WWE General Discussion - December 2008

The Maryse injury is on WO/F4W's Raleigh house show post. I'm guessing it wasn't reported as a news item because Meltzer or Alvarez thought it could have been a work. http://www.f4wonline.com/content/view/7891/124/

Singletary was announced to 49er players post-game as the new head coach, interim tag removed.

    WWE SmackDown - December 26, 2008

Not a big fan of the beatdown either. The Divas segment seems the rare case of the booking being good on paper but its execution just not working out at all.

WWE General Discussion - December 2008

Just speculation on my part but it could be R-Truth's previous criminal record at issue. MVP once alluded to needing special arrangements to get into Canada because of that concern.

    Predictions for 2009

Paul London was a great worker. Where is he now? Kingston's push has largely stalled out on Raw, he was much better off on ECW. As for Cryme Tyme, both men have been over, that didn't stop them from being released the first time. My list of firings is in the belief that WWE will have to make major cuts in this economy, the likes of which we have never seen before. If you have such a problem with my predictions though, please make up your own.

    Predictions for 2009

    - WWE will find its year marked by continuing efforts to mitigate the effects of a severe recession. - The Cyber Sunday PPV will be dropped. - Raw and Smackdown will have an on-air talent exchange agreement. Wrestlers will still be identified by primary brand but the brand division will be rendered all but meaningless. - There will still be separate Raw and Smackdown brand singles champions. The tag team and women's/divas belts will both be unified. House shows will be combined into Raw/Smackdown supershow events. - Aside from PPVs, WWE will move to only one television taping per week. Both Raw and Smackdown will be taped on Mondays. Smackdown airings will move to Thursdays. - ECW will be ended by mutual agreement of WWE & Sci-Fi. Tommy Dreamer will win the final ECW title match. WWE Films, WWE Kids magazine & WWEKids.com will also be folded. - Todd Grisham will take Jim Ross' slot on Smackdown. Jim Ross will be drafted back to Raw. Michael Cole & Matt Striker will be fired. - WWE will buy a share of Ring of Honor to keep it afloat, using it as an informal developmental promotion. Bryan Danielson will move to WWE in the process. - The Diva Search will be revived as a reality show on MyNetworkTV. - John Morrison will win Money in the Bank. The Miz will be jealous and cost Morrison his title match. Morrison will later become Intercontinental champion. - MVP's losing streak will go on until faced with a career threatening match. MVP will win that match, launching an extended winning streak. - Jesse will turn against Festus, the shock of which will leave Festus in permanent "on" mode. - Kizarny will wrestle less than five times on television before his gimmick is dropped. - The Legacy membership will extend to both major brands, reaching a total membership of double digits until Randy Orton disbands the faction in disgust. - Beth Phoenix will wrestle Santino Marella at WrestleMania. Beth will win. Marella will recover to become the next to last ECW champion. - Jack Swagger: United States champion - Triple H will be drafted back to Raw and become its top heel. John Cena will be drafted back to Smackdown and become its top face. Both men will be their respective brand champions at the end of the year. - JBL will become the new (kayfabe) owner of WWE, triggering a feud with a babyface Mr. McMahon for control of the company. Vickie Guerrero and JBL will become a storyline couple. - Undertaker will not be WWE or World champion. - CM Punk will be on the receiving end of a Stone Cold Stunner. - Jeff Hardy will be assessed his third strike only to be saved by WWE's new four strike policy. - Brooke Burke will appear at WrestleMania. Tribute to the Troops will be moved to Afghanistan. - More firings: JTG & Shad, Jamie Noble, Hurricane Helms, Kofi Kingston, Vladimir Kozlov, Kung Fu Naki, Chavo Guerrero, Bam Neely, Boogeyman, Hornswoggle, Primo, Kevin Thorn, Paul Burchill, Jesse, Manu, Kizarny, Curt Hawkins, Zack Ryder, Tony Atlas, Katie Lea Burchill, Candice Michelle, Melina, Michelle McCool, Jillian.

    WWE Tribute to the Troops

I watched it, though it's doubtful many others did the same outside of a regular WWE slot. Given that, the Big Show "turn" was probably done just for the troops' benefit and won't stick in normal continuity.

Paul Johnson coaching Georgia Tech is sort of like having Navy in the ACC already.

WWE General Discussion - December 2008

Only problem is that in such scenarios, the title usually flips back on the same tour. WWE isn't running any further house shows till after Christmas.

    Sports Economic Thread

Aside from PR or PC reasoning, WNBA teams conveniently fill arena dates during the NBA off-season. With more WNBA teams becoming independently owned apart from their NBA counterparts, we'll get a better read on whether that league can truly survive. Anyway, the econmony should really take the biggest hit on sports organizations that more heavily depend on sponsorships, especially automotive-related sponsorships. Think NASCAR, F1 and the like.

    Major Shakeup In ROH

I'm not close enough to know if the situation is that dire. That said, a booker insulating himself from outside input is generally not a good idea.

More Future Endeavours - Dykstra, Lena, Elijah

Don't know if WWE does this but some companies deliberately time such things to get costs off the books before the start of the new year. Bottom line, if Snitsky was going to be fired anyway, it was probably better to do it in a clean break so he can get himself set up for life post-WWE.

    The feds got Blagojevich

The problem is that despite everything, Blagojevich still has the power to pick Obama's successor. Whether anyone would actually want to accept such a tainted appointment is another matter, of course.

    WWE Tribute to the Troops

The number of matches is really incidental on this show. I'd love to know if WWE paid to transport the TitanTron itself though considering its current cost-cutting mode.

    The Dark Knight

Variety reports "The Dark Knight" to be rereleased in theaters January 23. TDK is just short of $1 billion worldwide.

    The College Football Thread 12/3 - 12/6

In fairness, it's better this way for the people most interested in the games. All the FCS/I-AA quarterfinals were already preassigned to ESPN's syndication unit, presumably so they could be seen in the local markets of interest. Some in-market fans without access to ESPNU and ESPN Classic would lose out with broadcasts there.

How would Triple H have a rematch clause against Edge? He wasn't signed to wrestle Edge in the first place.

Georgia Tech proves itself the best ACC team just in time for Virginia Tech to knock it out of title contention... and ten ACC teams will qualify for bowls. Jeez.

    The College Football Thread 11/25 - 11/29

Assuming Clemson holds on against South Carolina, the ACC will have anywhere from 9 to 11 eligible bowl teams. The ACC wouldn't then want its bowl allotment reduced to 8 spots.

    This week in the NBA

Let's start with a firing. The injury-plagued 1-10 Wizards have fired Eddie Jordan as coach, reports the Washington Post. Ed Tapscott to take over as interim coach.
  22. Until we know if it's real or a work, it's hard to give any sort of response to it. Someone wake up Meltzer or Scherer.

    Cyber Sunday - October 26 2008

Batista certainly can work, he's a more than acceptable big man wrestler when properly motivated. The man's problem is that his head has not always been in the game. Let's see if he can keep it there this time.
