage enver struck me as Favorite Band material.

Salt-N-Pepa- "Whatta Man" (d. "Seether," 23-8): I like the original better, but I never could stand Beck! Goo Goo Dolls- "Iris": Montell is great, but I cannot deny the progress of "Iris," a song I love. The Breeders- "Cannonball": If it beat Mmmbop, it can't be all that bad! Kris Kross- "Jump": I really like the music video because as Kreese pointed out Alex Van Halen is shown drumming when drums aren't playing. Warren G. (ft. Nate Dogg)- "Regulate" (d. "Livin La Vida Loca," 26-5): Region winner. L.L. Cool J- "Mama Said Knock You Out": Voting against Puff Daddy here. Both songs are pretty good. Weezer- "Buddy Holly": I voted for a Weezer song twice. So this is it, huh. Jay-Z- "Can I Get A...": I really need to show how much I don't like "One." Blink 182- "Dammit": Teen Spirit out in the first! Wow! Decent Blink song here. Stone Temple Pilots- "Interstate Love Song": I hate the Blur song and feel good about voting for the lesser of the two STP evils. Seal- "Kiss From a Rose": This was tough, but really at the end of the day, "1979" comes and goes. This was a great vocal performance. No Doubt- "Don't Speak": Doesn't this nick the beginning of Supertramp's "Breakfast in America"? I'm sore about "Dreams" losing. Alanis Morissette- "You Oughta Know": I really don't like Green Day. R.E.M.- "Losing My Religion": Not easy at first, but then I knew this is really far and away better than "Wonderwall." Chumbawumba- "Tubthumpin": Sure. Third Eye Blind- "Semi-Charmed Life": The Blind Melon thing was a little early for me, I think. Wasn't really into MTV yet. This is just concentrated fun, though! It's about meth! TLC- "Waterfalls": I'm gonna pretend I'm voting for "Unpretty." What makes "Unpretty" great is that it has such a positive and empowering message, and really sounds great, with closely mic'd acoustic guitars giving the song a really organic feeling, and a great string part in the back. I wish more people would look inside themselves before judging others, I really do. A pop revelation. Skee-Lo- "I Wish": Endearingly self-effacing. What happened to Skee-Lo? DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince- "Summertime": sure! 2Pac- "California Love": This had a cool bear. I had forgotten all about it. The Verve- "Bittersweet Symphony": classic song, gtfo Dre and Snoop or whoever I just deleted The Cardigans- "Lovefool": this was Romeo+Juliet, right? Eagle-Eye Cherry- "Save Tonight": This won a round? This got in while Real McCoy didn't? I dunno it was okay. Semisonic- "Closing Time": essential song for a '90s-themed dance. Radiohead- "Creep": obligatory Radiohead vote... New Radicals- "You Get What You Give": ...cuz Thommy isn't gonna beat the NEW FUCKIN' RADICALS in the 32! Not on MY watch! Didja hear that Miley Cyrus wanted to get her picture taken with them and they said "no, we don't do that"? Why the hell not? I mean, look. I know Miley Cyrus is an insufferable cunt who annoys everybody (until she gains a nation's sympathy when it finally comes out that her dad molested her), but how hard is it to take a picture with her? And don't tell me that wouldn't be a hilariously cognitively dissonant photo-op right there: Miley and Radiohead, together at last. Postmodern and shit. Look, I like their music bunches, this we all know, but I've never really been able to understand the whole personal narrative and all that jazz with these guys. I get Lou Reed writing depressing music because he's been surrounding with drugs and death and deviance and stuff. Morrissey has had the soul of a 50-year-old gay man since birth, so of course that's going to explain his music. Best I can tell, the Radioheads are just middle-aged Oxbridge grads with wives and kids. They allegedly care about the environment, but not so much as others. Their public difficulty is such a contrivance. Thom Yorke annoys the shit out of me. Weird-eyed fuck is about to get what he gives. Pras (ft. Maya and ODB)- "Ghetto Superstar" : sure Faith No More- "Epic": "I Touch Myself" should not have lost. Lisa Loeb- "Stay (I Missed You)": There is no more perfect match than Lisa Loeb versus Guns n Roses, and I have chosen my side. Ben Folds Five- "Brick": "Only Wanna Be With You" may be the better Nineties Song, and that's usually my criterion, but this song is too good. Gin Blossoms- "Hey Jealousy": power-pop brilliance Meat Loaf- "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)": I cannot believe that a classic like "What's Up" lost to the BUTT-rockin' Foo Fighters. This fucking board. I'm votin' for the Loaf. A vote for Meat Loaf is a vote against meatheads. He isn't black. "I'm Sorry Miss Jackson" was good! EDIT: Turns out I grew up with the dance remix of "What's Up," not the original. I like this better.

But there IS an incentive to winning your division--you still get to go to the playoffs and have a chance to get to the Super Bowl. If you can manage to sell a few division championship t-shirts to some drooling idiots along the way, kudos! You're telling me it's fair that the Colts go 12-4--a great season that included a win over the Chargers--yet have to travel to play the 8-8 Chargers in a wild card game--who barely qualified for the playoffs--just because the Colts happened to be divisionally aligned with the incredible 14-2 Titans and the Chargers' thorough mediocrity was rewarded only by their division mates' total incompetence? That's more unfair than the OT rules. If there's no reward for winning your division, don't have them.

Nobody gets written out of this show. Didn't Toby come back too?
-
sammy pauhlson is not an unripe ahler No, I was referring to Niklas Hjalmarsson, who took over for Wisniewski at defense without immediately adding Pahlsson to the lineup on account of his mono. They've been extremely porous since the trade, giving up 5 to the shitty Avs and Islanders.

The hell is this?

I think most of us knew it was a gimmick. It was just stupid, is all.

There's no comparison between hockey and football, since hockey doesn't have the specialization that football has. Yes, a cornerback can intercept a pass and run it back for the game-winning touchdown, but is the defense meant to do that above all else? Not particularly; it's meant to stop the progress of the offense. Even a strip-at-all-costs defense like the Bears is only gaining possession to put the offensive corps in a better position to score. That's why each possession needs to be matched until there's some sort of turnover or outscoring.

Don't hand anyone the ball at any yard line. That's silly.
