    NFL Opening Week 2005

I didnt see this game as I was stuck with all of GB-Detroit and the end of 49ers-Rams. but here is my stance based on what I do know. With one time out or not you do not run the ball in that situation you just dont. However Tomlinson should be on the field and going out into the pattern on all four of those plays. Now if he was on the field and in the route on those plays then SD did the best they could and fell short, however if Tomlinson wasnt used then they didnt call the best play available. Also saying Marty sucks as a coach is idiotic, he may suck in the playoffs. However, I'd take him over most coaches in the league his regular season record speaks for itself.

    NFL Opening Week 2005

Let me say this right now, this is Tony Dungy's best shot to win the Super Bowl, period. Yeah, I know this is only the 1st game of the year and Baltimore isnt exactly known as an offensive juggernaut but this is a statement game. Dungy finally has most of the pieces he wants on that defense and its only gonna get better. Combine that with their already impressive offense and this is a 13 win team again. If they dont get to the Super Bowl this year it aint happening as long as Dungy's there.

I was very pleased with today's game in Minnesota. The defense finally made plays when it counted and the offense showed signs of life. Combine even an average offense with that D and this is a playoff team in the NFC.

This Week in College Football 9/8 - 9/10

A couple of things, great win by Notre Dame today and Charlie Weis is doing a great job so far. However, for those that say Weis is "turning it around"...bullshit. Ty Willingham did not leave the cupboard bare. The problem with Notre Dame last year and the year was that they were too green to be consistent. They beat Michigan and Tennesee and they had some really bad losses as well. That is to be expected with a young team especially when you are completely changing the type of recruit that comes to the school. They were ready to step up this year simply because the team was older so long as they had a quality head coach and yes I do believe they would be 2-0 with Willingham or Urban Meyer or any other good coach that would have taken or should have the job. For those that say well Willingham is 0-2 at Washington that program is broken right now. However that is more of a 3 year project where ND was a 5 year project because you were changing the type of recruit that was coming there. Dont get me wrong the credit deserves to go to Charlie Weis for his coaching job in 05 since it is his system and his style that are winning right now but I think Willingham or Meyer would do the same. As far as ND's prospects for the rest of the season they may slip up once or twice but I'd be very nervous if I'm a USC fan. Notre Dame is only gonna get better and with Weis's ability to scheme they can give USC a hard time and even possibly pull an upset.

Nl5 the 2nd year is for all intents and purposes an option year just in case he wants to play one more year after this one. If he retires and moves behind the bench for 06-07 his salary wont count against the cap and will probably be used to pay for most of Richards raise.

The Bruins blue line... HAHAHAHA (kidding nl5 had to get that in there) Logistically I would actually agree with that. However, after the Sakic and Gratton fiascos in 97 signing restricted free agents has been frowned upon in the league then again...its been 8 years.

I dont think you can use the 02-03 salary for Richards since he re-upped after that for the 03-04 season (but dont quote me on that). That being said while I dont believe Richards will go, your point about Sather is completely taken.

Thats a lot more plausible than you make it sound cause the Lightning only have (and can only afford) 2 big money guys (Kubina, Boyle) besides those three. Plus again Richards is already making big money and is likely to give a home team discount. If he was a money grabber I'd worry about him leaving but as long as the cap stays at 39 he's sticking around. Also Feaster has said theyre only gonna carry 20 players not the usual 22 or 3 thats on most teams. I'd imagine most teams may do the same to save space. Keep in mind Richards is restricted, not a UFA and I dont think even the Rangers would be willing to lose 5 draft pickas for a player like Richards.

I dug deeper into the stats and I'll concede one thing. Hossa had an excellent 03 postseason even though I dont quite remember that way. Although it seems to be the exception and not the rule for him it cant be overlooked. 04 on the other hand is deceptive yeah he scored 4 points but other than Game 1 he didnt do that much in the series. Game 4 was essentially a blow out even if the score didnt indicate it, and he was nowhere in game 6 or 7? So yeah he had one outstanding postseason but other than he hasnt done much.

Because this: says nothing. He scored points in the playoffs, wonderful. Did he score in crunch time that decided a game, specifically a game 6 or 7, the answer is no.

Fair point but it wont tie them up as much as you would think unless the cap shrinks next year. Those three would take up about 17-19 million in payroll which still leaves about 20 million to fill out the rest of the roster. Keep in mind too that there is going to be a BIG disparity between the top line players and the fourth line players. A lot of people not just on the Lightning but everywhere will be making in and around $450,000. Fair enough. His GAA was less but more importantly his save pct. was actually higher and he started a lot of those games in clumps, and even he faced 3 fewer shots a game he still had to make 5-7 quality saves per night. When he struggled was when his playing time was less consistent, the more work he got, the better he was. Its part of the reason why I think he can be effective as the No.1. Also if an average 91% save percentage leads to a Cup, I'll gladly settle for average. (Khabibulins percentage was .910) Lets simplify this, how many 3rd period Game-tying or GW points?

A couple of points here, yes Detroit and Colorado could pick and choose whoever they wanted but they also knew how to run an organization, unlike the Rangers who would just spend blindly with no foresight. Think about it how many players would say they had bad experiences with those organizations (granted they won multiple Cups but I think the point still stands)... The second point is this there is not gonna be much of a disparity between what the Lightning will offer Brad and what another team would if any. He's not gonna grab that much more and he doesant strike me as a money chaser (like Khabibulin). Remember Khabibulin only signed for $750,000 more most of which he's gonna lose in taxes anyway. They will offer Brad a lot of money to hang around here, and I think he'll take it. Why is it laughable? The guy won 18 games as a back-up with a save percentage over 91% and was VERY close to unseating Khabibulin as the starting goaltender. Do we know whether he can lead a team to the cup of course not. However calling it laughable is a stretch in my opinion.

Lets just say we're not seeing the same player. Yes. He will want to come back for a couple of reasons. First off, the Lightning are fast becoming one of the premier organizations in the NHL. We're becoming the Avalanche, Red Wings, Devils...etc. They take care of their core players. Secondly, Brad and Vinny have been best friends since they were 14 and I think Richards will prefer to stay with his buddy than fly the coupe elsewhere unless the Bolts ridiculously lowball him (which they wont). And when we win a 2nd Stanley Cup with in the next 3 years, I'll be laughing all the way.

Holy shit I have a lot to reply too lets see where I start: Thats good but its not excelling and its precisely why he needs to show me more than one year of solid play. Alexi Yashin says Hi. Ask any Devils fan if they think Arnott is an underpeformer, he didtake a stupid in the finals but made up for it by getting the Cup-clinching goal. Don't get me wrong he is a No.2 center but calling him an underperformer who mails in half the year is outreagous. Hossa is a stat boy period. How many of those points were when the Sens were way ahead or way behind I'd be willing to bet most of them. He wilts just like the rest of that team in a pressure situation The only true clutch player for the Sens is Alffreddson and thats it. Richards will be signed next year and heres why, he's already counting for 3.5 mill against the cap this year. When he does his new deal, it's not gonna increase his salary that much. That was the case in 2000 but not now. Vinny has scored 30+ the last 2 seasons and was outstanding in the playoffs. Richards is more consistent but Vinny could be a 40 goal 90 point wrecking machine this year. Grahame started 29 games and was 18-9-2 with a 2.06 GAA and was VERY close to becoming the No.1 goalie. Although it didnt thrill me at first thought I'm very comfortable with Grahame at the top.

See now that changes the context of the statement. Instead of plainly saying who is better youre saying "If you were to start a team right now..." that changes things significantly. I wanna see Luongo put up those types of numbers with the smaller pads yes he had no D in front of him but he got a lot of help from the pads even if they were technically in line. Again, starting a franchise now changes the context of your statement. Excelled? He was a good minor league not a great one and he's had one solid year, he needs to back it up Vokoun is good and he is underrated. However, he's also VERY streaky and prone to inconsistency. Denis is top of the heap as far as underrated goalies go. Oh and something I forgot to address Heatley and Hossa any way you slice it are essentially the same player. Offensive minded who play one side of the ice and dont give a shit about their own zone. Yes Heatley has more upside but theyre both lazy defesively and I dont see Heatley as a playoff performer either. This also makes your Jason Arnott rip even more ridiculous. Whether he matched his rookie season in Edmonton or not Arnott comes to play every night, and has always shown up at playoff time they either have not or likely wont. He's just someone who over achieved his rookie season and has been consistent since leaving Edmonton. He was never capable of 80-90 points but he does play hard every night.

As usual Max youre wrong, the only guy I would put ahead of Forsberg on this list is Iginla and thats it injuries or no injuries. Vinny could get there soon but STL has only had one great year and putting CROSBY on the list when he's never played an NHL game is absurd. Now he may very well be as good as advertised but lets watch him play first before we make any assumptions. Yeah No. I agree that Khabibibulin is somewhat overrated and inconsistent and there is a definite shot he could flame out in Chicago but right now the only one I would take over Khabibulin is Brodeur, period. I wanna see how Luongo and Turco do with the pad restrictions, since they were big benders of the rules. As for the others: Raycroft is a one year wonder, Denis is underrated but isnt one of the best and Vokoun, give me a break.

Granted a lot of pairings are in flux because of the player movement but that would be far from the best in the league... I've been busy since yesterday afternoon so I havent had to chance to say I'm THRILLED to see the re-signing of Vinny. Marty STL has to accept that he's not gonna see an exorbitant amount paid by the Bolts.
