'snakes on a train' was robbed last year.

weird things are happening to the oscars. i could totally ignore them till last year, when they let a completely un-prestige picture-like movie win & which was one of my favorite movies of that year. and they did the same thing this year. are they trying to make me start caring, only to hurt me later? i love the fact that 2 bad-ass 90s directors got to compete with each other (danny boyle & david fincher). i love that david fincher tried his hardest to make an acceptably prestige picture that had "year-end award-worthy movie" written all over it in excecutives' cum, and danny boyle beat him just by doing exactly the kind of thing he felt like doing. and i love the fact that 'la maison en petits cubes' beat pixar in the "best animated short" category. awesome little movie that almost made me cry.

this dove pretty quickly from "french new wave" into "movies with directors who are european."

since music is subjective, music is fairly useless.

My favorite section is, "How To Increase Your Word Power." That thing is really, really...really...good.

this is a pretty recent development, but i can't stand magazine writing now and its stupid mix of superficial reportage, bad jokes, and pithy one-sentence excuses for arguments. every sentence just screams "deadlines! space constraints!" and it leads to all sorts of bad shortcuts. i've tried in the last year to read 2 full-length books by magazine writers: http://www.amazon.com/Accidental-Revolutio...8192&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Joystick-Nation-Vide...8227&sr=8-1 and i couldn't finish either of them, because the sentences were so compressed and dumbed down that it was impossible for the authors to sound like they were making an insightful point, even when they were making an insightful point.

that is just beautiful.

this will end badly.

trainspotting>>>>>>requiem for a dream i'm pretty sure i've said that before, but it's worth repeating.

i can see where they'd be coming from. zeppelin always had a problem with consistency in putting their albums together, and although III doesn't have ballbreakingly memorable numbers, it flows pretty well and has some kind of coherence to it.

that's what david fincher gets for turning into a pussy.

better "hopeless sad bastard" album of unending depression: 'nebraska' or 'plastic ono band'?

yeah, obama's senate record never gave any indication that he would reverse any of this. i believe he voted for the renewal of the patriot act as well. it just didn't come up last year because clinton and mccain (if i remember correctly) had a record identical to his. booooooooooooo.

made even better by the fact that they just had oprah on the show. synergy eats its own tail!

well, if we all started wearing rocawear sweatshirts and fake chains i think we would only look more white. white people really only have so much to work with.

i can't say with 100% certainty that i wouldn't have been tempted by the prospect of $1 women's underwear.

almost all testosterone-centric topics (i don't know if people have yet noticed i'm a bit of a fop and a snob), but most of all football. this makes every native-born pittsburgher totally alien to me. i like this city, but jesus do these people act like abject retarded skullfuckers for months at a time. the city i live in is going to the super bowl against the city i was born in, and i could not give less of a shit about that. i'm rooting for the cardinals this year, just to be a dickhead. tattoos too. i don't want to hear about the kind of work such-and-such on the southside does, i don't want to hear how much it cost, i don't want to hear how many sessions it took to fill in, i don't want to hear what the inspiration for the design was. and don't call it a "piece." i do like people around me talking shop about their jobs. the more specific, the better. and office politics fascinate me.

he's drawing a lot of lincoln comparisons lately. he's been studying up on lincoln's decision-making apparently, and the gettysburg address is supposedly the inspiration for his inaugural speech. just because of the weird media coverage he's getting, he might end up being the first postmodern president (i.e., the first president entirely thought of as a mix of other presidents who have come before him). 3 weeks ago, he was FDR. now he's lincoln. maybe in 6 months he can be truman.

pollan talks about this too: that our spending habits as americans (and i guess canadians) are such that we feel cheated if we spend more than bare minimum on food, so that we can spend it on luxuries. what would that extra 7 bucks go to? i mean, you're well-off enough to have a computer and internet, so i'm guessing that you're not in dire need of saving every single dollar possible just to pay the heating bill and rent. it's about rearranging the priorities so that food actually amounts to a genuine investment that you're making in yourself. would you go to the gym with the cheapest membership if it had old equipment that broke all the time and no hot water in the showers? this sounds like the ultimate warrior.

part of my routine now is to watch 'wheel of fortune' and 'jeopardy' every weeknight. and i like it. i'm pretty sure this makes me sixty.
