considering the location where you ate, a chain like that was probably your best bet for food. never, ever stop anywhere in valdosta, for any reason.

    Makin' Playlists

my girlfriend has a strong bias against bob dylan, despite the fact that she has never listened to one of his albums and loves some of his songs. so i took it upon myself to make her a dylan sampler: 1. don't think twice, it's all right 2. like a rolling stone 3. one of us must know (sooner or later) 4. went to see the gypsy 5. i want you 6. absolutely sweet marie 7. one too many mornings 8. subterranean homesick blues 9. to ramona 10. father of night 11. you're gonna make me lonesome when you go 12. tangled up in blue 13. motorpsycho nitemare 14. idiot wind 15. it's all over now, baby blue (from 'live 1966') obviously not all his best stuff, but my main goal was songs that could stand well on their own, & that were easy to listen to. i think i succeeded for the most part, but in hindsight i would've taken off "it's all over now, baby blue" and "to ramona." maybe put in "i don't believe you" instead.

    Shitty Scenes in Great Movies

Personally I've always found the Broadway Melody number in Singin in the Rain to be gratuitous and tedious. I know what Kelly was going for there, something similar to the Lullaby of Broadway in Gold Diggers of 1935, but the thing is the big number climaxed that earlier movie (and is the main thing it has to recommend it) while the Broadway number in Singin in the Rain stops the narrative we actually care about dead in its tracks. ^nicely said. i've found that the sequence grows on you quite a bit with repeated viewings, but it can't touch the absolute joy of any other number in the movie.

    What did you eat today?

breakfast - bowl of frosted flakes, then an asiago bagel from panera lunch - 2 mini pita pizzas (2 mini pitas, spaghetti sauce, pepperoni & cheese, broiled in the toaster oven) dinner - 3 turkey soft tacos, tortilla chips and somewhere in there i had half a box of cheez-its.

    Boardloaf

even though i hate spinach, i tried making some roasted spinach leaves with salt & pepper in olive oil, and they turned out quite good. if you keep them in the oven on 400 for about 5 minutes, they get greasy and crispy, like really thin chips, and basically don't taste much like spinach anymore. i intend to experiment over the next couple weeks to see if they can hold different flavors, like spices or lemon zest.

oops, nevermind. a google search reveals that the debt always dies with the debtor, unless there is a surviving co-signer. my fear has been lifted.

    Pizza in NYC

best i ever had was at arturo's on houston street, but i never ventured off manhattan. it's sort of a weird place though, they let people with their dogs in, and the tables are closer together than most places. a friend of mine told me she went there once, and this lady at a table next to her had a small dog that was sitting on the floor between them. my friend was able to ignore it until the dog jumped up and laid in her lap. rather than helping, the dog's owner just kind of gave an "aw, isn't that cute" look.

well, that implies that he went through some phase of adulthood, which never really happened. he was a deadbeat and an alcoholic until i was 11, and he's never really learned how to be fiscally or personally responsible. he seems very happy whenever i talk to him, so more power to him; he just better not leave me any debt when he dies.

i was a bastard child. my mom is currently living with a wealthy retired sound engineer, and my dad is living by himself renting large adult toys that he can't really afford to (a harley & a corvette). i last talked to him about a month ago & he says he's bought my birthday present, he just hasn't mailed it out yet. my birthday was march first.

  18. i'd like for 'earl' to win this year. 'the office' has been getting heaps and heaps of attention while 'earl' has just kept quietly putting out solid show after solid show. i'd say they put together a better overall package this year, and the finale was tons better.

    Book recommendations

anthony bourdain - 'the nasty bits'. read more or less the whole thing in 2 days during my downtime at work. i have no interest in either food or travel writing, but i still find bourdain compulsively readable. he way he writes is very assured and just really really...good. not nearly as good as 'kitchen confidential', mostly because the pieces are too short for him to really get on a roll, but great brain candy.

if justin timberlake's album can be cool to the indie crowd, kelly should be treated like a goddess, since her voice is much better and i can listen to 'breakaway' all the way through without dying of boredom. the new one seems to have a much stronger last half than first half, which i don't think i've ever heard in a pop album. the first half is more or less 'breakaway redux', only with a lot more guitars--pulling out all the dramatic song segment stops and vocal tricks, trying to kick out some singles, which can get pretty monotonous. the last half is pretty loose and adventurous, with "irvine" containing a somber guitar part almost ripped off from "exit music for a film" with clarkson trying to sound like chan marshall. the amazing thing is that it works. and it's even got a secret track on the end, deliberately scratchy to sound like a demo! and there's a lyric in it that sounds like "woke up this morning, made a mess in my mouth," which, to me, conjures up glorious images of kelly clarkson somehow accidentally shitting in her own mouth. the lyrics are uniformly abysmal, but hey, it's a pop record.
