    Best Album(s) of the Year

Honestly, I've never owned a Bjork album, but I've liked what I've heard from her, going back to The Sugarcubes. Her voice is amazing, which is what draws me to her. pick up 'post', it goes down easier. 'medulla' is by far her most difficult album.

    Best Album(s) of the Year

it's an acquired taste, but i quite like it. however, i only picked it by default cause none of the other stuff i bought this year was really good. it's not her masterpiece, & i really don't know if i'd recommend it to you since i don't know how big on bjork you are.

i think this guy has started more topics in the last 2 weeks than i have in my 2 years here. i'll go with bjork's 'medulla' by default.

    Important issue

dear american people, today was such a good day. i had breakfast at my favorite diner with merideth, and we had one of those awesome deep conversations. she actually opened up to me this morning. she vented to me about some major problems she's having, and she asked me for advice. she looked so hot in her pj harvey 'rod of me'-era t-shirt. i think she likes me. and then i ran into julie, who i haven't seen in forever, and we caught up but only for a little while cause she had to go. and then i ran into jim, who invited me to go get something to eat with him, but i had to turn him down cause i'd just eaten breakfast. i got back to my apartment, and i listened to the rolling stones and just lay in bed, thinking about stuff. i don't remember what exactly i was thinking about, but i remember it was deep. like about the world and what i wanted to do with my life (be YOUR PREZ~!!! LOL) and girls and stuff. i should've worked on my paper, but i was enjoying my free afternoon too much. there's always time for stuff like that later. and when i went to the tisch building to go in for class i saw meredith again, and she sat by me, but jessica was there too so i talked to jessica most of the time. we talked about papers and stuff, and she smiled a lot. i think she likes me. and in cultural theory class we saw this documentary about this vietnamese woman who was sent to america at 7, away from her mom, and was going to be reunited with her mom after 22 years and it was so sad i thought i was going to start crying in class, but thank god i didn't. then i went to magdalena's place after class, but i'll tell you about that later cause i'm really tired and i have to go to bed (but i'll give you a hint: i think she likes me). till tomorrow, Me

Hear ye, hear ye. In these times of great trouble, lend me not only your ears, but your hearts and minds. For weighty matters have fallen into my hands, and I need nothing less than your souls to join me on a crusade for truth, reconciliation, peace, prosperity, health, high spirits and high times to be had by my people who will behold and be held by only the highest values. Together, we can make the America you want. Culture, as we know it now, is the poison of the people. The masses now worship hip-hop stars and rockers--the filmy gliterati, not the intellectual literati. Society drags down our children to the levels of drones who will react at the slightest stimuli that catch their jaded eye. Invisible strings in these invisible cities, men constructed by electronical fields and vast amounts of power, pull the gaze of our children first to the right, then to the left, at the whims of the right-wing media and left-wing pop culture. These are broken wings, my little orphans. And how do I wish to take you under these wings and be your avant gardian angel? Let me count the ways: 1. We the person of the united global community will lead all splinter groups and lost souls into the culmination of new culture. Trust in me. Put all doubts aside, and fear no more. We will practice war no more, my friends, my Rhode Islanders, we will practice war no more. Thumb wars will be the extent of our combat. Chess games will be the culmination of our strategem. Rhyme slayings will be the height of our assassination. Rap battles our last battles. 2. Art, in its highest form, must unite to rock empires, move masses toward a more harmonious, peaceful, beautiful coexistence. For the gods want all of us. They do not need any of us, but we need them. Just as we need one another, every one another, every mother son, to really become who we are. Man cannot exist on his own. Community fuels progress. A musician cannot create when he must tend to the fields or hunt a hare. Art must enforce the humane in everyone by highlighting and drumming up inspiration from the darkest nadirs of the human soul manifested into realization. The proverbial road of a person's life must branch out to bridge gaps with the demon. It is as human to love as it is to demonize. The "other" was once the village over the hillock. Now it is the "axis of the evil empire," as our current government so likes to mercilessly demean it. They are not worthy of the power to even bestow mercy on others. For mercy is reserved for those who honor natural human codes of conduct and respect the history that should lead us to clearer, kinder, more humane treatment of the "others." Needless to say, the current president of our United States has never respected wisdom, because he has never possessed a mere iota of the brain cells required to practice even the lowest common denomination of common sense. His blatant abuses of international law and the Geneva convention are a mockery to the pride of our lost (but not quite forgotten) democracy. Yes, my friends, we do live in a fascist state. And consequently, I will state any example from the history of tyrants and fascism that will parallel the current state we find ourselves in with all mathematical exactitude and scientific precision. I will be your personal political scientist. I will help you with anything it is in my power to help you with. I will dismantle the piggish hoardes, the sties of fatcat government beaurocracies that suck the greedy straw that is your taxes to fill their not-so-little piggy banks. I will give the jobs back to independent, real people--not government-owned corporations and agencies that steal and lie, suburban Hummer-driving infidels to Mother Earth. I am here to serve. I promise to serve you, to show mercy on our henceforth proclaimed enemies, to make peace with those who loathe us and plot to celebrate our demise. I am your servant, and a humble one. The fact of the matter is, the rich world is eating sushi while the poor world is cleaning up. I promise to clean up the mess party poopers of politicos have left behind. It is an arduous task, but it must be done. I will act as our current government's janitor, sweeping away the defused bombshells and shrapnel splinters. I am of modest origins. I understand poverty as I understand power, and its enormous responsibilities. I will listen. I will act only if I believe I am representing the will of the great majority. I will act as one. For I know that no man is an island. I know that progress is optional, and I opt for it full-heartedly. I know that revolution is evolution, and if you elect me I will lead you through the greatest and most necessary revolution for justice, peace, the environment, art, clean technology, and most importantly...the people.

what should i see and review this weekend?

i think i'll let this poll run a little longer, mostly for the reason that i need to get a lot more work done on my term papers before i can even think about doing a review. 'notre musique' got 2 more votes than i thought it would.
  18. i haven't done a single review since i moved to nyc, and i desperately need to get back into the habit (especially since there's so much good stuff here that i want to see). so i'm looking to you, the message boarders who probably don't read the main page but come to the movies folder, for guidance. all of these are recent movies that i have at least a passing desire to see. i can't guarantee that i'll go see the poll winner, but it will help in my decision-making. if you're curious about the more obscure ones... notre musique bad education primer

after listening to it probably 4 times in 2 days, i recant my opinion of 'kid A'. it's not 'ok computer', but it's good stuff, and i now like it better than 'amnesiac'. seems way more assured than it did before, with lots of solid moments. "everything in its right place" is still an essentially perfect song. even though i don't think the title cut or "the national anthem" are particularly good songs, the 1-2-3 punch of mashing them together with "everything in its right place" makes it dynamic enough for me not to mind. "how to disappear completely" keeps the cool dynamics going, and stands on its own as a song quite well. and i kind of like "treefingers" now. "optimistic" seems a pretty weak song, and an especially weak choice for their most "song-oriented" production on the record, but the crunchy sound is cool and gives another cool dynamic shift. "in limbo" is just blah. "idioteque" and "morning bell" make a good 1-2 punch, and "morning bell" particularly is just fucking creepy. "motion picture soundtrack" is bitchin, except for the harp & the backup vocalists, which remind me too much of 'let it be'. i know it's supposed to be excessive and syrupy, but the harp in general as an instrument really bugs me. still a really good song, & a great closer.
