  1. I think Danny Hodges would be a nice late round addition. Especially people focusing on the in-ring product.

My favorite cruiserweight is still on the board. Not shocked he's still around given his short wrestling career.

Hodge had a TON of pure talent, both an amateur wrestling and boxing champion. The thing that hurts him is that in his prime, the NWA had a legitimate lightweight world championship. Nothing like that exists anymore.

One name I'd be tempted to add: Joe Louis.

  2. Japanese guys are a tough go. Could a wrestler like Jumbo Tsuruta, Mitsuharu Misawa etc. get over in the States if they wrestled here full time? I think some could individually, but I couldn't see 6-7 of them in the same American promotion. I avoided listing guys who never wrestled here with any regularity.

Regarding the big men and heels, there are a surprising number who are available yet. Even George "the Animal" Steele is out there.

  3. Was that the year the Jap gave up walkoffs in back-to-back games? I felt bad for him.

Korean Byung Hyun Kim. I blame Bob Brenly for the fiasco. Kim threw 61 pitches in Game Four, culminating with Derek Jeter's walkoff home run. Brenly brought back Kim the next night where he again blew a save thanks to Scott Brosius' home run. Kim did not actually surrender the game-winning hit in game five however. Alfonso Soriano won it with an RBI single off reliever Albie Lopez in the 12th inning.

  4. Do the research for me. Was Winfield a better hitter? If not, or if he wasn't a much better hitter, I'd go with Barry because shortstop is a tough position.

Winfield played in a tougher offensive era, so his numbers don't look as good as they would in Larkin's age. Larkin was better at getting on base, Winfield hit for more power. Without adjusting for era, Larkin was actually a better hitter. Winfield comes out ahead slightly when you make the adjustment. On pure ability, Larkin would beat Winfield. The only additional consideration is that Winfield played in 800 more career games.

  5. Pop question: Who was better: Dave Winfield or Barry Larkin?

Really tough question. Both made twelve All-Star games, both won several Gold Glove and silver slugger awards. Winfield generally did better in MVP award balloting but Larkin actually won the award in 1995. I'll give the nod to Larkin, but it is very close.

  6. I got a disgusting amount of phone calls the last few days, and not just from presidential candidates.

Here's something amusing. Check out the bottom race for State House, 113th district. Note the votes from Republicans and compare them with the votes from Democrats. Obviously greater turnout for the democrats due to their presidential primary. The 10th Congressional race is important, as that region has a democratic incumbent but is primarily republican.

  7. I agree with the Gino's decision. I wouldn't do it myself, but if a business wants to make a statement like that, it's their own business. Personally though, I liked a different sign better at an old pizza shop in my area. "Customers who take two or more minutes to order three pizzas or less will be shot." I think that's a sign we can all rally behind.

  8. Dodgers...playoffs, or is the hitting bad enough that they'll be unable to get in?

The Dodgers had substandard production at SS, 3B and CF. They signed Andruw Jones for center, and have top 100 prospects ready at the other two positions. I'd say back end of the rotation is the only big question mark. Unless they make truly stupid personnel moves (namely, blocking productive prospects), they are as good as any pick to win the West.

  9. Sad to see the under on the Braves, but I truely have no idea what to expect out of this season from them. Glavine's back but he's old, Smoltz isn't getting any younger, and we got rid of Renteria and Jones. They keep talking about being a playoff team but I'm fearing right around the .500 mark this season. Thoughts?

I see around 83-86 wins from the Braves, which would keep them in contention right to the end. There's a lot to like. The hitting is there, with stars and solid regulars abound. Two very good pitchers in Tim Hudson and Smoltz, while Chuck James and Tom Glavine can keep them in game. The Braves are a real sleeper team, it would only take one or two breaks to make them division contenders.
