Not alot but I do think that some groups of people do follow sheepishly after what the celebrities are doing. For example, in Brazil there's a television personality named Xuxa she hosts both a Saturday morning cartoon block for children, and then on Sunday afternoon a more adult centered talk show (basically all the kids who grew up watching her are now adults), she got pregnant and people told me they were trying to get pregnant to be like Xuxa. Teens, women in their twenties... women in their fourties, just to be like a celeb. I find people wandering around in the States that do the same thing to a point. They'll vote according to whatever group they've identified themselves as, and a small percent of people will follow a random celebrity. Not alot of people, but enough to be annoying. This is all I was really trying to say. There are enough people, particularly in my generation and younger, that will follow whatever they perceive to be vogue. My apologies for the lame savior joke, but someone really did make that picture...

The Auto industry is starting to catch up, but the problem is that they've had no government assistance at all in the last 8 years (I'm not counting "boosting car loans", since that barely addresses the problems. That is a band-aid on a bullet wound). Bush's first meeting with them was last year, and lasted all of 30 minutes. I agree on better gas efficiency (I don't know where you've heard your rumor from, but it's simply not possible for the auto industry to just "start" making gas-guzzlers at the drop of a hat, when it's only been all of two months with low gas) and such, but they need some actual assistance. At the very least, their package more directly helps the people than the bailout to AIG did. Supply side economists would argue that no industry should have to be 'supported' by the government, and if it's not self-sufficient, keeping it on life support would only prolong and deepen the resulting market correction once it fully fails. I'm not sure which side is correct in this argument, to be honest...

They are certainly capable of it even if it isn't the entire truth. If you're inferring that people should blame Bush for the economic slide, but would blame Obama instead, I disagree. It's vogue to blame Bush; people will still follow that along.

I hope this diminishes some of the grousing about the Republicans being an ideological monolith, particularly your grousing. It seems like the goal now (in some quarters at least) is to actually become one, though. I mean, shit, Rush Limbaugh was babbling about running the "bourgeoisie" out of the party a couple weeks ago. There's a not insignificant number of people out there who think Bush failed because he wasn't right-wing enough and that the key to winning next time is to run even harder to the right and purge the GOP of all those disloyal elitist intellectuals like David Brooks and Peggy Noonan who were oh so mean to poor widdle Sarah. A lot of Republicans blame Bush for taxing like a conservative and spending like a liberal.

*sigh* That's not the reason. The reason for Republicans' speaking out against Obama is his VOTING RECORD, or at least, what little he has. As much as the campaign made a big deal out of McCain voting with his party's president 90% of the time... imagine that... a party voting the same way...... he voted Democratic literally 100% of the time. That's not hope, change OR working together. It's just a neatly packaged partisan using catchphrases that our younger generations, and apparently you, fall for like dominoes.

Obama had a stand on the issues? Seriously, I know someone who said they were voting for Obama, and I asked "So you approve of that refundable tax credit he wants for health care" and got an immediate "Absolutely, great idea." I didn't have the heart to tell them that was part of McCain's proposed health care plan. HA! Question: Does this mean we'll be repealing affirmative action?
