it looks like they were struck with rocking inspiration from watching the "night on bald mountain" segment of fantasia.

"It's All Coming Back To Me Now"

i'm checking out the video for "making love out of nothing at all." this is great. i cannot believe air supply had this many hits. UPDATE: and i just watched the video for "the one that you love," to much the same effect. the highness that what's-his-name gets on the key change in that song is insane.

for some reason 'aquemini' became my album of choice during my summer in new york when i would go to hudson park all the time. it's just really appropriate for sweaty swaggering hairless dudes in thongs, i don't really know why.

final shots: magnolia touch of evil the 400 blows say anything far from heaven 'breathless' barely missed it. i'm a big fan of looking at the camera.

    Hot Fuzz

saw it last night. not as funny as 'shaun' but still very good stuff. it starts pretty clunky, but it keeps getting better & better all the way to the end (which is EXTREMELY rare for a comedy, especially one that clocks in at over 2 hours). they got the michael bay aesthetic DOWN. it took me so long to figure out why they were doing these rapid-fire cutaways between every single scene and why the sound effects were so big and intrusive during the most banal shit, but once i got the joke it was fantastic. anyone who's irritated by the michael bay aesthetic should check it out.

    Your Five Favorite Anything

male vocalist performances: 1. freddy mercury - "somebody to love" 2. frank sinatra - "can't we be friends?" 3. jeff buckley - "the way young lovers do" 4. roy orbison - "crying" 5. meat loaf - "i'd do anything for love (but i won't do that)" no real order to that, except number 1.

i thought the happy feet version of "somebody to love" was quite good.

    American Idol

she said she was a quiet baby. people interpreted that as a reference to "silent birth." it's a bit of a stretch.

All covers albums are generally mistakes.

twilight singers - 'she loves you'. a little wanky with the coltrane stuff, but by & large very good and original work on excellent song choices. "summertime" and "too tough to die" are especially awesome.

Where were you when you first heard "MacArthur Park?"

what kind of dumb shit would lose his recipe right after he put so much time into baking the cake? didn't he think, at some point during this long and arduous baking process, "wow, i should probably put this recipe in a safe place somewhere"? seriously.

    American Idol

gina singing "smile" with tears in her eyes is the saddest thing i've ever seen on this show. that should be a lesson to all future contestants to never choose a bittersweet song; the irony might just be too much for you to take. on the plus side, she gradually composed herself and seemed to sincerely enjoy it by the end, which turned out to be the most genuine moment of the season so far.

    My Humps

well, lords of acid are trying to be funny and black-eyed peas are a joke, so there's really no mystery to liking the former more than the latter. holy shit that "8 easy steps" song is atrocious. and the mismatched mouth is creepy.

    My Humps

if you just change the word "humps" to "cunt," that would seriously make a stellar lords of acid song. that's the only change you'd have to make. keep the shitty sing-song female vocal style, keep the shitty dance beat; just change that one word and it'll sound exactly like lords of acid.

i also have a soft spot for those soaring, heartrending melodies she does. 'supposed former infatuation junkie' was in regular rotation in my car during my senior year of high school. that's quite a good album. i wish i hadn't gotten rid of it.

    Blades of Glory

will arnett was indeed great. i'm struggling to come to terms with the fact that amy poehler is just...not that great. speaking of amy poehler...i had a friend in new york who was the one to hold the bucket of truth at the "upright citizens brigade" shows on sunday nights. amy poehler would always refer to her by name at the end of the show, and my heart would flutter that someone i knew worked for amy poehler. she also wrote local reviews of plays for offoffonline.com. if i do a google search of her name, it takes me to a bunch of reviews she did. but if i google my own name, none of the tsm reviews i did come up. she's so much more famous than me. what the fuck.

    My Humps

wow. i'm probably a bigger fan of these elaborate jokes than i should be (i also really like ben folds's "bitches ain't shit"), but still, way to commit to your premise. considering the whole thing was probably thrown together in an afternoon, that was way better than it had any right to be. the drama part was especially enjoyable. bravo, to someone i always assumed had no sense of humor.

am i the only one who prefers the american version of 'rubber soul' to the british one? there's something about the british version that seems uneven and doesn't quite gel.
