It sounds like Pete Carroll is the front runner for both jobs, which indicates that he learned absolutely nothing from the Bobby Petrino debacle. Arthur Blank seems like a nice enough guy, but all of his misfortune seems to have been brought on by his own poor decisions. When will they realize that success in the college ranks has little to do with actual coaching ability? The success of most programs falls on their ability to recruit top notch talent. Carroll succeeds because he seems like a cool guy and coaches at one of the most desirable locations in the nation. What does that have to do with X's and O's?

This tournament is socksquatch's to lose.

Rickey is on the ballot next year, which will probably hurt the chances of Rice getting in.

Sorry, I misunderstood your statement with regards to the usage of gain.

I've never been less interested in a big time football game. I don't know if it's the uninspring teams, the culmination of a shitty season or the fact that I checked out on the college season weeks ago, but there is nothing here to catch my interest. Seems like most of my friends feel the same way too. First time we haven't gotten together for a BCS Champioship party in at least 5 years.

Oakland is only two years removed from an ALCS appearance and finished with a better record than the Chicago White Sox last year, yet they have (correctly) decided that they need to punt the next two years and rebuild for the future. Chicago is a last place team that just sold off every piece of decent talent they have because they have deluded themselves into thinking that they have a chance of competing. This is why Beane is considered a genius, and Williams a bumbling idiot.

I'd rank Chamberlain above Hughes. 135 Ks in 88 minor league innings is very impressive. I'd still put Hughes ahead of Chamberlain. Phil Hughes is younger and has more of a track record of success in both the major and minor leagues. He doesn't have any of the weight or injury concerns that plagued Joba as recently as a year ago. I think Chamberlain may have better pure stuff, but Hughes has the better chance to succeed for longer.

Baseball America, as a publication, has always favored guys with high ceilings. Being close to the majors doesn't really score you extra points if you're only projected to be an average everyday player. Ian Kennedy may be major league ready, but is only projected to be a 4th starter in the majors and has limited upside beyond that. Tabata and Jackson are considered to have All-Star potential, even if the chances they make it to that level are slim. It's really just a matter of how they evaluate talent.

You can check the Baseball America website for top ten lists (they post a new team every two days), but I'd recommend getting the Prospect Handbook if you have any interest at all in minor league prospects.

From Baseball America, the top ten prospects for the Yankees and Red Sox. As I mentioned earlier, both are considered top 5 systems, which should be a scary thing for the rest of the American League. Yankees Prospects Red Sox Prospects

I polished off the works of Chuck Klosterman over the holidays and most of Watchmen as well. I agree with the general sentiment regarding Klosterman, but as a fan of hair metal and dated pop culture references, I thoroughly enjoy his stuff. Not something I would necessarily recommend to anyone, but a good way to kill a couple hours (I read IV, Sex, Drugs.., and Killing Yourself... over a two day stretch). As for Watchmen, I don't think it's my cup of tea. I didn't really enjoy Dark Knight Returns either, so maybe the graphic novel medium isn't my bag.

Oh, and Matt Clement signed with the Cardinals. I doubt he ever fully makes it back, but it is Duncan and the Cardinals, so maybe we should pencil him in for 15 wins and 3.50 ERA.

It's an okay lineup, but they are going to be dreadful on the defense/pitching side and they have literally nothing left in the farm system to make improvements. A little luck on their side and they may finish third. Most likely they finish dead last. Santos is young, but has top of the rotation stuff. Gonzalez is a back-end starter, but should be ready to contribute later this year. Sweeney is just one year removed from being a good prospect, but the power has to show up if he's going to be anything more than a 4th outfielder. The Sox sure love trading Gio Gonzalez too. That's the fourth stop in two years (Sox - Phillies - Sox - A's).
-
Nick Swisher dealt to the White Sox: That's a good haul for Swisher, but I don't understand why they'd trade him. I guess Beane is hellbent on rebuilding their abysmal farm system. I'd fully expect Street and Blanton to get shipped out, too. Really no point in keeping those guys if you are going for a full-on rebuild.

How did you find out that wrestling was not "real"?
Cheech Tremendous replied to majormayhem1's topic in General Wrestling
The funniest thing about the whole is wrestling fake debate is that I used to think it was more fake than it actually is. Up until I got the internet in the late 90s, I thought everything that was shown on tv was scripted. And I mean everything. I thought matches were choreographed and practiced multiple times before being shown on tv, that moves were inflicted with no pain at all, interviews and promos were written and rehearsed, commentators read from a script and storylines were planned out a year in advance like a season of a television show. I don't really remember ever thinking that it was real. -

Per Jim Callis' chat yesterday, the top five farm systems in MLB, according to Baseball America: 1. Tamap Bay Rays 2. Boston Red Sox 3. Cincinnati Reds 4. Texas Rangers 5. New York Yankees The remaining teams won't be revealed until the Handbook is realeased next month. This looks about right, but I'd probably have the Reds ranked first, and I am unfamiliar with the Rangers' system.
