Agreed! The transition from "Denise speaks like normal girl" to "Denise is insensitive and speaks with a kinda low voice" occurred during this episode, when she had already been behaving in an insensitive manner from the beginning of the season.

I'm in on it. And it's not a funny joke by any stretch of the imagination.

Ben Folds - Way to Normal

Is that a real lyric? "The Bitch Went Nuts" Artist: Ben Folds The bitch went nuts She stabbed my basketball And the speakers to my stereo She called me cunt But nothing prepared me for What I found when I came home Oh and I Make my own bed I lie in it You lie in yours (you lie, you lie in yours) But they want more They're at my door With torches Please leave me alone You know just shut it just shut it just shut it The bitch went nuts She photoshopped my face (shopped his face) On to every boy who'd done her wrong Then she burned them telepathically Onto the brains of all her embittered drones Oh now Now they want more They're at my door With torches, scores and scores and scores To settle with themselves Who would have thought I'd scorned them all They've got a doll of me They're burning, they're burning, they're burnin Their own memories Why do they all know? (Go!) The bitch went nuts y'all But everyone said she might Oh, holy fuckin' shit Seriously now Now they want more they're at my door with torches, scores and scores You would have thought I'd scorned them all They've got a doll of me They're burnin' Why do they all know? (Go!) As a pianist, I'm still required to be a Folds fan -- his live shows are incredible (I've been to two, one as a headliner and one opening for John Mayer). I do take his new albums with a grain of salt, though.

I need to vent about Sarah Palin.

Not alot but I do think that some groups of people do follow sheepishly after what the celebrities are doing. For example, in Brazil there's a television personality named Xuxa she hosts both a Saturday morning cartoon block for children, and then on Sunday afternoon a more adult centered talk show (basically all the kids who grew up watching her are now adults), she got pregnant and people told me they were trying to get pregnant to be like Xuxa. Teens, women in their twenties... women in their fourties, just to be like a celeb. I find people wandering around in the States that do the same thing to a point. They'll vote according to whatever group they've identified themselves as, and a small percent of people will follow a random celebrity. Not alot of people, but enough to be annoying. This is all I was really trying to say. There are enough people, particularly in my generation and younger, that will follow whatever they perceive to be vogue. My apologies for the lame savior joke, but someone really did make that picture...

John Legend, anyone? Will.i.am, if he counts as a celebrity? Just two examples... Although, come to think of it: Heidi and Spencer from The Hills endorsed McCain. *sigh*

I need to vent about Sarah Palin.

and make art like this doesn't inspire me to believe in my country, but honestly, it fucking freaks me out. I thought we were above this cult of personality type shit in the United States. I hope he does well for the sake of our country, but the guy is just another politician for fuck's sake. My thought on that picture: even atheists need a savior, apparently. And anyone trying to argue that the conservative supporters of Palin were less educated politically than Obama supporters need to take a look around. It was vogue to support Obama... everyone did it, even celebrities that have no idea what the hell is going on. I know SO many idiots that were supporting Obama. All they cared about was that it was cool and he would "change" things; they had no idea what his platform was. At least conservatives heard "lower taxes" and "gun rights" before they jumped on the Palin bandwagon; all Obama supporters heard was "change" and "hope," two nondescript items. Just saying...

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

Google mocks my failed dreams Eh, writing is worthless as a profession. Unless you're planning to become a novelist, which you probably are since you're the most urbane dude here and you read a lot of books. But a degree in professional writing? That's bullshit and it won't get you anywhere. Well, scratch that. Won't get ME anywhere. I suppose going through the rigors of higher education will give you the benefit of more knowledge. But that piece of paper won't take you anywhere. (Yeah, I know you wanted to go to grad school. But just graduating once should mean something, shouldn't it? More and more I'm feeling like my bachelor's degree is worth about as much as passing middle school.) I'm a college graduate and my parents want me to take a job at a fucking gas station so I can pay my car insurance. Don't they know my friends are going to laugh at me? Byron the Bulb, are you black? Czech thought you were and I was like "no way, that dude's totally white." Maybe in his world, refined Caucasoids can't appreciate Weezy F. Baby, but I know what's up. Man, I have a degree in music. That's far more worthless than a journalism degree. And I'm also working in a dying star of an industry (retirement investments).

"The Office of the President Elect"? WTF is that? There's no office of the President Elect...

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

The Auto industry is starting to catch up, but the problem is that they've had no government assistance at all in the last 8 years (I'm not counting "boosting car loans", since that barely addresses the problems. That is a band-aid on a bullet wound). Bush's first meeting with them was last year, and lasted all of 30 minutes. I agree on better gas efficiency (I don't know where you've heard your rumor from, but it's simply not possible for the auto industry to just "start" making gas-guzzlers at the drop of a hat, when it's only been all of two months with low gas) and such, but they need some actual assistance. At the very least, their package more directly helps the people than the bailout to AIG did. Supply side economists would argue that no industry should have to be 'supported' by the government, and if it's not self-sufficient, keeping it on life support would only prolong and deepen the resulting market correction once it fully fails. I'm not sure which side is correct in this argument, to be honest...

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

They are certainly capable of it even if it isn't the entire truth. If you're inferring that people should blame Bush for the economic slide, but would blame Obama instead, I disagree. It's vogue to blame Bush; people will still follow that along.

The same context wasn't applied to McCain's voting record, was it? Panthermatt still rarely posts anything other than tu quoques. I know. I'm disagreeing, so I'm obviously intellectually inferior.

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

I hope this diminishes some of the grousing about the Republicans being an ideological monolith, particularly your grousing. It seems like the goal now (in some quarters at least) is to actually become one, though. I mean, shit, Rush Limbaugh was babbling about running the "bourgeoisie" out of the party a couple weeks ago. There's a not insignificant number of people out there who think Bush failed because he wasn't right-wing enough and that the key to winning next time is to run even harder to the right and purge the GOP of all those disloyal elitist intellectuals like David Brooks and Peggy Noonan who were oh so mean to poor widdle Sarah. A lot of Republicans blame Bush for taxing like a conservative and spending like a liberal.
  14. panthermatt7

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

*sigh* That's not the reason. The reason for Republicans' speaking out against Obama is his VOTING RECORD, or at least, what little he has. As much as the campaign made a big deal out of McCain voting with his party's president 90% of the time... imagine that... a party voting the same way...... he voted Democratic literally 100% of the time. That's not hope, change OR working together. It's just a neatly packaged partisan using catchphrases that our younger generations, and apparently you, fall for like dominoes.

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

Obama had a stand on the issues? Seriously, I know someone who said they were voting for Obama, and I asked "So you approve of that refundable tax credit he wants for health care" and got an immediate "Absolutely, great idea." I didn't have the heart to tell them that was part of McCain's proposed health care plan. HA! Question: Does this mean we'll be repealing affirmative action?

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

from http://corner.nationalreview.com/ CORRECTION (imagine that, the National Review got something wrong) Real exit poll results for Prop 8 here; http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#CAI01p1 Spoiler: I'm genuinely surprised. Regarding the spoiler: I'm not. When it comes to those issues, blacks do have a tendency to vote conservative especially in regards to family issues. Many blacks also tend to be against abortion as well. I know I've been a harsh critic and am concerned for the way we're going as a country, but I do extend my congrats to Obama. He was very classy last night and so was McCain in his speech. And I think Obama seemed to send a message with the way he talked to the extreme leftist Democrats to not go overboard and start overreaching. If they start doing that, people are going to not stand for it. I also found it amazing how closer things really seemed to be. Of the swing states that shifted from red to blue, only about one or two counties provided the shift, especially in Indiana, Florida, Ohio, and Virginia. So I would say in football terms, Obama wins 27-13, but the game was actually closer than the final score indicated. I did get a chuckle out of when I voted. Iowa mentions in its state constitution that people that are "Idiot and insane" are not allowed to vote. They want to change the wording to say that people that are mentally incompetent can't vote. I had a Carlos Mencia moment there and if I could would have written in to switch it to people that are "DEE DEE DEE!" can't vote. Another thought I had...if Obama was to reach across the aisle for a couple of Cabinet members. If he wanted to lay the smack down on Wall Street and these CEO's who ripped people off and then got golden parachutes, I'd go for Giuliani for Attorney General. He was a bad-ass as a lawyer in New York who had the Mafia scared to deal with him. Plus, definitely have Powell as Chairman of the JCS. Holy cow, you're from IA? I grew up an hour south of Des Moines, and graduated from UNI. Crazy. I have nothing to add on the subject matter... just noticed the Iowa notes.

    Barack Obama's Inauguration

I voted Obama for two reasons: 1.) Palin 2.) The Democrats now control the White House and both houses of Congress. There's no more excuses now; time for the Dems to put up or shut up.

    Campaign 2008

I can see how they would be. I'm usually pretty ironclad on my opinions, but I literally decided while at the booth. I had my pen hovering above McCain/Palin... ehhh... then Obama/Biden... ehhh... then decided I just couldn't vote for any ticket featuring Palin, and went with Obama/Biden.' I had all my other ballot choices figured out (Norm Coleman over Al Franken, Erik Paulson over Ashwin Media).

You're taking a hindsight view. Using a basis of "If the U.S. would have never done this, then..." does not fix the present issue. I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment, just the "solution." I agree, which is why it is important to put these situations into proper context so we can come to a viable solution. Agreed. How, then, would we solve our international relations with Islamic groups, state and otherwise?

People that I know. They thought the Palin effigy was hilarious, but decried the Obama version as soon as it occurred. I can understand the points about it being different due to a southern state. When I visited Nashville four weeks ago, the differences in racial attitude were incredible.

    Campaign 2008

Women who were accused of being witches were hung and burned in the same fashion way before the KKK was using it against black people. So I guess you're wrong. Link to a blog with a good opinion on the matter Is anyone here defending that effigy? I thought not. I think he's just attemting to point out that they're wrong on the same level. One is on public property, yes, and that's obviously why it's been acted upon. But, you're missing the larger point. People reacted to the Obama effigy with outrage, after reacting to the Palin effigy with laughter. That's a ridiculous double standard.

    Campaign 2008

Let's review... I can see you've put plenty of thought into your vote. Like I said, I decided about a week ago. I think that means that he decided a week ago, THEN read the Seal story. Frankly, if Seal leaves the country, that's fantastic. Heidi Klum, though, is a different story altogether.
