  1. While the new set is awesome, their production has suffered in the last few weeks as they seem to be framing everything for HD without considering how the SD feed looks.

The HD is great... As someone mentioned above me, they just need to letterbox the SD feed, and it would solve that problem. But the HD feed is fantastic, and the camera angles look really good in HD.

WWE HD is probably the best visually produced HD on television right now.. I give major props to the WWE production team.

  2. I wish they kept or least tweaked the sets for the shows, they are all the same now with the HD sets, there is no difference between the three shows anymore except the ring ropes and aprons. They should bring back the orignial WCW Thunder set from 98, that would be cool

The new HD set is all video.. why bother wasting time creating 3 new sets?? When this one can be customized just by changing the graphics and lightning? They save money and time.

Because World Wrestling Entertainment has more than enough money for three sets, that's why... But, for the sake of argument, let's just say that the exeunt of Bobby Lashley would pay for another set or two if they truly needed them...

True they do.. but maybe they just didn't want to carry 3 sets, and just wanted one huge set for all??

Hell... I don't know, it was their call. so we have to deal with it.

  4. The widescreen makes the ring look bigger. They probably moved the cameras up so they kept the same amount of ring on screen but it still looks bigger.

Yeah.. It does make it look better.

Aside from the macroblocking(which is expected) it looks very good. Hopefully they will work out some the kinks as they broadcast more shows.

  5. I'm excited about the set.

WWE RAW has had the same set for the past 10 years.. even though it had some minor changes, and etc. It's basically been the same basic set that debuted in 98(or was it 97?).

So I'm glad to see the change. This is a very interesting concept... although I'm not surprise, because the WWE will go all out. They have the best production team in the business.. and they will show everyone how HD is done. This new set should also make things easier for the production team, since they only have to carry one set.

Slickster.. the announcers should have some type of monitor upgrade. It would only make sense, since they can see things much better.

  6. Having all 3 brands share a set further dilutes the "3 separate and unique brands" concept, IMO.

True.. but it will be much easier to now do supershows!!

I will not judge this decision until I see this set. I think the production team really thought this out, and probably agreed that this will be the best move when going to HD. Maybe they built one massive set that can be easily customized to fit each brands unique looks?? In the article he did mention that the set would be customized for each brand and have a distinctive look.

WWE has a great production team, and they don't do things sloppy.. so I will wait and see.

  7. Anyone with Directv can get USA and Sci Fi in HD, and its believed the number of directv HD customers is between 2 and 3 million give or take.

CW might be the bigger hold up, as only 11 (mostly major) markets have a CW affiliate in HD.

Not true.. the market I'm in is small(Little Rock) and our CW station is in HD.

    #57 out of 210

You mention only 11(mostly major) had a CW station in HD.. with my market having a CW station. I'm sure there are more than the amount you stated.

  8. Another article that was posted on AVS Forums

Mike Grossman, WWE's Senior Vice President for Television Operations, will be watching every moment of WWE’s week-long debut in high-definition with anticipation – and some nervousness. Those new HD cameras cost a pretty penny, and if, say, WWE Champion Randy Orton grabs one to clock Jeff Hardy with a high-def cranium shot, Grossman might just grit his teeth a little as the high-tech device gets swung.

“That could be a problem,” Grossman replied with a cautious chuckle. “Let’s hope not.”

WWE’s switch to HD required a complete renovation of WWE's production equipment, from the cameras and microphones at ringside to the production truck parked out back. It also necessitated re-creating WWE's production processes from the standard-definition age.

"We went from doing the show the same way for a number of years, in the same truck, to having to reinvent everything," said Duncan Leslie, WWE Vice-President, Technical Events Operations. "All the infrastructure had to change. It's sort of like going from black & white to color."

Such a radical transformation meant not only new HD video cameras, but more powerful and colorful lighting elements. The result? A view of WWE that, until now, you could only get live in the arena, in a front-row seat – a view that has technical crews extremely aware of the tiniest elements.

"There's nowhere to hide," Leslie explained. "Every T-shirt in the audience can be read. Every bead of sweat, every scratch on the canvas is seen. What you see through the HD lens, you'd see with your eyes live."

The crowning jewels of the high-definition renovation are two new state-of-the-art production trucks. WWE worked with NEP Supershooters of Pittsburgh, Pa., to design and build the trucks that replaced the standard-definition vehicle, and will lease a custom truck designed for HD transmission.

Leslie said the new trucks feature miles of cable and more than 100,000 buttons, as well as a massive monitor wall to display the numerous camera feeds. "We're a sporting event, we're a concert” he said. “What we make these trucks do is totally unique [in the industry]."

"Reset" for the set and more

Say goodbye to the iconic Raw TitanTron, as well as the SmackDown fist and mirrors. They’ve seen their last television tapings.

To take full advantage of the high-definition platform, a radically redesigned entrance set will be shared by all three of WWE's signature shows. Exact details regarding the set will remain top-secret until Raw’s is unveiled Monday night. However, a shoot in Florida last November brought all the Superstars together to record the new show openings in HD. Additionally, new intros and graphics for Raw, SmackDown, ECW and pay-per-view events are rumored to feature some 3-D elements.

"There will be several video elements that will be pretty slick,” Grossman asserted. "It will be a whole new show. It's going to be spectacular."

3-D elements?? That would be interesting...

  9. There is another article on WWE.com about the move to HD...

The crew is putting the final touches on incredibly vibrant, high-definition versions of Raw, ECW and SmackDown, including the assembly of a revolutionary entrance set that will be used for all three brands. It's also tweaking the complex lighting and pyrotechnic elements that give each brand's broadcast their distinctive looks, as well as adjusting every Superstar's entrance package to shine in gorgeous WWE HD.

This is very interesting. All three brands will be using the same exact entrance set, but will tweak to match each brands extensive look. I can't wait to see how this looks.. Maybe they are trying to save cash??

    WWE HD

  10. EngadgetHD is reporting that WWE will be broadcasting the 2008 Royal Rumble in High Definition. It is expected that all PPVs will air in HD starting with Royal Rumble '08.

Smackdown will convert to HD starting on January 4 on The CW. Raw and ECW are expected to convert to HD on both USA Network and Sci-Fi Channel respectively at some point later in 2008.

About damn time. Wrestlemania will be my first WWE PPV purchase since 2003. If it wasn't being broadcast in HD.. I wouldn't even bother :D
