Starcade 97 for all the wrong reasons, as mentioned countless times by others in this thread. Second would be New Blood Rising, they had a chance with Lance Storm being huge but they used him so horribly in the match against Mike Awesome with Carl Oulette as the special referre. After the match they decide to have Bret Hart come out. Why not use Hart as the special ref since he was already there and the show was in Canada? Bash at the Beach 96 for reasons that the company started to do something correct.

Definitely read the Year One, easily the best best Batman story out there. However, do not be afraid to pick up stories outside the bat books that deal with him. My recommendation is JLA: Tower of Babel- deals with issues that somewhat ties into Infinite Crisis, plus it was written by Mark Waid who is no slouch.
